Chiggers are the larval stage of trombiculid mites, tiny arachnids belonging to the family Trombiculidae. These nearly microscopic parasites are found worldwide in temperate and tropical regions and are most active during late spring, summer, and early fall. While the adult and nymphal stages of trombiculid mites are free-living predators that feed on small insects and their eggs in soil and leaf litter, the six-legged larval stage is parasitic and requires a meal from a vertebrate host to develop into its next life stage.
Chigger larvae are extremely small, typically measuring only 0.2 to 0.4 millimeters in length, making them nearly invisible to the naked eye. They are usually orange to reddish in color, which is why they are sometimes called red bugs. Despite their tiny size, chigger larvae can cause significant discomfort and irritation to dogs and other animals they infest. Clusters of chiggers can sometimes be seen as small orange or red specks on the skin, particularly in areas where the skin is thin and hair is sparse.
Contrary to popular belief, chiggers do not burrow into the skin or feed on blood. Instead, they attach to the surface of the skin using specialized mouthparts and inject digestive enzymes that break down skin cells, creating a feeding tube called a stylostome. The chigger then feeds on the liquefied cellular material through this tube. It is the body's intense immune reaction to the stylostome and the injected salivary enzymes that produces the characteristic intense itching and inflammation associated with chigger bites.
Dogs typically encounter chiggers while walking through tall grass, brush, wooded areas, or overgrown fields where the larvae congregate in clusters on vegetation, waiting for a host to pass by. The larvae are most commonly found at ground level, clinging to the tips of grass blades and low-growing plants. When a dog brushes against infested vegetation, the larvae transfer onto the coat and migrate toward areas of thinner skin where they can more easily attach and feed.
