Fly strike dermatitis is a common warm-weather skin condition in dogs caused by the repeated biting and feeding activity of various fly species on exposed areas of the body. The condition results when blood-feeding flies target thin-skinned, sparsely haired regions of the dog, most notably the ear pinnae, the bridge of the nose, the periorbital region, and the ventral abdomen. Each bite inflicts a small wound, and the cumulative effect of dozens to hundreds of bites over the course of days and weeks produces painful, crusted, hemorrhagic lesions that can become secondarily infected.
The condition has been recognized for centuries in working and outdoor dogs and is sometimes referred to by the older term fly worry, reflecting the intense agitation and distress that affected dogs exhibit. While fly strike dermatitis is not typically life-threatening, the pain and irritation it causes can significantly compromise an affected dog's comfort and well-being. Left untreated, the cumulative tissue damage from ongoing fly attacks can lead to progressive erosion, ulceration, and scarring of the affected skin.
Fly strike dermatitis follows a predictable seasonal pattern that closely mirrors the activity periods of biting fly populations. In temperate climates, the condition emerges in late spring as temperatures rise and fly populations increase, peaks during the hot summer months, and gradually resolves in autumn as cooler weather reduces fly activity. In subtropical and tropical regions where fly populations remain active year-round, the condition may persist without seasonal remission, creating a chronic management challenge for pet owners and veterinarians.
The condition is distinct from myiasis, or maggot infestation, in which fly larvae actively invade and feed on living tissue. In fly strike dermatitis, the damage is caused by the adult flies' feeding behavior rather than larval invasion. However, severe cases of fly strike dermatitis can predispose to secondary myiasis if the open wounds created by biting flies attract egg-laying species such as blowflies or screwworm flies, making prompt treatment of fly bite lesions an important preventive measure.
