Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is an acute allergic skin reaction characterized by the sudden appearance of raised, flat-topped bumps called wheals on the skin surface. In dogs, these wheals typically appear as multiple rounded or irregularly shaped swellings that may be visible as bumps under the coat or as areas of raised hair. Urticaria results from the rapid release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from mast cells in the skin, triggered by exposure to an allergen or other provoking stimulus. This condition represents one of the most dramatic presentations of allergic skin disease in dogs, often appearing suddenly and causing significant concern for owners.
The underlying mechanism of urticaria involves immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions in the skin. When a sensitized dog encounters an allergen, IgE antibodies bound to mast cells in the skin recognize the allergen and trigger mast cell degranulation. This releases histamine and other vasoactive substances that cause blood vessels to dilate and become leaky, allowing fluid to accumulate in the skin and form the characteristic wheals. The reaction occurs rapidly, often within minutes to hours of allergen exposure, distinguishing urticaria from delayed-type allergic reactions. In some cases, urticaria occurs alongside angioedema, which involves deeper tissue swelling, particularly of the face, muzzle, and ears.
The clinical significance of urticaria extends beyond the immediate skin manifestations. While many cases are mild and self-limiting, urticaria can indicate systemic allergic reactions that may progress to more serious manifestations. Severe urticaria with angioedema affecting the face and throat raises concerns about potential airway compromise, though true anaphylaxis is uncommon in dogs compared to humans. The appearance of urticaria prompts investigation into potential triggers, as identifying and avoiding the causative allergen prevents future episodes. Recurrent urticaria significantly impacts quality of life and requires ongoing management to prevent repeated reactions.
Urticaria is highly treatable, with most episodes responding rapidly to appropriate therapy. Antihistamines and corticosteroids effectively suppress the allergic response and provide relief from symptoms. Identifying and avoiding the triggering allergen offers the best long-term control for dogs with identifiable triggers. Veterinary evaluation is important for dogs experiencing urticaria to ensure appropriate treatment, rule out more serious systemic reactions, and investigate potential underlying causes. With proper management, dogs that experience urticaria can have excellent outcomes and maintain normal quality of life.
