Blood carries oxygen and essential nutrients to all tissues in the body, and when blood volume drops significantly, organs begin to fail as they are deprived of these vital substances. The severity of hemorrhage is determined by the volume of blood lost, the rate of blood loss, and the dog's ability to compensate for the loss.
Hemorrhage can be classified based on its location and visibility. External hemorrhage is visible bleeding from wounds, lacerations, or other injuries to the body surface and is generally easier to identify and treat with direct pressure. Internal hemorrhage occurs within body cavities such as the abdomen, chest, or retroperitoneal space, and may result from trauma, ruptured tumors, organ disease, or clotting disorders. Internal bleeding is more insidious because it may not be immediately apparent, and significant blood loss can occur before symptoms become obvious. Both types of hemorrhage can be equally life-threatening and require urgent veterinary intervention.
The impact of hemorrhage on the body depends on the amount and rate of blood lost. Dogs can typically tolerate loss of up to fifteen percent of their blood volume with minimal clinical signs, though compensatory mechanisms are activated. Loss of fifteen to thirty percent of blood volume produces obvious signs of shock including rapid heart rate, weak pulses, and pale gums. Loss of more than thirty to forty percent of blood volume overwhelms the body's compensatory mechanisms and leads to decompensated shock, organ failure, and death if not treated. Young, healthy dogs may compensate longer than older dogs or those with concurrent illness, but all dogs have finite reserves.
Hemorrhage is treatable when identified quickly and when appropriate interventions are available. External bleeding can often be controlled with direct pressure, bandaging, and wound care, while internal bleeding typically requires surgical intervention to identify and control the bleeding source. Severely affected dogs may require blood transfusions to replace lost blood volume and restore oxygen-carrying capacity. The prognosis depends on the cause and location of bleeding, the volume of blood lost, how quickly treatment is initiated, and whether the bleeding can be definitively controlled.
