It is important to understand that griseofulvin is fungistatic rather than fungicidal, meaning it prevents fungal growth rather than directly killing the organisms, except in young, actively dividing cells. This distinction means that treatment must continue long enough for the infected tissue to be replaced by healthy, drug-containing tissue.
Griseofulvin is available in several oral formulations for administration to dogs, including tablets and oral liquid suspensions. The tablets come in two particle sizes: microsized and ultramicrosized, with the ultramicrosized particles having better bioavailability due to improved absorption. The medication is typically administered once daily, although the dose may be divided into twice-daily administration to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. A critical aspect of griseofulvin administration is that it should always be given with a fatty meal, as high-fat foods significantly enhance the gastrointestinal absorption of the medication. Foods such as cheese, butter, cream, or corn oil can be used to improve drug uptake.
