Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails in dogs, caused by various species of fungi that invade and colonize the nail plate, nail bed, or nail matrix. While considerably less common in dogs than in humans, this condition does occur and can cause significant changes to nail appearance and structure when present. The fungal organisms responsible break down keratin, the primary protein component of nails, leading to characteristic changes including thickening, discoloration, brittleness, and deformity of affected claws. Onychomycosis may affect a single nail, several nails, or in some cases all nails, depending on the extent of infection and the dog's immune status.
The fungi most commonly responsible for canine onychomycosis are dermatophytes, the same organisms that cause ringworm in dogs and other animals. Species including Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes can infect nails as part of a more widespread dermatophyte infection or occasionally as an isolated nail infection. Less commonly, other fungi including yeasts such as Candida species or environmental molds may infect dog nails, particularly in dogs with underlying immune suppression or those exposed to contaminated environments.
The impact of onychomycosis on affected dogs varies considerably depending on the severity and extent of infection. Mild cases may cause only cosmetic changes that do not significantly affect the dog's comfort or function. More severe infections can result in painful, malformed nails that make walking uncomfortable and may predispose to secondary bacterial infections. Perhaps equally important is the zoonotic potential of onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes, meaning the infection can potentially spread from affected dogs to humans and other pets in the household, making prompt diagnosis and treatment important from a public health perspective.
Diagnosis of onychomycosis requires identification of fungal organisms in nail samples, as the clinical appearance alone cannot definitively distinguish fungal infection from other causes of nail abnormalities. Treatment involves systemic antifungal medications typically administered for several months, as the medications must be present in the growing nail long enough for entirely new, healthy nail to grow out. With appropriate treatment, the prognosis for onychomycosis is generally good, though the slow rate of nail growth means that complete resolution takes considerable time and patience.
