These small, thread-like worms belonging primarily to the species Ancylostoma caninum in North America attach to the lining of the small intestine using their hook-shaped mouthparts and feed on the host's blood. Hookworm infection, known medically as ancylostomiasis, affects dogs worldwide but is especially prevalent in warm, humid climates where environmental conditions favor the survival and development of hookworm larvae. The parasites' blood-feeding behavior makes hookworm infection potentially more serious than many other intestinal parasites, as heavy infections can cause life-threatening anemia, particularly in young puppies.
The life cycle of hookworms involves both free-living environmental stages and parasitic stages within the host. Adult hookworms living in the small intestine produce eggs that pass out in the dog's feces. Under favorable environmental conditions of warmth and moisture, these eggs hatch into larvae that develop through several stages in the soil. Dogs become infected when they ingest infective larvae from contaminated soil or when larvae penetrate directly through the skin, typically through the footpads. Additionally, puppies can acquire hookworms before birth through transplacental transmission or shortly after birth through the mother's milk, making this one of the earliest parasitic infections many puppies experience.
The impact of hookworm infection on canine health stems primarily from the parasites' blood-feeding behavior. Each adult hookworm can consume a small but significant amount of blood daily, and the bite wounds continue to bleed even after the worm moves to a new attachment site due to anticoagulant substances in the worm's saliva. In heavy infections, the cumulative blood loss leads to iron-deficiency anemia, characterized by pale gums, weakness, and lethargy. The intestinal damage caused by hookworm attachment also leads to protein loss and digestive disturbances. Young puppies with heavy infections can become severely ill very quickly, and without prompt treatment, hookworm infection can be fatal in neonates.
Effective treatment for hookworm infection is readily available in the form of anthelmintic medications that eliminate the adult worms from the intestinal tract. Most commonly used dewormers are highly effective against hookworms when administered according to veterinary recommendations. However, treatment must be repeated because the medications only kill adult worms, not the immature larvae that may be migrating through body tissues or encysted in muscle. Prevention through regular deworming protocols and environmental management is crucial for controlling hookworm infection in dogs. Veterinary guidance is essential for determining appropriate treatment schedules, particularly for breeding females and young puppies who are most vulnerable to severe disease.
