Meibomian gland dysfunction is closely linked to blepharitis, as diseased meibomian glands contribute to lid margin inflammation while blepharitis can damage these important glands.

Conditions producing similar symptoms to blepharitis require differentiation for appropriate treatment. Periocular dermatitis affects the skin around the eyes without primary lid margin involvement, though the two conditions may coexist. Allergic conjunctivitis causes redness and discharge but may lack the lid margin changes characteristic of true blepharitis. Eyelid tumors, both benign and malignant, can mimic inflammatory conditions and must be ruled out, particularly in older dogs or when inflammation affects only one area. Facial nerve paralysis causes abnormal eyelid function and secondary irritation that may resemble primary blepharitis. Foreign bodies in the eye or under the eyelids cause acute irritation that might initially appear similar to sudden-onset blepharitis.

Complications of blepharitis can develop when the condition is severe or inadequately treated. Corneal ulceration represents a serious complication, occurring when damaged eyelids fail to protect the cornea or when chronic irritation causes direct corneal damage. Scarring of the eyelid margins may permanently alter lid structure and function, potentially requiring surgical correction. Chronic inflammation can lead to depigmentation of the eyelid margins, increasing vulnerability to sun damage. Secondary bacterial infections may become established and resistant to treatment in chronically inflamed tissues. Vision impairment may result from corneal scarring or other complications affecting the visual axis. Understanding these potential complications emphasizes the importance of prompt, thorough treatment of blepharitis to prevent progression to more serious outcomes.
