These glands, known as meibomian glands, are responsible for producing the lipid or oily component of the tear film, which is essential for preventing tear evaporation and maintaining ocular surface health. When these glands become obstructed, inflamed, or fail to produce adequate quality secretions, the resulting dysfunction leads to tear film instability and a cascade of ocular surface problems. The meibomian glands produce meibum, a specialized lipid secretion that forms the outermost layer of the tear film. This oily layer serves multiple critical functions, including slowing tear evaporation, providing lubrication during blinking, and creating a smooth optical surface for clear vision. In meibomian gland dysfunction, the quality or quantity of meibum production is compromised, leading to what is termed evaporative dry eye. Unlike aqueous tear deficiency, where the watery component of tears is insufficient, MGD affects the stability of the entire tear film by removing its protective lipid barrier.
The impact of meibomian gland dysfunction on a dog's ocular health and comfort can be substantial over time. Dogs with MGD often experience chronic irritation, redness, and discharge that may be mistaken for other eye conditions. The unstable tear film leads to increased exposure of the cornea, potentially causing epithelial damage, erosions, and secondary infections. The condition can contribute to or exacerbate concurrent problems such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca and chronic blepharitis.
