Aflatoxin poisoning, also known as aflatoxicosis, is a serious toxic condition in birds caused by ingestion of aflatoxins, which are poisonous compounds produced by certain species of Aspergillus mold, primarily Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These molds commonly grow on improperly stored grains, seeds, nuts, and other foodstuffs, making contaminated food the primary source of exposure for pet and aviary birds. Aflatoxins are among the most potent naturally occurring toxins known, capable of causing liver damage, immune suppression, and death even at low exposure levels. All bird species are susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning, though sensitivity varies among species.
The causes of aflatoxin poisoning in birds center on consumption of contaminated food items, particularly peanuts, corn, cottonseed, and various seeds commonly fed to pet birds. Aspergillus molds thrive in warm, humid conditions, making improperly stored food particularly dangerous. Seeds and nuts stored in damp conditions or for extended periods are at high risk for mold growth and aflatoxin contamination. Unfortunately, aflatoxins cannot be reliably detected by sight or smell, as they may be present in food that appears normal. Aflatoxin poisoning profoundly affects bird health, primarily targeting the liver where these toxins are metabolized. The liver damage caused by aflatoxins ranges from acute hepatic failure in severe cases to chronic liver disease with repeated low-level exposure. Beyond liver damage, aflatoxins suppress the immune system, leaving birds vulnerable to secondary infections. Reduced nutrient absorption and impaired clotting function further compromise the bird's health. Chronic exposure may also cause developmental problems in young birds and reduce reproductive success in breeding pairs. The impact on quality of life can be severe, with affected birds showing poor feathering, decreased activity, and general decline.
Treatment for aflatoxin poisoning focuses on supportive care and removal of the contaminated food source, as no specific antidote exists. The prognosis depends heavily on the level of exposure, duration, and how quickly intervention occurs. Acute high-dose exposure may cause rapid liver failure and death, while chronic low-level exposure may cause progressive liver disease that is more amenable to supportive care. Early recognition and elimination of contaminated food sources can prevent further exposure and allow recovery in some cases. Working closely with an avian veterinarian is essential for diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of birds affected by aflatoxin poisoning.
