Coagulopathy in birds refers to any disorder affecting the blood's ability to clot properly, resulting in abnormal bleeding that can range from mild bruising to life-threatening hemorrhage. The coagulation system is a complex cascade of proteins and cellular factors that work together to stop bleeding when blood vessels are damaged. When this system malfunctions, birds may bleed excessively from minor injuries, develop spontaneous bleeding without obvious trauma, or experience internal hemorrhage that can be fatal. All bird species are susceptible to coagulopathies, though the underlying causes and presentations may vary across species, ages, and individual health circumstances. Coagulopathy represents a medical emergency because uncontrolled bleeding can rapidly lead to life-threatening blood loss.
The causes of coagulopathy in birds are diverse and include conditions that affect different components of the clotting cascade. Liver disease is a common underlying cause because the liver produces most clotting factors; when liver function is compromised, clotting factor production decreases. Vitamin K deficiency, whether from dietary inadequacy or from toxin exposure that interferes with vitamin K metabolism, prevents production of functional clotting factors. Rodenticide toxicosis is a particularly important cause, as anticoagulant rodenticides are designed to cause fatal bleeding by blocking vitamin K function. Severe infections can trigger disseminated intravascular coagulation, a condition where the clotting system becomes both overactive and depleted simultaneously. Certain medications, bone marrow diseases, and inherited conditions can also cause coagulopathy.
The impact of coagulopathy on bird health depends on the severity of the clotting defect and the occurrence of bleeding events. Minor coagulopathies may cause only prolonged bleeding from cuts or bruising from minor trauma, which may not immediately threaten life but indicates an underlying problem requiring attention. Severe coagulopathies can result in spontaneous bleeding into body cavities, joints, or soft tissues, or catastrophic hemorrhage following minimal trauma. Internal bleeding may not be externally visible, making recognition challenging until the bird shows signs of severe blood loss including weakness, pale mucous membranes, and collapse. The brain, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract are particularly dangerous sites for bleeding.
Coagulopathy is treatable when the underlying cause can be identified and addressed, though emergency supportive care may be needed to stabilize the bird initially. Treatment approaches include providing the missing clotting factors or vitamin K, treating underlying liver disease or infection, and supporting the bird through blood loss with fluid therapy or transfusion. The prognosis depends heavily on the underlying cause, with some conditions such as vitamin K deficiency having excellent prognosis if treated promptly, while others such as end-stage liver disease carry poor prognosis. Early recognition of bleeding abnormalities and prompt veterinary evaluation offer the best chance for successful treatment before life-threatening hemorrhage occurs.
