Aspergillosis is a fungal infection caused by Aspergillus species, most commonly Aspergillus fumigatus, that poses a significant health threat to pet birds worldwide. This opportunistic infection primarily affects the respiratory system, with the air sacs and lungs being the most commonly involved structures, though the fungus can spread to virtually any organ in severe cases. Aspergillosis is considered one of the most important and challenging respiratory diseases in avian medicine, combining difficulty in early detection with the need for prolonged treatment courses. The disease can occur in any bird species but is particularly notorious for affecting African grey parrots, raptors, and penguins.
Aspergillus fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, with spores present in soil, decaying organic matter, moldy food and bedding, and normal household dust. Healthy birds regularly inhale these spores without developing disease, as their immune systems effectively eliminate the fungal elements before infection can establish. Aspergillosis develops when a bird's immune defenses are overwhelmed, either by massive spore exposure or by immunosuppression that allows even normal environmental spore loads to cause infection. Once established, the fungus grows within the respiratory tissues, forming characteristic plaques and granulomas that progressively compromise respiratory function.
The impact of aspergillosis on affected birds ranges from subtle decreases in stamina to severe, life-threatening respiratory failure. Because the disease often develops gradually, birds may show few obvious symptoms in early stages, and the condition may not be diagnosed until significant respiratory damage has occurred. Weight loss, exercise intolerance, changes in voice, and altered breathing patterns develop as the disease progresses. In disseminated cases where the fungus spreads beyond the respiratory system, neurological signs, visual problems, or other systemic manifestations may occur. The chronic nature of aspergillosis can significantly diminish quality of life and shorten lifespan if not adequately treated.
Treatment of aspergillosis is possible but challenging, typically requiring antifungal medication administered over months to achieve resolution. The fungus is difficult to eliminate from its protected niches within the respiratory system, and premature discontinuation of treatment often leads to relapse. Even with optimal treatment, some cases prove refractory, particularly when disease is advanced at diagnosis. Prevention through environmental management and maintenance of bird health offers the best approach to this serious condition. Working with an experienced avian veterinarian is essential for both treatment and prevention of aspergillosis.
