The liver normally converts ammonia, a toxic byproduct of protein metabolism, into urea for safe excretion. When this process fails due to liver dysfunction, ammonia and other neurotoxins accumulate in the bloodstream and affect brain function, producing the neurological symptoms characteristic of this syndrome.
The impact of hepatic encephalopathy on affected birds ranges from subtle behavioral changes to severe neurological impairment and death. Early stages may present as mild disorientation, changes in personality, or subtle coordination problems that owners might attribute to other causes. As the condition progresses, more obvious symptoms develop including pronounced disorientation, severe ataxia, seizures, and eventually coma. The severity typically correlates with the degree of liver dysfunction and the concentration of circulating neurotoxins. Quality of life deteriorates significantly as the condition advances without treatment.
Treatability of hepatic encephalopathy depends entirely on addressing the underlying liver disease and reducing circulating toxins.
