The impact of hepatomegaly on bird health depends entirely on the underlying cause and severity of liver enlargement. Mild hepatomegaly from early fatty liver disease may cause minimal symptoms and be highly treatable with dietary changes. Severe hepatomegaly can physically compress other organs, particularly the air sacs and gastrointestinal tract, causing respiratory difficulty and digestive problems even before liver function becomes significantly compromised. As the underlying disease progresses, liver function deteriorates, affecting metabolism, detoxification, and protein synthesis throughout the body. Birds with significant hepatomegaly often show decreased quality of life through lethargy, appetite changes, and general malaise. Hepatomegaly itself is not directly treated; rather, treatment targets the underlying cause of liver enlargement.
