Temperature management during transport is critical, particularly in extreme weather. In cold conditions, a hand warmer or heat pack wrapped in a towel and placed near but not in direct contact with the snake bag inside the secondary container provides sufficient warmth for trips lasting up to several hours. Direct contact between a heat pack and the snake bag must be avoided, as chemical hand warmers can reach temperatures high enough to cause burns through the thin fabric. In hot weather, the secondary container should be kept out of direct sunlight, and the vehicle's air conditioning should maintain a comfortable ambient temperature. A snake left in a parked car during warm weather, even for a few minutes, can overheat rapidly as the vehicle interior temperature climbs.

For longer journeys or overnight transport — such as when shipping a snake to a new owner or transporting it during a household move — a rigid, insulated container with ventilation is essential. Commercially produced reptile shipping boxes made of insulated styrofoam with pre-cut ventilation holes are the industry standard and are available from most reptile supply vendors. The snake, secured in its bag, is placed inside the box along with a crumpled paper towel or newspaper packing that prevents the bag from shifting during movement. A temperature-appropriate heat or cold pack, buffered from direct contact with the animal, maintains the interior climate within the acceptable range.

Pre-transport preparation matters as much as the transport method itself. The snake should not be fed within forty-eight hours prior to transport, as the stress of travel can trigger regurgitation of a partially digested meal, which is a dangerous medical event. Handling the snake briefly before bagging it helps assess its alertness and temperament, allowing the keeper to proceed with extra caution if the animal is unusually defensive.
