The water dish is among the most fundamental accessories in any Coachwhip enclosure, and selecting the right one for this species requires more thought than the task might initially suggest. Coachwhips are fast-moving, active snakes that traverse their enclosure frequently throughout the day, and a lightweight plastic water dish will be tipped, pushed, or dragged across the substrate within hours of placement. The resulting spill creates a moisture problem in an enclosure that must remain dry, saturates substrate that then needs immediate replacement, and leaves the snake without drinking water until the keeper discovers the problem.
Heavy ceramic crocks are the preferred water dish style for Coachwhips. A glazed ceramic dish with a wide, flat base and low center of gravity resists tipping even when the snake moves across or alongside it at speed. The dish should be large enough for the snake to submerge its head comfortably while drinking but does not need to be large enough for soaking — Coachwhips are not soaking species under normal conditions, and an oversized water feature introduces unnecessary humidity into the enclosure. A dish with a diameter roughly equivalent to one and a half times the width of the snake's body provides adequate drinking access without excess.
Water should be changed daily, and the dish itself should be scrubbed and disinfected at least once per week. Coachwhips frequently defecate in or near their water source, and bacterial biofilms develop rapidly on the interior surface of water dishes in the warm conditions of a reptile enclosure. A dilute bleach solution or reptile-safe disinfectant followed by thorough rinsing eliminates pathogenic bacteria and prevents the buildup of organic residue. Keeping a second, identical water dish on hand allows the keeper to swap in a clean dish immediately while the soiled one is being disinfected, ensuring the snake never goes without water during the cleaning process.
Water quality matters more than many keepers realize. Municipal tap water treated with chlorine or chloramine should be allowed to sit uncovered for twenty-four hours to off-gas, or it should be treated with a reptile-safe water conditioner before being placed in the enclosure. Some keepers prefer to use filtered or spring water to eliminate variability in municipal water treatment. Regardless of source, water should be offered at room temperature — cold water drawn directly from the tap can discourage drinking, and in a warm enclosure, a cold water dish creates condensation on the dish's exterior that contributes to localized humidity elevation around the dish.
