A thermostat is the single most important piece of technology in any boa constrictor enclosure. Every heat source, without exception, must be connected to a thermostat. Unregulated heat sources can reach dangerously high temperatures that cause severe thermal burns, and these injuries are among the most common and most preventable health emergencies in captive reptiles. A quality thermostat maintains the heat source at the target temperature and shuts it off automatically if the set point is exceeded.
There are three main types of thermostats used in reptile keeping: on-off, proportional, and pulse-proportional. On-off thermostats are the simplest, cutting power to the heat source when the target temperature is reached and restoring it when the temperature drops below the set point. This creates minor temperature fluctuations but is adequate for heat pads and ceramic heat emitters. Proportional thermostats deliver variable power to maintain a steady temperature with less fluctuation, making them better suited for radiant heat panels. Pulse-proportional thermostats rapidly cycle power in short bursts and are the most precise option available, though they are typically the most expensive.
The thermostat probe must be placed correctly to provide accurate readings. For under-tank heaters, the probe should sit between the heat pad and the enclosure floor, directly on the surface where the snake rests. For overhead heat sources, the probe should be positioned at the basking surface where the snake will actually be, not in open air where the reading will be lower than the actual surface temperature. An incorrectly placed probe defeats the purpose of the thermostat, as it will regulate to the wrong temperature.
Investing in a thermostat with a high-temperature cutoff alarm is an additional layer of protection. These units sound an audible alarm or send a notification if the temperature exceeds a preset maximum, alerting the keeper to a potential equipment malfunction or probe failure. For keepers who are away from home during the day, this feature provides peace of mind that a thermostat failure will not go undetected for hours while the enclosure overheats.
