Keepers with basic woodworking skills can construct enclosures of virtually any dimension, tailored precisely to the available space in their home and the number of animals being housed. Glass terrariums and plastic-walled enclosures, including repurposed aquariums and commercially available critter habitats with snap-on lids, are not appropriate housing for Southern Flying Squirrels. Cleaning & Maintenance

Southern Flying Squirrels are creatures of habit that rely heavily on scent cues for orientation, territory marking, and security within their environment. Over-cleaning or using strongly scented disinfectants strips away these familiar scent markers and can cause significant behavioral stress, manifesting as reduced appetite, increased hiding, agitation, or even self-directed overgrooming. The goal is a cleaning regimen that balances hygiene with environmental stability.

Daily maintenance should include removing any uneaten fresh food, spot-cleaning soiled substrate around latrine areas, wiping food and water dishes, and visually inspecting the cage for any damage, loose fittings, or hazards. Most Southern Flying Squirrels establish preferred latrine sites within the enclosure, which makes daily spot-cleaning efficient and minimally disruptive. Water bottles should be rinsed and refilled daily with fresh water, and the sipper tube should be checked for blockages each time. Gravity-fed water bottles with stainless steel sipper tubes are preferred over water bowls because bowls are quickly contaminated with bedding, droppings, and food debris by an active arboreal animal.

Full substrate changes should be performed weekly under normal conditions, or more frequently if odor or visible soiling indicates the bedding's absorptive capacity has been exceeded.
