Southern Flying Squirrels (Glaucomys volans) are opportunistic omnivores whose wild diet reflects the seasonal availability of food across deciduous and mixed forests of eastern North America. They consume a remarkably varied assortment of nuts, seeds, fungi, tree bark cambium, lichens, insects, bird eggs, and even carrion when the opportunity arises. This dietary breadth means that captive feeding programs must address multiple nutritional axes simultaneously rather than relying on a single commercial product to meet all requirements. An overly simplified diet is the most common husbandry error made by new flying squirrel keepers and is directly linked to the majority of metabolic health problems seen in captive populations.
Protein requirements for Southern Flying Squirrels are moderate compared to strictly insectivorous species but substantially higher than those of herbivorous rodents such as guinea pigs or chinchillas. A target of roughly fifteen to twenty percent protein by dry weight is appropriate for adult maintenance, with higher levels needed during growth, pregnancy, and lactation. Animal-based protein sources including insects, cooked egg, and occasional lean meat are nutritionally superior to plant-based proteins for this species because they provide complete amino acid profiles and are more efficiently metabolized by the flying squirrel's digestive system.
Fat intake is a nuanced consideration for captive Southern Flying Squirrels. In the wild, these animals build fat reserves in autumn by consuming large quantities of acorns, hickory nuts, and other high-fat mast crops, then gradually deplete those reserves through the winter months when foraging is more difficult and energy expenditure for thermoregulation increases. Captive animals living in climate-controlled environments with constant food access do not experience this natural cycle of fat accumulation and depletion, which makes chronic obesity a genuine risk if high-fat foods are offered without restraint year-round. Fat content in the total diet should be managed to remain around five to eight percent for non-breeding adults.
Calcium metabolism deserves particular attention because Southern Flying Squirrels are highly susceptible to metabolic bone disease in captivity. Wild flying squirrels obtain calcium from a variety of natural sources including bones, antlers, snail shells, and calcium-rich fungi. Captive diets that lean heavily on nuts and seeds, which are almost universally high in phosphorus and low in calcium, create a dangerous mineral imbalance over time. Without deliberate calcium supplementation and careful attention to the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio across all dietary components, skeletal demineralization can progress silently until the animal presents with limb fractures, jaw softening, or hind-limb paralysis.
