Wild Pacas spend their active hours navigating complex forest environments, foraging through leaf litter and fallen fruit, investigating novel scents and textures, digging burrow systems, and maintaining vigilance against predators. This behavioral repertoire requires continuous cognitive engagement that a bare enclosure with a food dish simply cannot provide. Without appropriate enrichment, captive Pacas develop stereotypic behaviors such as repetitive pacing, bar chewing, excessive grooming, and lethargy, all of which indicate chronic psychological distress.

The enrichment needs of Pacas are shaped by their natural history as large, nocturnal, ground-dwelling rodents with strong burrowing and foraging instincts. Unlike arboreal species that benefit primarily from climbing structures, or social species that thrive on conspecific interaction, Pacas derive the greatest enrichment value from activities that engage their sense of smell, their powerful incisors, their digging instincts, and their investigative curiosity about novel objects and substrates. An effective enrichment program should target all of these behavioral domains rather than focusing narrowly on a single activity type.

Rotation is a critical principle in any enrichment program for an intelligent animal. A toy or puzzle that captivates a Paca on its first presentation will lose its enrichment value as the animal learns its characteristics and exhausts its novelty. Maintaining a library of enrichment items and rotating three to five into the enclosure at any given time, swapping individual items every few days, keeps the environment stimulating without requiring continuous investment in new products. Items that have been out of the enclosure for two to three weeks regain much of their novelty value when reintroduced, particularly if they have been stored in contact with different substrates or scents that give them a fresh olfactory profile.

Safety evaluation is paramount before introducing any enrichment item into a Paca enclosure. This species has exceptionally powerful jaws capable of destroying materials that would be considered safe and durable for smaller rodents. In the wild, a Paca may travel considerable distances each night visiting fruiting trees, digging for tubers, and investigating potential food sources, spending the majority of its active period engaged in food acquisition behavior. A captive Paca that receives its entire daily ration in a dish consumes its meal in minutes and is left with hours of unoccupied time that would otherwise be filled by foraging activity.

Scatter feeding is the simplest and most effective foraging enrichment technique, requiring no specialized equipment. Instead of placing the daily pellet ration and fresh food in a dish, spread it across the enclosure floor, bury small portions under substrate, tuck pieces behind structures, and place food items in locations that require the Paca to move through its entire territory to collect its meal. This approach extends feeding time from minutes to an hour or more and encourages the Paca to use its highly developed sense of smell to locate food items that are not immediately visible. Hay can be scattered and loosely mounded rather than placed in a rack, allowing the Paca to sort through it and extract preferred stems.

Purpose-built puzzle feeders designed for dogs, parrots, or primates can be adapted for Paca use with careful selection. The feeder must be large and heavy enough that the Paca cannot simply flip it over to dump out the contents, and all components must be made from materials that can withstand sustained gnawing without producing dangerous fragments. DIY foraging devices constructed from natural materials offer both enrichment value and disposability, eliminating concerns about long-term durability. A cardboard tube stuffed with hay and food items, a paper bag filled with shredded paper and treats, or a hollowed gourd packed with fruit and sealed with a plug of leaves all present the Paca with a destructible puzzle that it can shred, gnaw, and dismantle to access the food inside. These items are consumed or destroyed in a single session and can be replaced with slight variations at each offering, maintaining novelty without requiring the keeper to stock an extensive inventory of commercial products.

Chew Toys and Dental Enrichment

Gnawing is an essential behavior for all rodent species, driven by the biological necessity of wearing down continuously growing incisors to prevent malocclusion and overgrowth. For Pacas, whose incisors are proportionally large and extremely powerful, the need for appropriate gnawing substrates is amplified by the sheer rate of dental growth and the force the animal can exert on materials. An enclosure that lacks adequate chewing opportunities will eventually produce a Paca with overgrown teeth, a painful and potentially fatal condition that requires veterinary intervention to correct and ongoing management to prevent recurrence.

Hardwood branches and logs are the most natural and effective chew items for Pacas, providing both dental wear and behavioral enrichment as the animal strips bark, gnaws sapwood, and reduces solid wood to chips. Safe hardwood species include apple, pear, willow, maple, birch, and hazelnut, all of which are nontoxic when ingested and have a density that provides satisfying resistance without being so hard that they risk tooth fracture. Branches should be sourced from trees that have not been treated with pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, and ideally should be cut from trees growing well away from roadsides where lead and other pollutants accumulate on bark surfaces. Freshly cut green branches are often more appealing than dried ones, as the moisture content and intact bark offer additional textural interest.

Commercial chew products designed for rabbits and large rodents can supplement natural wood offerings but should be evaluated individually for suitability. Apple wood sticks, willow wreaths and balls, and compressed hay logs are generally safe and moderately engaging, though many Pacas show more sustained interest in raw branches with bark intact than in processed chew products. Avoid any chew toy that incorporates dyes, flavored coatings, or glued components, as these additives serve no functional purpose and introduce unnecessary chemical exposure. Mineral chews and pumice stones marketed for dental wear are too soft to provide meaningful resistance for Paca incisors and are better categorized as mineral supplements than dental enrichment.

The placement and presentation of chew items within the enclosure influences how much use they receive. A branch laid flat on the substrate may be ignored by a Paca that would enthusiastically gnaw the same branch if it were wedged upright between two structures or suspended at an angle that requires the animal to adopt different body positions to access it. Varying the orientation, height, and location of chew items each time they are refreshed adds an element of novelty and encourages the Paca to interact with the items rather than habituating to their presence as static background fixtures. Replacing chew items before they are completely consumed, rather than waiting until they are fully destroyed, also helps maintain engagement, as partially worn items lose their textural complexity and become less interesting.

Digging and Burrowing Enrichment

Burrowing is arguably the most defining natural behavior of the Paca, and facilitating this instinct in captivity produces some of the most visible and sustained enrichment engagement of any activity category. Wild Pacas excavate and maintain complex burrow systems with multiple entrance and exit points, spending significant portions of their active time modifying, extending, and maintaining these underground networks. The act of digging itself appears to be intrinsically rewarding for the species, separate from the functional utility of the resulting burrow, which explains why captive Pacas provided with adequate den structures still exhibit strong motivation to dig when given the opportunity.

The most straightforward approach to digging enrichment is providing a designated digging area within the enclosure that contains a deep fill of loose, diggable substrate. A large, heavy-duty plastic tub or a partitioned section of the enclosure filled with eight to twelve inches of clean topsoil, coconut coir, or a soil and sand mixture gives the Paca a dedicated zone where it can excavate freely without undermining enclosure walls or foundations. The substrate should be lightly moistened to hold its shape when the Paca digs tunnels and chambers, as dry substrate that collapses immediately is less satisfying and provides less behavioral engagement than material that retains the structure of the Paca's excavation work.

Burying enrichment items within the digging substrate combines foraging and burrowing behaviors into a single activity that can occupy a Paca for extended periods. Root vegetables, whole nuts in shell, hay bundles, and sealed paper packets containing food items can be placed at various depths within the dig box, creating a three-dimensional foraging challenge that rewards sustained digging effort with food discoveries. Varying the depth and distribution of buried items at each replenishment prevents the Paca from learning a fixed pattern and encourages thorough exploration of the entire substrate volume.

For keepers with outdoor enclosures or large indoor pens with suitable foundations, providing an area where the Paca can dig directly into packed earth or a deep soil bed offers the richest possible burrowing experience. The Paca will create its own tunnel system over time, and observing this natural engineering behavior is one of the most rewarding aspects of keeping this species. The digging zone must be bounded by buried barriers, such as concrete blocks, heavy-gauge hardware cloth extending at least two feet deep, or sheet metal driven into the ground, to prevent tunnels from extending beyond the enclosure perimeter. Inspecting the perimeter for signs of undermining should be part of the daily enclosure check whenever earthen digging areas are provided.

Sensory and Novel Object Enrichment

Pacas possess a highly developed olfactory system that plays a central role in navigation, food detection, predator awareness, and social communication. Scent-based enrichment exploits this sensory strength by introducing novel odors into the enclosure environment, stimulating investigative behavior and cognitive engagement without requiring physical interaction with a specific object. Herbs such as basil, mint, oregano, and rosemary can be rubbed on enclosure surfaces, placed in fabric sachets hung at nose height, or scattered fresh throughout the substrate to create an olfactory landscape that changes with each application.

Novel object introduction is a simple but effective enrichment strategy that capitalizes on the Paca's cautious but curious response to unfamiliar items in its territory. Objects need not be commercially produced animal toys; a smooth river stone, a section of untreated ceramic drain pipe, a woven grass mat, or a small stack of straw bales arranged in a new configuration all qualify as novel environmental additions that prompt investigative behavior. The key principle is that the item should be unfamiliar enough to elicit approach, investigation, and interaction, while being safe enough that unsupervised contact poses no risk. Items should be rotated frequently, as the enrichment value diminishes rapidly once the Paca has fully explored and categorized a new object.

Auditory enrichment receives less attention in rodent husbandry literature than visual or olfactory stimulation, but Pacas are highly sound-aware animals that respond to a range of environmental noises. Low-volume nature recordings featuring forest soundscapes, rainfall, flowing water, and bird calls can be played during the Paca's active evening hours to create an auditory environment richer than the silence or mechanical background noise of a typical indoor enclosure. The volume must be kept low enough that the Paca can choose to approach or move away from the sound source, and harsh or sudden noises must be avoided entirely, as they can trigger panic responses in an animal that relies on auditory cues to detect predators.

Water-based enrichment deserves special consideration for Pacas, which are semi-aquatic in the wild and voluntarily enter streams, ponds, and puddles during their nocturnal activity periods. A shallow, heavy-duty water pan large enough for the Paca to wade into, or a small splash pool during supervised outdoor time, provides sensory enrichment that no dry-environment enrichment item can replicate. The water should be shallow enough that the Paca can stand comfortably with its head well above the surface, generally no more than four to six inches deep for an adult, and must be changed after each use to prevent bacterial contamination. Some Pacas will carry food items to water and wash them before eating, a behavior also observed in wild populations that provides an additional layer of foraging enrichment when water access is combined with feeding opportunities.

Enrichment Safety and Rotation

Every enrichment item introduced into a Paca enclosure must pass a systematic safety assessment before unsupervised access is granted, because the consequences of an enrichment-related injury or obstruction in an animal of this size can be severe and expensive to treat. The assessment should consider the item's material composition, its behavior under sustained gnawing pressure, whether it contains any small parts that could be detached and swallowed, whether it has sharp edges or protruding hardware, and whether it could trap or entangle the animal if it steps on, into, or through the item during nocturnal activity when the keeper is not observing.

Plastic items require particularly careful evaluation because the range of plastic types used in commercial pet products and household items varies enormously in terms of toxicity, fracture characteristics, and resistance to gnawing. Hard, brittle plastics that shatter into sharp shards when chewed are dangerous and must be excluded. Softer plastics that tear into long strips pose an ingestion and intestinal obstruction risk. Heavy-duty polyethylene, high-density polypropylene, and thick-walled PVC are generally the safest plastic types for Paca enrichment use, as they resist fracture and tend to be gnawed into small granules rather than sharp fragments. Even these materials should be inspected daily for signs of progressive damage that could produce hazardous debris.

Fabric and rope items that are popular enrichment choices for many companion animal species are generally inappropriate for Pacas. Woven cotton ropes, fleece blankets, and fabric hammocks or tunnels will be shredded and partially ingested by a Paca within hours of introduction, and the resulting fiber masses pose a significant gastrointestinal impaction risk. The only textile materials that should be considered are heavy-duty burlap or jute items that the Paca can shred into short natural fibers that pass through the digestive tract without clumping, and even these should be offered only under observation until the keeper is confident that the individual animal is not consuming large quantities of the material.

A well-designed rotation schedule prevents enrichment fatigue while ensuring that the enclosure always contains a balanced mix of enrichment types. A simple framework divides enrichment into categories, such as foraging, chewing, digging, sensory, and novel objects, and ensures that at least one item from each category is present in the enclosure at all times. Individual items within each category are swapped every three to five days, with the removed items cleaned, inspected for damage, and stored for future reintroduction. Keeping a written log of which items are in the enclosure and when they were last rotated helps prevent inadvertent repetition and reveals patterns in the Paca's preferences that can inform future enrichment selection.
