Enclosure Size Requirements

Pacas are among the largest rodents commonly maintained in private collections, with adults routinely reaching twenty or more pounds and measuring over two feet in body length. Housing an animal of this size and activity level demands enclosure dimensions that far exceed what is appropriate for smaller rodent species, and underestimating space requirements is one of the most common and consequential mistakes made by first-time Paca keepers. An enclosure that seems adequate when the animal is a juvenile will quickly become confining as the Paca reaches adult size, leading to stress behaviors, obesity from insufficient movement, and destructive attempts to escape or modify the enclosure walls.

The minimum recommended floor space for a single adult Paca is approximately eight feet by four feet, providing thirty-two square feet of usable ground area. This minimum should be considered a baseline for animals that also receive daily supervised time outside the enclosure for exercise and exploration. Pacas that spend the majority of their time confined to their primary enclosure require substantially more space, ideally a dedicated room or a large custom-built pen measuring at least ten by six feet. Vertical height is less critical than floor space for this ground-dwelling species, but enclosure walls must be a minimum of three feet tall and should be four feet or higher if the enclosure lacks a secure top, as Pacas can jump with surprising power when startled.

Paired or group housing multiplies space requirements significantly. While Pacas are generally solitary in the wild outside of breeding pairs, captive animals that have been socialized together from a young age can sometimes cohabitate peacefully in sufficiently large spaces. Each additional animal requires roughly fifty percent more floor space than the single-animal minimum, and the enclosure must provide multiple den sites, feeding stations, and visual barriers so that animals can retreat from one another when social tension arises. Attempting to house multiple Pacas in a space adequate for only one will reliably produce aggression, stress-related illness, and injuries.

The structural integrity of the enclosure itself must account for the Paca's considerable strength and persistent gnawing behavior. Standard small-animal cages, even large ones marketed for rabbits or ferrets, are entirely inadequate. Wire gauge must be heavy enough to resist sustained chewing, and any wooden framing elements must be protected with metal flashing or replaced entirely with steel or aluminum channel. Custom-built enclosures using welded steel frames with heavy-gauge galvanized wire panels represent the most durable indoor option, while outdoor enclosures typically require concrete or buried wire foundations to prevent the Paca from burrowing out within days.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Setups

The decision between indoor and outdoor housing depends on climate, available space, local regulations, and the keeper's long-term management goals for the animal. Each approach carries distinct advantages and challenges, and many experienced Paca keepers ultimately employ a hybrid model that provides indoor housing for climate control and security alongside a connected or separately accessed outdoor enclosure for daytime enrichment and natural light exposure.

Indoor housing offers superior environmental control, which is particularly important in temperate climates where seasonal temperature swings can fall well outside the Paca's comfort range. A dedicated room with sealed flooring, such as a laundry room, sunroom, or converted garage, can be adapted into an excellent Paca habitat. The room should be thoroughly animal-proofed by covering or removing all electrical wiring within reach, sealing gaps behind appliances and cabinetry, securing any toxic substances in locked cabinets, and replacing drywall baseboards with metal or tile alternatives that can withstand gnawing. Flooring should be nonporous and easy to sanitize, with ceramic tile, sealed concrete, or commercial-grade vinyl being the most practical options.

Outdoor enclosures allow Pacas to experience natural light cycles, fresh air, ambient sounds, and a richer sensory environment than any indoor space can provide. However, outdoor housing introduces significant security and safety considerations. The enclosure must be fully predator-proof, which means not only strong walls and a secure roof but also a foundation that extends at least eighteen inches below ground level to prevent predators from digging in and the Paca from digging out. Hardware cloth with a minimum gauge of fourteen should be used for all mesh panels, as lighter materials can be breached by raccoons, dogs, or the Paca itself.

Weather protection is mandatory for any outdoor setup. A solid-roofed shelter area within the enclosure must provide complete protection from rain, direct sun, and wind, and this sheltered zone should be large enough for the Paca to move around comfortably rather than simply huddle in a minimal space. In regions with cold winters, an outdoor enclosure must either include a heated shelter section or connect directly to an indoor space where the animal can retreat when temperatures drop below sixty degrees Fahrenheit. Pacas are tropical animals with virtually no cold tolerance, and prolonged exposure to temperatures below fifty degrees can cause hypothermia and respiratory illness even in otherwise healthy adults.

Substrate and Bedding

Substrate selection for a Paca enclosure must balance absorbency, comfort, safety, and ease of cleaning against the reality that this is a large animal that produces substantially more waste and exerts more mechanical pressure on bedding materials than a hamster or guinea pig. The substrate also serves an enrichment function, as Pacas are instinctive burrowers and diggers that derive significant psychological benefit from being able to manipulate and move their bedding material. A substrate that is merely functional without supporting natural digging behaviors misses an important dimension of Paca husbandry.

Kiln-dried pine shavings are a widely used and generally appropriate substrate for indoor Paca enclosures. The kiln-drying process removes the volatile phenolic compounds that make untreated softwood shavings a respiratory hazard, and the resulting product is absorbent, reasonably dust-free, and affordable in the bulk quantities needed for a large enclosure. Shavings should be spread to a depth of three to four inches throughout the enclosure, with deeper drifts of six inches or more in the designated digging and denning areas where the Paca is likely to excavate hollows for sleeping. Cedar shavings must never be used under any circumstances, as the aromatic compounds they release are directly toxic to rodent respiratory systems and liver tissue regardless of the drying method used.

Paper-based bedding products offer superior dust control and are the preferred option for Pacas with respiratory sensitivity or for enclosures in rooms where human occupants have allergies. Recycled paper bedding expands significantly when fluffed, provides excellent absorbency, and composts readily after use. The primary drawback is cost, as the volume required for a Paca-sized enclosure makes paper bedding considerably more expensive per substrate change than wood shavings. Some keepers use a layered approach, placing a base of paper bedding in the primary living area for absorbency and using shavings in the digging zone where the lower cost per volume makes deep fills more economical.

For outdoor enclosures or large indoor pens with solid floors, a naturalistic substrate approach using a base of packed earth or sand covered with leaf litter, straw, or grass hay can provide an enriching and functional surface. This approach most closely approximates the forest floor environment that wild Pacas inhabit and supports the most natural range of digging and burrowing behaviors. The trade-off is that naturalistic substrates are more difficult to sanitize than disposable bedding products, requiring periodic replacement of the top layers and occasional complete substrate changes when odor or parasite levels become unacceptable. Sand used in substrate mixes should be washed play sand, not construction sand or beach sand, which may contain salts, silica dust, or contaminants.

Temperature and Humidity

Pacas are native to lowland tropical forests where temperatures remain relatively stable year-round, typically ranging from seventy-five to eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit with high ambient humidity. Captive Pacas thrive within a temperature range of seventy to eighty-two degrees Fahrenheit and begin showing signs of thermal stress outside this window. Understanding and managing the thermal environment of the enclosure is not optional husbandry refinement but a fundamental requirement for maintaining a healthy animal, particularly in temperate climates where indoor temperatures may fluctuate with the seasons.

Cold stress is the more dangerous extreme for this tropical species. When ambient temperatures drop below sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit, Pacas become lethargic, reduce food intake, and may develop respiratory infections as immune function is compromised by the metabolic demands of thermoregulation. Prolonged cold exposure below fifty-five degrees can be fatal. Supplemental heating for indoor enclosures in cooler climates should be provided through room-level climate control rather than localized heat sources whenever possible, as space heaters and heat lamps create hot spots and fire risks in enclosures containing combustible bedding material. Ceramic panel heaters mounted on walls above the enclosure can provide safe radiant heat without the risks associated with infrared bulbs or under-tank heating pads designed for reptiles.

Humidity management receives less attention than temperature in most Paca care guides but plays an equally important role in respiratory and integumentary health. Wild Pacas inhabit environments where relative humidity routinely exceeds seventy percent, and captive animals housed in dry indoor environments are prone to dry skin, flaky coat, and irritation of the nasal passages and eyes. Maintaining humidity in the fifty to seventy percent range is ideal. Portable humidifiers, shallow water features within the enclosure, and regular misting of substrate can all contribute to appropriate moisture levels, but keepers must monitor for condensation on enclosure walls and ceiling, which indicates excessive humidity that can promote mold growth and bacterial proliferation in the substrate.

Seasonal transitions require particular attention in climates with distinct winters and summers. A Paca enclosure that maintains ideal conditions in spring and autumn may become too cold in winter when heating systems cycle and too warm in summer when ambient temperatures climb. Automated climate control with thermostatic regulation is the most reliable solution, but even simple measures like sealing drafts around the enclosure during winter and ensuring adequate ventilation during summer can prevent the worst temperature excursions. Placing a reliable digital thermometer and hygrometer inside the enclosure at the Paca's level rather than on a nearby wall gives the most accurate picture of the conditions the animal actually experiences.

Den and Hide Construction

Providing appropriate den structures is one of the most important aspects of Paca enclosure design, directly influencing the animal's stress levels, sleep quality, sense of security, and willingness to interact with handlers. Wild Pacas are obligate burrow users that spend their entire daylight resting period inside underground tunnels or beneath dense vegetation, and captive animals that lack access to an enclosed, dark, secure resting space exhibit chronic stress behaviors including hypervigilance, aggression during handling, reduced appetite, and abnormal repetitive movements. No Paca enclosure should be considered complete without at least one well-designed den.

The den structure must be large enough for the Paca to enter, turn around, and lie fully stretched out without any part of its body protruding from the entrance. For an average adult Paca, this translates to an interior chamber measuring approximately eighteen inches long, twelve inches wide, and ten inches tall, with an entrance tunnel or opening of roughly six to eight inches in diameter. The interior should be dark even when the enclosure lights are on, which means the den should be fully enclosed with opaque walls, a solid roof, and an entrance that does not allow direct light to reach the sleeping chamber. Some keepers add an angled entrance tunnel of twelve to eighteen inches in length, which replicates the curved approach of a natural burrow and further reduces light penetration and drafts.

Material selection for den construction must prioritize durability above all else, as Pacas will gnaw on any structure within their enclosure and are capable of reducing untreated wooden hides to splinters within weeks. Dense hardwoods like oak, maple, or birch resist chewing better than softwoods but will still be damaged over time. The most durable approach combines a heavy-gauge metal or thick plastic shell with removable hardwood interior panels that can be replaced as they wear. Large-diameter PVC pipe, heavy-duty plastic storage containers with cut entrances, and converted dog crates with opaque covers all serve as functional den bases that resist destruction while remaining easy to clean.

Multiple den options should be provided whenever space allows, even for a single Paca. Offering two or three den structures of different designs, in different locations within the enclosure, and with different microclimatic characteristics gives the animal choice and control over its resting environment, both of which reduce stress. Some Pacas prefer a warm den near a heat source during cooler periods and a cooler, more ventilated den during warmer weather, and having both options available eliminates the need for the keeper to guess which the animal prefers at any given time. Den interiors should be lined with soft hay or shredded paper bedding, which the Paca will rearrange to its liking, and this lining should be refreshed at least twice weekly to maintain hygiene.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Maintaining a hygienic enclosure is substantially more labor-intensive for a Paca than for smaller rodents, both because of the volume of waste produced and because the enclosure's larger footprint means more surface area to service at each cleaning interval. Establishing and adhering to a consistent cleaning schedule is essential for preventing ammonia buildup, bacterial proliferation, and parasite establishment, all of which pose direct threats to the Paca's respiratory and gastrointestinal health. Irregular cleaning that allows waste to accumulate also degrades the Paca's willingness to use designated latrine areas, eventually leading to a uniformly soiled enclosure that is far harder to manage.

Daily maintenance should include removing visible fecal matter and soiled substrate from the primary living area and latrine zones, refreshing water sources, and removing any uneaten fresh food from the previous day's feeding. Pacas frequently establish preferred latrine corners or edges within their enclosure, and keepers can take advantage of this tendency by placing extra substrate or a removable litter tray in these areas, making daily spot-cleaning faster and more efficient. Food dishes and water bottles or bowls should be rinsed and refilled daily, with a more thorough sanitizing scrub performed at least every other day.

Weekly cleaning involves a more comprehensive substrate change in which the top two to three inches of bedding throughout the enclosure are removed and replaced with fresh material. The den interior should be cleaned out and refilled with fresh nesting material at this interval as well. Hard surfaces including the enclosure floor, walls at ground level, shelves, and platforms should be wiped down with a pet-safe enzymatic cleaner that breaks down urine compounds and eliminates odor without leaving chemical residues that could irritate the Paca's respiratory system or skin. Bleach-based cleaners are effective sanitizers but must be rinsed thoroughly and allowed to off-gas completely before the animal is returned to the enclosure.

A full deep clean should be performed monthly, during which all substrate is removed, all enclosure surfaces are scrubbed and sanitized, all accessories and furniture are washed or replaced, and the enclosure structure itself is inspected for damage, wear, or developing weak points where the Paca has been chewing. This is also the appropriate time to inspect and tighten any hardware, check gate latches and door hinges for looseness, and examine the substrate barrier or foundation of outdoor enclosures for signs of digging near the perimeter. Deep cleaning is considerably easier when the enclosure has been designed from the outset with smooth, nonporous surfaces and removable components, so considering long-term maintenance access during the initial enclosure construction phase saves enormous effort over the life of the setup.
