The water delivery system must accommodate this high-volume consumption while remaining resistant to contamination, spillage, and the animal's inevitable attempts to gnaw, tip, or dismantle whatever container is provided.

Heavy ceramic crocks are the most practical open-water option for Pacas, offering stability that resists tipping and a material that the animal cannot gnaw through. A crock with a weighted base or one that fits into a wall-mounted bracket provides the most reliable access, as even heavy dishes can be flipped by a determined twenty-pound rodent. The crock should have a capacity of at least thirty-two ounces to ensure that the water supply does not run dry during the Paca's active nighttime hours when the keeper is unlikely to be available for refills. The primary disadvantage of open water vessels is contamination, as substrate particles, food debris, and fecal matter inevitably find their way into the dish, requiring at minimum twice-daily water changes and thorough scrubbing of the crock at each change.

Hay management in a Paca enclosure presents a unique challenge because the volume of hay consumed by an animal of this size is substantial, and hay that is allowed to accumulate on the enclosure floor quickly becomes soiled with urine and feces, rendering it inedible and creating a sanitation burden. Wall-mounted hay racks constructed from heavy-gauge wire or steel bar stock keep the hay supply elevated, clean, and accessible while preventing the Paca from nesting in or urinating on its food hay. Inspect each hay delivery or purchase for signs of mold, dust, or discoloration before placing it into the storage supply, and discard any bales or bags that smell sour, musty, or chemical rather than clean and grassy.

Grooming Tools

Pacas are generally fastidious self-groomers that maintain their coarse, bristly coat in good condition without extensive human intervention, but regular grooming sessions serve purposes beyond coat maintenance. Gentle grooming builds trust and habituates the Paca to being handled and touched over its entire body, which makes veterinary examinations, health checks, and medical treatments far less stressful for both the animal and the handler. Establishing a grooming routine while the Paca is young and still in the socialization-receptive period creates a positive association with human touch that persists throughout the animal's life.

A soft-bristle brush designed for short-haired dogs or cats is the most appropriate primary grooming tool for a Paca's coat. The bristles should be firm enough to move through the coarse guard hairs and remove loose fur and skin flakes but not so stiff that they scratch or irritate the skin beneath. Slicker brushes with fine wire bristles are too aggressive for routine Paca grooming and can cause micro-abrasions on the relatively thin skin that rodents have beneath their fur. Rubber grooming mitts that fit over the hand offer an alternative that many Pacas tolerate better than a brush, as the hand contact is more familiar and the flexible rubber nubs provide a massaging sensation that some animals appear to enjoy.

Nail trimming is the most critical grooming task for captive Pacas and the one most likely to require restraint or assistance. Wild Pacas wear their nails down naturally through digging in soil, walking on rough substrates, and climbing over rocks and root systems, but captive animals housed on softer substrates often develop overgrown nails that curve inward, catch on bedding and enclosure furnishings, and eventually interfere with normal gait. Heavy-duty small-animal nail clippers or guillotine-style trimmers designed for medium-sized dogs are appropriate tools, and the trimming should remove only the tip of the nail beyond the visible quick. Dark-pigmented nails make quick identification difficult, so conservative trimming in small increments is safer than attempting to take off a significant length in one cut.

Dental health monitoring, while not a grooming task in the traditional sense, should be incorporated into the regular grooming and handling routine. Each time the Paca is handled for grooming, gently examine the incisors by lifting the lips to check for symmetrical wear, appropriate length, proper alignment, and absence of chips or discoloration. The incisors of a healthy Paca should meet evenly, show smooth wear surfaces, and be uniformly pigmented with the characteristic yellow-orange enamel of a hystricomorph rodent. Any asymmetry, overgrowth on one side, visible fractures, or pale or white discoloration of the enamel warrants a veterinary evaluation, as these signs may indicate malocclusion, metabolic disease, or trauma that requires professional assessment.

Transport Carriers

A sturdy, appropriately sized transport carrier is an essential piece of equipment for any Paca keeper, needed for veterinary visits, emergency evacuations, temporary housing during enclosure cleaning or repairs, and any situation that requires moving the animal safely from one location to another. Selecting the right carrier before it is urgently needed avoids the dangerous improvisation that occurs when keepers attempt to transport a large, powerful, easily frightened rodent in a container that is too small, too flimsy, or too insecure to contain the animal safely.

Hard-sided plastic carriers designed for medium to large cats or small dogs represent the best commercially available option for Paca transport. The carrier should be large enough for the Paca to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, which for an average adult means a carrier rated for animals in the twenty-five to thirty-pound range. All-plastic construction is preferable to carriers with wire doors, as a panicking Paca can bend thin wire components and potentially injure its teeth or face attempting to gnaw through a wire gate. If a carrier with a wire door is the only option available, covering the door completely with a thick towel secured with clips eliminates the visual stimulation that drives escape attempts and prevents the animal from accessing the wire with its teeth.

Ventilation in the carrier must be adequate without creating openings large enough for the Paca to push its nose or paws through. Standard ventilation slots on commercial cat carriers are generally appropriate, but any ventilation panels made from thin plastic grid material should be reinforced or replaced with hardware cloth, as a stressed Paca can chew through lightweight plastic grids quickly enough to create an escape route during a car trip. The floor of the carrier should be lined with a thick layer of hay or fleece to provide traction, insulation, and comfort, and a small hide or fabric cover draped over the carrier reduces visual stimulation and helps the animal settle during transport.

Acclimating the Paca to the carrier before it is needed for actual transport dramatically reduces stress during real-world use. Leave the carrier in or near the enclosure with the door open or removed, a favorite food item inside, and familiar bedding material lining the floor. Over a period of days to weeks, the Paca should begin voluntarily entering the carrier to eat, explore, or rest, at which point the door can be briefly closed and immediately reopened, gradually increasing the duration of closed-door sessions. A Paca that views the carrier as a safe, familiar space rather than an unfamiliar trap will load and travel with far less stress and dramatically lower risk of injury during transport.

Harness and Leash Options

Harness training a Paca is a niche undertaking that is neither universally necessary nor appropriate for every individual animal, but for keepers who wish to provide supervised outdoor exploration or who need to manage the animal during controlled exercise periods outside the enclosure, a properly fitted harness is the only safe restraint option. Collars are categorically inappropriate for Pacas, as the anatomy of the rodent neck does not provide the skeletal structures needed to distribute collar pressure safely, and a panicking Paca pulling against a collar risks tracheal damage, cervical injury, or strangulation.

The harness style best suited to Pacas is an H-style or figure-eight body harness that distributes pressure across the chest and shoulders rather than concentrating it at the throat. Rabbit harnesses sold in larger sizes sometimes fit juvenile Pacas, but adult animals typically require a harness designed for small dogs or cats, adjusted to account for the Paca's barrel-shaped torso and shorter limbs. The harness must be snug enough that the Paca cannot back out of it by flattening its body and reversing, a maneuver that rodents perform instinctively when they feel restrained and that will result in escape if the harness is even slightly loose. Two fingers should fit between the harness straps and the body at the tightest adjustment point.

Retractable leashes are dangerous for Pacas because the sudden tension changes and mechanical noise of the retraction mechanism can trigger panic bolting, and the thin cord or ribbon used in retractable designs can cut into the animal's skin or the handler's hands during a sudden lunge. A flat nylon or cotton webbing lead with a secure swivel clip provides reliable control without the risks associated with retractable mechanisms. The keeper should never wrap the leash around their hand or wrist, as a startled Paca can generate enough sudden force to cause joint injuries if the leash is anchored to the handler's body.

Harness training must proceed at the Paca's pace and should begin indoors in a familiar, calm environment long before any outdoor excursion is attempted. Initial sessions involve simply placing the harness on the animal and allowing it to move freely in the enclosure while wearing the harness with no leash attached, rewarding calm behavior with high-value treats. Once the Paca shows no stress response to wearing the harness, a lightweight leash can be attached and allowed to trail loosely while the animal moves around its enclosure or a Paca-proofed room. Only after the animal demonstrates consistent comfort with the harness and trailing leash should outdoor sessions be considered, and these should initially take place in a quiet, enclosed yard rather than areas with dogs, traffic, or other sources of sudden stimulation that could trigger a flight response.

Cleaning and Sanitation Supplies

Maintaining an effective cleaning supply inventory specifically designated for Paca enclosure maintenance ensures that sanitation tasks are performed consistently and safely, without the temptation to use whatever household cleaner happens to be on hand. Rodents are considerably more sensitive to chemical residues than humans, and products that are safe for cleaning kitchen counters or bathroom floors may contain fragrances, surfactants, or disinfectant compounds that irritate a Paca's respiratory system, damage its skin, or cause toxicity if ingested during the animal's habitual gnawing and licking of enclosure surfaces.

Enzymatic cleaners formulated for pet use are the preferred daily-use cleaning product for Paca enclosures. These products use biological enzyme cultures to break down urine, feces, and organic debris at the molecular level, eliminating odor at its source rather than masking it with fragrance. They are generally nontoxic once dry, leave minimal residue, and do not produce the fumes that chemical disinfectants generate. A spray bottle of enzymatic cleaner, a stack of disposable paper towels or washable microfiber cloths, and a small dustpan and brush for collecting solid waste constitute the essential daily-cleaning kit that should be stored within easy reach of the enclosure.

For weekly and monthly deep-cleaning sessions that require actual disinfection rather than routine soil removal, a diluted chlorhexidine solution or an accelerated hydrogen peroxide product provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial action without the toxicity risks associated with bleach, quaternary ammonium compounds, or phenol-based disinfectants. Chlorhexidine is widely used in veterinary settings for exactly this reason and is effective against bacteria, fungi, and many viruses at concentrations that pose minimal risk to animals once the surfaces have dried. A working solution of chlorhexidine at the concentration recommended on the veterinary-grade product label can be prepared in a dedicated spray bottle and stored at room temperature for up to one week before a fresh batch is needed.

Beyond chemical cleaning products, the physical tools used for enclosure maintenance deserve consideration. A dedicated set of scrub brushes, sponges, and scrapers that are used exclusively for the Paca enclosure and never cross-contaminated with household cleaning prevents accidental introduction of cleaning chemicals from other areas of the home. A small handheld steam cleaner can be an excellent investment for keepers who want to sanitize hard surfaces without any chemical use whatsoever, as the high-temperature steam kills bacteria and parasites on contact while leaving no residue of any kind. All cleaning tools should be hung or stored in a ventilated area where they can dry completely between uses, since damp brushes and sponges become breeding grounds for the same bacteria they are intended to remove.
