Space Requirements

Degus are exceptionally active rodents that need far more space than their small body size might suggest. A pair of degus — and degus should always be kept in at least pairs — requires a minimum cage footprint of roughly 24 by 24 inches with multiple levels adding significant vertical space. Larger is always better, and experienced keepers generally recommend the biggest enclosure that fits the available room and budget.

Vertical space is just as important as floor area for degus. In the wild they navigate rocky terrain, burrow underground, and climb shrubs, so a tall multi-level cage satisfies their instinct to explore in three dimensions. A cage height of at least 24 inches is a reasonable minimum for two degus, but taller enclosures with well-placed platforms and ramps allow for much richer movement patterns and reduce territorial stress.

Bar spacing is a critical safety factor that is often overlooked. Degus are smaller and more agile than rats, and young degus in particular can squeeze through surprisingly narrow gaps. Bar spacing should not exceed half an inch to prevent escapes or injuries from animals getting stuck partway through. Cages marketed for rats or ferrets may have wider spacing that works for adults but poses a risk for juveniles.

Placement of the enclosure within the home matters as well. Degus are diurnal and benefit from natural light cycles, but the cage should never be placed in direct sunlight, which can cause overheating. A room with consistent moderate temperatures — ideally between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit — and low humidity is best. Drafty areas near exterior doors, air conditioning vents, and kitchens with cooking fumes should all be avoided.

Cage Types & Materials

Metal wire cages with solid bases are the most popular housing option for degus and generally offer the best combination of ventilation, visibility, and durability. The wire should be powder-coated or treated to resist rust, and the base tray should be deep enough to contain bedding without excessive spillage. All-metal construction is strongly preferred over cages with plastic components, because degus are relentless chewers and will destroy plastic shelves, bases, and connectors within days.

Glass or acrylic terrariums provide excellent visibility and contain bedding well, but they come with significant ventilation concerns. Ammonia from urine can build up quickly in an enclosed glass tank, creating respiratory problems for animals that are already prone to respiratory issues. If a terrarium-style enclosure is used, it must have a well-ventilated mesh top and may require more frequent cleaning than a wire cage to maintain adequate air quality.

Custom-built enclosures using wood frames and metal mesh panels are increasingly popular among dedicated degu keepers. These allow for creative multi-level designs and can be sized exactly to the space available. However, all interior wood surfaces must be untreated or sealed with a pet-safe coating, and any exposed wood edges will eventually be chewed and may need periodic replacement.

Avoiding certain materials is essential regardless of cage type. Plastic components of any kind — shelves, tubes, wheels housed in plastic enclosures, and snap-on accessories — are unsafe. Degus chew constantly, and ingested plastic can cause intestinal blockages. Cedar and pine shavings, sometimes used as bedding, release aromatic oils that are harmful to small mammal respiratory systems and should be replaced with paper-based or kiln-dried alternatives.

Bedding & Substrate

Choosing the right bedding is one of the most impactful decisions for both degu health and cage maintenance. Paper-based bedding products are widely considered the safest and most practical option. They are highly absorbent, virtually dust-free, and do not release the volatile oils associated with softwood shavings. They come in various textures from fluffy to pelleted, and many degus enjoy burrowing and nesting in the looser varieties.

Kiln-dried pine shavings are an acceptable alternative to paper bedding, provided they have been properly heat-treated to remove the phenol compounds that make raw pine dangerous. The kiln-drying process eliminates the aromatic oils while retaining the natural absorbency of the wood. Aspen shavings are another safe wood-based option, as aspen does not contain the problematic oils found in cedar and untreated pine.

Bedding depth should be generous — at least two to three inches across the base of the cage — to allow for burrowing behavior, which is a natural and important activity for degus. In one section of the cage, providing an even deeper layer of substrate or a dedicated digging box filled with a soil and sand mixture can offer excellent enrichment. Chinchilla-grade dust bath sand placed in a separate container also serves a vital role in coat maintenance, though it functions as a grooming tool rather than bedding.

Cleaning frequency depends on the size of the cage, the number of degus, and the type of bedding used. Spot-cleaning soiled areas daily and performing a full bedding change weekly is a reasonable baseline for most setups. Degus tend to designate specific corners as bathroom areas, which makes spot-cleaning efficient. During full changes, the base tray should be wiped down with a pet-safe disinfectant and thoroughly dried before fresh bedding is added.

Platforms, Ramps & Interior Layout

The interior layout of a degu cage is where housing transforms from a container into a habitat. Multiple solid platforms at varying heights create distinct zones for sleeping, eating, and activity. Platforms should be made of untreated hardwood, kiln-dried pine, or metal — never plastic. Wooden platforms serve a dual purpose by also providing a chewing surface that helps maintain dental health.

Ramps connecting platforms should have a textured surface or cross-slats to provide grip. Smooth ramps can cause degus to slip, particularly older animals or those with less agile footing. The angle of the ramp matters too — steep inclines are harder to navigate safely, and a gentler slope with adequate width allows degus to pass each other without conflict on busy routes between levels.

Hammocks and hanging shelves made from natural fabrics like fleece or cotton add comfort and variety to the cage layout. Degus enjoy lounging in fabric hammocks, and the slight sway provides a different resting experience than a rigid platform. However, all fabric items must be inspected regularly for fraying threads or holes, as loose threads can wrap around toes and cause circulation injuries.

Leaving some open vertical space for jumping is important. Degus are capable of impressive leaps and will jump between platforms when given the opportunity. A cage that is completely packed with accessories and platforms can actually restrict natural movement. The goal is a balanced layout that provides complexity and choice without eliminating the open space needed for climbing and jumping.

Climate Considerations

Degus originate from the semi-arid regions of Chile, where temperatures are moderate and humidity is low. They are significantly more sensitive to heat than many other small mammals and can suffer heatstroke at temperatures that would be comfortable for humans. Keeping the ambient temperature of their room between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal, and temperatures above 80 degrees can become dangerous, particularly in poorly ventilated cages.

Humidity control is often an overlooked aspect of degu housing. High humidity promotes bacterial growth in bedding, accelerates ammonia buildup, and can contribute to respiratory infections. In naturally humid climates or during wet seasons, a dehumidifier in the room can make a meaningful difference. The cage itself should be positioned away from bathrooms, laundry areas, and kitchens where moisture levels tend to spike.

Draft protection is necessary even though ventilation is important. Placing a cage near a window that is frequently opened, or next to an exterior door that lets in cold air during winter, creates temperature fluctuations that stress degus. A location with stable, moderate airflow — enough to prevent stale air but not enough to create a noticeable breeze at cage level — strikes the right balance.

For keepers in regions with extreme seasonal temperature swings, additional measures may be needed. Ceramic heat emitters designed for small animals can provide supplemental warmth during cold spells without the light output that would disrupt the degu's natural day-night cycle. Cooling options during heat waves include placing ceramic tiles in the cage as cool resting surfaces, positioning a fan to circulate air around (not directly into) the cage, and ensuring the room's air conditioning is functioning reliably.

Multi-Degu Households

Degus are obligate social animals, meaning solitary housing causes measurable stress and behavioral deterioration. A minimum of two degus is necessary for their psychological well-being, and groups of three to five often display even richer social behavior. However, housing multiple degus introduces dynamics that the enclosure must be designed to accommodate.

Multiple food stations and water sources are essential in any group housing setup. Even in bonded groups, subtle dominance hierarchies exist, and a single food bowl or water bottle can become a point of resource guarding. Providing at least one feeding station and one water source per two degus, placed at different locations and levels within the cage, reduces competition and ensures subordinate animals maintain adequate nutrition and hydration.

Hide spaces and sleeping areas should outnumber the degus in the cage. If three degus share an enclosure, at least four enclosed hiding spots should be available. This gives every animal the option to retreat and rest without being forced into close contact with a cage mate during moments of social tension. Nesting boxes, tunnels, and covered hammocks all count as retreat options.

Introducing new degus to an existing group requires careful management and often a separate introduction cage or split-cage method. Placing unfamiliar degus directly into an established group's territory frequently results in serious aggression. The introduction process can take days to weeks and involves gradually increasing contact through mesh barriers before allowing full physical access. Having a spare cage or a reliable divider panel is not optional equipment for anyone planning to introduce new animals.
