Degus are among the most intelligent and curious rodents commonly kept as pets, and their play behavior reflects this. They are active problem-solvers who quickly lose interest in static objects and thrive on novelty and challenge. Understanding their natural behavior is essential for choosing toys that will actually get used rather than ignored after the first day.

In the wild, degus spend a significant portion of their waking hours foraging, digging, and navigating complex terrain. Their play in captivity mirrors these drives — they want to dig, chew, climb, and manipulate objects with their dexterous front paws. They also engage in social play with cage mates, including chasing, wrestling, and cooperative exploration of new objects, which means enrichment planning should account for group dynamics rather than just individual stimulation.

Degus are diurnal, so their peak activity windows align with daytime hours, typically with bursts of energy in the morning and late afternoon. Timing the introduction of new toys or rotation of existing ones to coincide with these active periods maximizes engagement. A toy placed in the cage during a rest period may be completely overlooked until the next activity cycle.

The chewing drive in degus is constant and powerful. Their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, and gnawing is both a physical necessity and a deeply satisfying behavior. Any enrichment plan that does not include ample chewing opportunities is incomplete, regardless of how many other types of toys are provided.

Exercise Wheels & Running

An exercise wheel is arguably the single most important piece of enrichment equipment for caged degus. These animals can run several miles in a single night in the wild, and a well-designed wheel allows them to express this running behavior in captivity. However, wheel selection for degus involves specific safety requirements that differ from those for hamsters or mice.

The wheel must have a solid running surface — never wire mesh or rungs. Wire wheels cause a condition commonly known as bumblefoot, where repeated impact on thin metal bars creates painful sores and infections on the footpads. A solid metal or wooden wheel with a continuous running surface eliminates this risk entirely. The interior surface should have a slight texture or grip to prevent slipping.

Size matters significantly. A wheel that is too small forces the degu to arch its back unnaturally while running, which can lead to spinal problems over time. The minimum recommended diameter for a degu wheel is approximately 12 inches, though many keepers prefer even larger options. When a degu runs on a properly sized wheel, its back should remain straight or have only a very slight natural curve.

Noise is a practical concern for keepers, even though degus are daytime runners. Cheap wheels with poor bearings produce squeaking and rattling that can be disruptive in shared living spaces. Ball-bearing wheels run nearly silently and tend to last much longer than friction-bearing alternatives. The mount should also be stable — a wobbling wheel discourages use and can become a hazard if it detaches from the cage wall.

Chew Toys & Dental Health

Chewing is not optional enrichment for degus — it is a biological necessity. Their incisors and molars grow continuously, and without adequate wear, teeth can become overgrown, misaligned, or develop painful spurs that interfere with eating. Providing a variety of safe chewing materials is one of the most straightforward ways to support long-term dental health.

Untreated hardwood blocks and sticks are the foundation of any degu chew toy collection. Apple, pear, hazel, willow, and kiln-dried pine are all safe wood types. Branches can be offered whole for the degu to strip bark from, or cut into smaller blocks that they can hold and gnaw on. Avoid any wood that has been treated with pesticides, stains, or preservatives, and never use wood from trees known to be toxic to rodents, such as cherry, plum, or cedar.

Pumice stones and lava rocks provide a different chewing texture that some degus prefer, particularly for wearing down the sides of their molars. These mineral-based chew options last longer than wood and can be attached to cage walls at various heights to encourage climbing and chewing simultaneously. They should be firmly mounted to prevent them from falling and potentially injuring an animal below.

Woven grass and hay-based chew toys serve a triple function — dental wear, fiber intake, and foraging enrichment. Braided hay rings, woven grass balls, and compressed hay cubes all encourage extended chewing sessions. These items are consumable and need regular replacement, but their low cost and the degree of engagement they provide make them excellent staples in any degu enrichment rotation.

Digging & Foraging Enrichment

Digging is one of the most deeply ingrained natural behaviors in degus, and providing outlets for it in captivity yields significant welfare benefits. A dedicated digging box — a deep container filled with a mixture of organic potting soil (free of fertilizers and perlite), coconut coir, and sand — allows degus to express burrowing behavior that a shallow layer of cage bedding cannot fully satisfy.

Foraging enrichment turns mealtime into an activity rather than a passive event. Scattering pellets throughout the bedding rather than placing them in a bowl forces degus to search for their food, mimicking the natural foraging behavior that would occupy much of their day in the wild. This simple change extends the time degus spend engaged with their food and reduces boredom-related behaviors like repetitive bar chewing.

More advanced foraging setups can involve hiding food inside cardboard tubes stuffed with hay, wrapping treats in paper parcels, or placing food inside puzzle feeders designed for small animals. The difficulty level should be calibrated to the individual degus — start simple and gradually increase the challenge as they learn to solve each puzzle. Frustration from an impossible task is counterproductive, so observing how quickly they solve each setup guides appropriate progression.

Rotating foraging methods keeps the enrichment effective over time. Degus learn quickly, and a puzzle that took twenty minutes to solve on the first attempt may take thirty seconds after a week of daily exposure. Alternating between scatter feeding, tube puzzles, wrapped parcels, and hanging treat dispensers maintains the novelty that drives engagement.

Tunnels, Bridges & Climbing Structures

Tunnels tap into the degu's natural affinity for enclosed spaces and underground pathways. In the wild, degus maintain elaborate burrow systems with multiple entrances and chambers, and tunnel-style toys replicate this environment above ground. Safe tunnel materials include untreated wood, cork bark, ceramic, and woven grass. Plastic tunnels should be avoided entirely, as degus will chew through them rapidly, creating sharp edges and ingestible fragments.

Cork bark tubes are particularly well-suited for degus. They are natural, chew-safe, and come in irregular shapes that add visual and textural variety to the cage. Large-diameter cork rounds can be stacked or positioned at angles to create multi-level pathway systems. They are more durable than grass tunnels and provide a rougher surface that degus seem to prefer for climbing and gripping.

Bridges made from wooden slats connected by wire or natural fiber rope add horizontal movement options between platforms and cage walls. Suspension bridges that flex slightly under the degu's weight provide a different locomotion challenge than rigid platforms and engage balancing instincts. The connectors should be checked regularly for wear, as gnawing on the support ropes can weaken the bridge over time.

Climbing branches and driftwood pieces create naturalistic vertical structures that encourage scrambling and jumping. Securing larger branches firmly to the cage walls or floor prevents them from shifting or falling during active climbing. The irregular surfaces of natural wood also provide varied footing that helps maintain nail length through normal use, reducing the need for manual nail trimming.

DIY & Budget Options

Some of the most effective degu enrichment costs little or nothing to produce. Cardboard is an outstanding free resource — toilet paper rolls, paper towel tubes, small cardboard boxes, and egg cartons can all be repurposed into foraging puzzles, chew toys, and hiding spots. Degus will shred cardboard with visible enthusiasm, and the act of destruction is itself a form of enrichment. Ensure all cardboard is free of heavy ink, adhesive tape, staples, and glossy coatings.

Paper bags, crumpled newspaper (printed with soy-based ink), and plain brown packing paper make excellent temporary cage additions. Stuffing a paper bag with hay and a few hidden pellets creates an instant foraging challenge that most degus will spend considerable time investigating and dismantling. These items are meant to be destroyed and discarded after a single use, which actually works in the enrichment rotation's favor by ensuring constant novelty.

DIY wooden platforms and shelves can be cut from untreated hardwood boards using basic hand tools. Sanding the edges smooth and attaching them to the cage with bolts and wing nuts allows for easy repositioning and replacement when they become too chewed. This approach is significantly cheaper than purchasing commercial wooden cage accessories and allows for custom sizing that fits the specific cage dimensions.

A sand bath station made from a heavy ceramic dish or a glass baking dish filled with chinchilla-grade bathing sand provides both grooming and play enrichment. Degus roll vigorously in sand to maintain their coat, and the behavior is clearly enjoyable for them. The bath does not need to be available at all times — offering it for thirty minutes a few times per week keeps the sand cleaner and turns bath time into an anticipated event.
