Unregulated heaters can reach surface temperatures well above 120 degrees Fahrenheit, which causes severe thermal burns that are painful, disfiguring, and potentially fatal.

On-off thermostats are the simplest type, functioning like a basic switch that cuts power to the heater when the probe temperature exceeds the set point and restores power when it drops below. They work adequately for heat mats and ceramic heat emitters but create slight temperature oscillations as the heater cycles on and off. For most leopard gecko setups, this minor fluctuation is well within acceptable range and poses no health risk.

Proportional thermostats, also called dimming or pulse-proportional thermostats, regulate power output continuously rather than switching it entirely on or off. Digital record keeping tools help keepers track feeding schedules, weight changes, shedding cycles, supplement rotations, and veterinary history in a format that is far more useful than memory alone. Over the lifespan of a gecko that may live fifteen to twenty years, these records become invaluable.

Dedicated reptile keeping apps have emerged as purpose-built tools for tracking husbandry data. These apps typically include fields for feeding logs, weight records, shedding dates, enclosure maintenance schedules, and veterinary visit notes. Some include reminder notifications for tasks like supplement rotation, bulb replacement, and vet checkup scheduling. The advantage over a general-purpose note-taking app is that the data is structured and searchable, making it easy to identify patterns or answer a veterinarian's questions about your gecko's history.
