Space Requirements

Leopard geckos are ground-dwelling reptiles native to the arid grasslands and rocky deserts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwestern India. Their enclosure should reflect this terrestrial lifestyle — floor space matters far more than vertical height. A single adult leopard gecko requires a minimum of a 20-gallon long tank, which provides roughly 30 inches of length and 12 inches of depth. While this has been the long-standing industry recommendation, many experienced keepers now advocate for 40-gallon breeder tanks or equivalent front-opening terrariums as a more appropriate minimum.

The argument for larger enclosures is straightforward. A bigger tank allows for a more effective temperature gradient, more room for hides and enrichment, and more natural movement patterns. Leopard geckos are more active than their reputation suggests, especially during the evening and nighttime hours, and a cramped enclosure leads to stress behaviors like glass surfing — repeatedly pacing along the enclosure walls.

For juvenile geckos, a smaller enclosure of 10 to 15 gallons is actually preferable during the first few months. Babies can become stressed and have difficulty finding food in a large space. As the gecko grows, transitioning to its adult enclosure between four and six months of age is a common approach. Some keepers use the smaller tank as a quarantine or hospital enclosure once the gecko moves to its permanent home.

Housing multiple leopard geckos together is generally discouraged despite their seemingly docile nature. Males are territorial and will fight, sometimes inflicting serious injuries. Even female pairs or groups can experience dominance issues, with submissive individuals being denied access to heat, hides, and food. The safest and least stressful approach is one gecko per enclosure.

Enclosure Types & Materials

Glass aquariums remain the most popular enclosure choice for leopard geckos due to their affordability, availability, and excellent visibility. Standard rectangular tanks with screen lids work well, though they can lose heat and humidity more quickly than enclosed designs. A glass tank with a mesh top requires careful attention to heating placement to maintain proper temperatures, especially in cooler rooms.

Front-opening terrariums designed specifically for reptiles have become increasingly popular and offer several practical advantages. The front-access doors reduce stress during handling and maintenance because you are not reaching down from above, which mimics a predator's approach and can startle ground-dwelling species. These enclosures also typically feature built-in ventilation strips, raised bottom panels for undertank heater placement, and cord management ports in the back wall.

PVC and wooden vivariums are favored by keepers who maintain multiple geckos because they retain heat more efficiently than glass, stack easily on rack systems, and are lighter than equivalent glass enclosures. The trade-off is reduced visibility — most PVC enclosures have a single glass or acrylic front panel rather than the three-sided viewing of a glass tank. For keepers who prioritize the animal's comfort over display, this is a worthwhile compromise.

Plastic storage tubs are commonly used in breeding operations and by keepers with large collections. They hold heat and humidity well, are inexpensive, and can be easily modified with ventilation holes and heat cable. While they lack visual appeal, tub setups are functional and perfectly adequate for the gecko's wellbeing as long as ventilation, heating, and enrichment needs are met.

Substrate & Flooring

Substrate selection is one of the most debated topics in leopard gecko keeping. The primary concern is impaction — a digestive blockage caused by ingesting loose substrate particles during feeding. This risk is highest in juveniles and geckos housed on fine-particle substrates like calci-sand, which clumps when wet and can form dangerous masses in the digestive tract. For this reason, many keepers avoid loose substrates entirely, especially for young geckos.

Solid substrates eliminate impaction risk and are easy to clean. Paper towels are the simplest option and are widely recommended for quarantine setups, juvenile enclosures, and any situation where monitoring fecal output is important. Reptile carpet provides a more natural appearance and can be washed and reused, though it requires at least two pieces so one can be in the wash while the other is in use. Slate or ceramic tile is an excellent choice that holds heat from undertank heaters, is easy to wipe clean, and gives geckos a textured surface for traction.

For keepers who want a more naturalistic setup, bioactive substrates have gained significant traction in recent years. A properly constructed bioactive substrate uses a drainage layer, a mesh barrier, and a topsoil-based mix with leaf litter. A cleanup crew of isopods and springtails breaks down waste naturally, reducing the need for spot cleaning. When done correctly, bioactive enclosures are self-sustaining and provide excellent enrichment. However, they require research, proper layering, and establishment time before introducing the gecko.

Calci-sand, colored sand, and walnut shell substrates should be avoided entirely. Despite being marketed toward reptile keepers, these products pose real impaction risks and offer no meaningful benefit over safer alternatives. If a loose substrate is desired, a mix of organic topsoil and play sand at a ratio of roughly 70 to 30 provides a more natural and less dangerous option, though it should still be avoided for geckos under a year old.

Heating & Temperature Zones

Leopard geckos are ectothermic, meaning they regulate their body temperature by moving between warmer and cooler areas of their environment. Creating a proper thermal gradient across the enclosure is essential for digestion, immune function, and overall metabolic health. The warm side of the enclosure should maintain a surface temperature of approximately 88 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit, while the cool side should sit around 72 to 77 degrees. Nighttime temperatures can drop to the low 70s without issue.

Undertank heat mats are the traditional heating method for leopard geckos and remain effective when used correctly. The heat mat should cover roughly one-third of the enclosure floor on the warm side and must always be connected to a thermostat. Without a thermostat, heat mats can reach temperatures well above 100 degrees, causing thermal burns through the substrate. A quality thermostat is not optional — it is the single most important safety device in the enclosure.

Overhead heating options such as ceramic heat emitters, deep heat projectors, and halogen flood bulbs have become increasingly recommended as primary or supplementary heat sources. These devices heat from above, which more closely mimics the sun's natural warming effect and allows for the creation of a basking zone with both surface and ambient warmth. Deep heat projectors in particular produce infrared radiation that penetrates tissue similarly to sunlight, promoting more natural thermoregulatory behavior.

Regardless of the heat source, temperature should be verified with reliable instruments rather than guessed. A digital thermometer with a probe on the warm side floor gives accurate readings, and an infrared temperature gun allows spot-checking of surface temperatures anywhere in the enclosure. The stick-on analog thermometers sold at pet stores are notoriously inaccurate and should not be relied upon for anything more than a rough ambient reading.

Hides & Interior Layout

Leopard geckos are secretive animals that spend the majority of daylight hours hiding. A minimum of three hides is recommended: one on the warm side, one on the cool side, and one humid hide for shedding. Without adequate hiding options, geckos experience chronic stress that suppresses their immune system, reduces appetite, and shortens their lifespan. A gecko that feels exposed will often resort to glass surfing, excessive digging, or spending all its time pressed against the enclosure walls.

The warm hide should sit directly over the primary heat source so the gecko can digest food while feeling secure. The cool hide provides a retreat on the opposite end of the thermal gradient. The humid hide — also called a moist hide — is typically placed on the warm side and filled with damp sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, or paper towel. This creates a microclimate of elevated humidity that the gecko uses during shedding cycles to loosen old skin. The humid hide should be checked and re-moistened every day or two.

Beyond the essential three hides, additional elements enhance the enclosure and encourage exploration. Cork bark flats and tubes, resin rock formations, and stacked slate create visual barriers and additional hiding spots. Climbing opportunities like low branches or textured backgrounds give geckos a chance to explore vertically, even though they are primarily terrestrial. The goal is to break up the enclosure into distinct zones rather than leaving large open areas that make the gecko feel vulnerable.

Plant cover, whether live or artificial, adds visual complexity and creates additional shaded areas. Live plants like pothos or small succulents can be used in bioactive setups, while high-quality artificial plants offer the same visual benefits without the maintenance. Avoid any decor with sharp edges, small detachable pieces, or toxic coatings. Every item placed in the enclosure should be stable enough that it cannot fall and crush the gecko.

Lighting & Photoperiod

The role of lighting in leopard gecko husbandry has evolved considerably over the past decade. Traditional advice held that leopard geckos, being crepuscular, did not need any special lighting. While it is true that they do not bask under intense light the way a bearded dragon does, current research and keeper experience increasingly support the use of low-level UVB lighting to promote natural vitamin D3 synthesis and improve overall wellbeing.

A low-output UVB bulb in the range of two to seven percent, mounted inside the enclosure or on top of a mesh screen lid, provides beneficial ultraviolet radiation without being overwhelming. The UVB zone should cover roughly one-third to one-half of the enclosure, allowing the gecko to self-regulate its exposure by moving in and out of the lit area. UVB bulbs degrade over time and should be replaced according to the manufacturer's schedule, typically every six to twelve months, even if the visible light output appears unchanged.

A consistent day-night cycle is important for regulating your gecko's circadian rhythm and seasonal behaviors. A twelve-hour light and twelve-hour dark cycle works well for most of the year, with some keepers adjusting to ten hours of light in winter and fourteen in summer to simulate seasonal variation. A simple timer on the light fixture ensures consistency without daily manual effort.

Red and blue nighttime bulbs, once widely recommended for viewing nocturnal reptile activity, are now considered unnecessary and potentially disruptive. Research suggests that reptiles can perceive these wavelengths, and constant exposure to colored light at night may interfere with rest cycles. If nighttime observation is desired, brief use of a dim white or infrared light is preferable. For nighttime heating, lightless ceramic heat emitters or deep heat projectors maintain temperatures without any visible light output.
