A clean, shallow water dish is one of the most basic but essential accessories in any leopard gecko enclosure. Despite being a desert species, leopard geckos need access to fresh water at all times. The dish should be heavy enough to resist tipping and shallow enough that there is no risk of drowning — a depth of half an inch to one inch is appropriate for adults, even shallower for juveniles.

Ceramic and stone dishes are the best options because their weight provides stability and their surfaces are easy to sanitize. Avoid plastic dishes that scratch easily, as bacteria colonize scratched surfaces far more readily than smooth ones. Some keepers use small ceramic ramekins or saucers from kitchen supply stores, which are often cheaper and more durable than products marketed specifically for reptiles.

Water should be changed daily, and the dish should be scrubbed with a reptile-safe disinfectant weekly. Leopard geckos occasionally defecate in their water bowls, and standing water in a warm environment becomes a bacterial breeding ground quickly. Using filtered or dechlorinated water is a good practice, though most municipal tap water that is safe for human consumption is also acceptable for reptiles.

Drip systems and small reptile fountains are available but generally unnecessary for leopard geckos. These products are designed more for tropical species that rely on moving water as a drinking cue. Some leopard geckos are drawn to the movement and may drink more readily from a dripper, but the added complexity and cleaning requirements make them a niche accessory rather than an essential.

Thermometers & Hygrometers

Accurate temperature monitoring is critical to leopard gecko health, and the measuring instruments you choose directly affect your ability to maintain a safe environment. Every leopard gecko enclosure should have at minimum two thermometers — one monitoring the warm side and one on the cool side — along with a hygrometer to track humidity levels.

Digital thermometers with external probes provide the most accurate readings for continuous monitoring. The probe should be placed at substrate level on the warm side, directly where the gecko would be sitting, since air temperature several inches above the floor can differ significantly from surface temperature. Many keepers mount the digital display on the outside of the enclosure for easy reading without opening the tank.

Infrared temperature guns are invaluable for spot-checking surface temperatures across the entire enclosure. A quick scan with a temp gun reveals the actual thermal gradient from one end to the other, identifies hot spots that might be dangerously warm, and confirms that the basking area is within the target range. They are also useful for checking the temperature inside hides, which can differ from the surrounding area depending on the hide material and placement.

Analog dial thermometers and the adhesive strip thermometers commonly sold in pet stores are the least reliable options. They measure air temperature rather than surface temperature, have wide margins of error, and provide readings that are often several degrees off from the actual conditions. If these are the only instruments you have, they can serve as rough guides, but investing in a quality digital thermometer and a temp gun is one of the most impactful upgrades a keeper can make.

Cleaning & Sanitation Supplies

Maintaining a clean enclosure prevents bacterial infections, parasitic infestations, and respiratory issues. A regular cleaning routine requires a few dedicated supplies that should be kept separate from household cleaning materials to avoid accidental chemical contamination.

Daily spot cleaning is the foundation of enclosure hygiene. Leopard geckos typically designate a single corner as their bathroom, making waste removal straightforward. A small scoop or pair of dedicated tongs allows you to remove feces and urates quickly without disturbing the rest of the enclosure. Paper towel substrate makes this especially easy since the soiled section can simply be lifted out and replaced.

A full enclosure cleaning should be performed every four to six weeks, or more frequently if the enclosure develops odors. This involves removing the gecko to a secure temporary container, taking out all decor and substrate, and washing every surface with a reptile-safe disinfectant. Common options include dilute chlorhexidine solution and veterinary-grade cleaners formulated for reptile enclosures. Household bleach diluted to a ratio of one part bleach to thirty parts water is also effective, but all surfaces must be thoroughly rinsed and completely dried before the gecko is returned.

Decor items and hides should be cleaned during full cleaning sessions. Resin and plastic items can be soaked in disinfectant solution and scrubbed. Natural items like cork bark and wood can be baked in an oven at a low temperature to kill bacteria and parasites without chemicals. Reptile carpet should be machine-washed with hot water and no detergent, or hand-washed with reptile-safe cleaner. Having duplicate sets of hides and decor makes the cleaning process faster since you can swap in clean items immediately and clean the dirty set at your convenience.

Feeding Tools & Insect Storage

Having the right feeding accessories simplifies meal preparation and makes the experience more pleasant for both keeper and gecko. Feeding tongs in the ten to twelve inch range are the most frequently used tool, allowing you to present individual insects to the gecko without putting fingers near its mouth. Stainless steel tongs are durable and easy to sterilize, while rubber-tipped versions reduce the risk of injuring the gecko if it strikes with more enthusiasm than accuracy.

Escape-proof feeding dishes help contain mealworms, superworms, and other feeder insects that might otherwise scatter through the enclosure. A smooth-sided ceramic dish with walls high enough to prevent the worms from climbing out works well. Some purpose-built feeder dishes feature inward-curving lips that make escape nearly impossible. The dish should be placed on the warm side so the gecko can find its food easily and digest it properly.

Insect storage containers are a practical necessity for keepers who buy feeders in bulk. Crickets require a ventilated container with egg crate for climbing surfaces, a water source like gel crystals or sliced vegetables, and gut-load food. Mealworms and superworms live comfortably in a container of wheat bran kept at room temperature, with carrot slices for moisture. Dubia roaches need a dark, warm container with egg crate stacked vertically and moderate ventilation.

A small digital scale accurate to the gram is useful for tracking your gecko's weight over time. Monthly weigh-ins help detect gradual weight loss that might not be visible to the eye, especially in the early stages of illness. Record weights in a simple log or spreadsheet to identify trends. A healthy adult leopard gecko typically weighs between 50 and 80 grams depending on sex and genetics, and sudden drops of more than five to ten percent warrant a closer look at health and husbandry.

Shedding Aids & Skin Care

Leopard geckos shed their skin regularly throughout their lives — juveniles as often as every one to two weeks during rapid growth, adults roughly once a month. A healthy gecko in a properly humidified enclosure will typically complete a shed independently, eating the old skin in the process. However, retained shed — particularly on the toes, tail tip, and around the eyes — is a common issue that can lead to circulation loss and tissue death if not addressed.

The humid hide is the primary shedding accessory and should be present in every enclosure at all times, not just when a shed is anticipated. A simple container with an entrance hole, lined with damp sphagnum moss or paper towel, creates the localized humidity the gecko needs to loosen its old skin. The moss should be misted daily and replaced entirely every week or two to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

When retained shed does occur, a lukewarm soak in shallow water for ten to fifteen minutes helps soften the stuck skin. The water should be no deeper than the gecko's belly and warm to the touch — around 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. After soaking, gently rubbing the affected area with a damp cotton swab often removes the remaining skin. Never pull or forcibly peel shed skin, as this can tear live tissue underneath and cause open wounds.

Shedding aid sprays and reptile-specific skin conditioners are available and can be useful for geckos that experience recurring shed problems. These products are typically applied as a light mist directly on the gecko or on the substrate inside the humid hide. While they can help in stubborn cases, persistent shedding difficulties usually indicate a husbandry issue — insufficient humidity in the moist hide, inadequate hydration, or nutritional deficiencies — and addressing the root cause is more effective than relying on topical products.

Transport & Emergency Supplies

Every leopard gecko keeper needs a transport container and basic emergency supplies on hand for veterinary visits, power outages, or situations that require temporarily relocating the gecko. A small, ventilated plastic container with a secure lid serves as an adequate transport enclosure. Line the bottom with paper towel for traction and include a hide — even a crumpled paper towel provides a sense of security during travel.

Heat packs designed for reptile or small animal transport are essential for maintaining temperature during car rides, especially in cooler weather. These disposable packs generate gentle warmth for several hours when activated. The heat pack should be placed outside the transport container, wrapped in a thin cloth, and positioned so the gecko can move away from it if it becomes too warm. Direct contact between the gecko and the heat pack can cause burns.

A basic first aid kit for leopard geckos should include a few key items: cotton swabs for cleaning minor wounds, a small bottle of dilute chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine for disinfection, unpowdered latex-free gloves, a magnifying glass for close inspection of toes and eyes, and a syringe without a needle for administering water or liquid supplements if the gecko becomes dehydrated. These supplies take up minimal space and can make a significant difference in an emergency situation.

Power outages present a real risk to leopard geckos because loss of heating can drop enclosure temperatures to dangerous levels within hours in winter. Having a plan in place before an outage occurs is far better than scrambling in the moment. Chemical hand warmers placed outside the enclosure — never directly on the glass — provide temporary heat. Wrapping the enclosure in blankets or towels insulates against rapid heat loss. In prolonged outages, transporting the gecko to a heated location becomes necessary, which is where a prepared transport kit proves its value.
