Leopard geckos are obligate insectivores, meaning their entire diet consists of live insects. Unlike many other reptile species that eat a mix of plant matter and protein, leopard geckos require animal-based nutrition exclusively. Their digestive systems are not equipped to process fruits, vegetables, or commercial pellet foods designed for omnivorous reptiles, so every calorie they consume needs to come from appropriately sized feeder insects.

The nutritional foundation for a healthy leopard gecko revolves around a balance of protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus. Feeder insects vary widely in their nutritional profiles, and relying on a single insect species leads to deficiencies over time. Calcium is especially critical because leopard geckos are prone to metabolic bone disease when their calcium-to-phosphorus ratio falls out of balance. A ratio of roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus is the target most experienced keepers aim for.

Age plays a significant role in how much and how often a leopard gecko eats. Juveniles under six months are growing rapidly and need daily feedings of smaller insects, while sub-adults can transition to feeding every other day. Fully grown adults typically eat two to three times per week. Overfeeding adult geckos is a common mistake that leads to obesity, which strains their organs and shortens their lifespan. Monitoring tail thickness is a practical way to gauge body condition — a healthy tail is plump but not bulging at the base.

Hydration is an often-overlooked component of leopard gecko nutrition. While they get moisture from their prey, a shallow water dish should always be available. Some keepers mist the enclosure lightly to encourage drinking, though leopard geckos are desert species and do not require the humidity levels that tropical reptiles need. Fresh, clean water changed daily supports kidney function and aids in shedding.

Feeder Insects & Variety

The staple feeder insects for leopard geckos are crickets and mealworms, both of which are widely available, affordable, and easy to gut-load before feeding. Crickets offer excellent protein content and encourage natural hunting behavior since they move actively around the enclosure. Mealworms are convenient because they can be placed in a dish, reducing the chance of escapees hiding in the substrate and potentially bothering your gecko at night.

Beyond the staples, incorporating variety into the diet improves overall nutrition and keeps your gecko engaged at feeding time. Dubia roaches are an outstanding feeder insect — high in protein, low in fat, and less likely to carry parasites than crickets. They also produce no odor and cannot climb smooth surfaces, making them easy to contain. Black soldier fly larvae are another excellent option, naturally high in calcium, which reduces the need for supplemental dusting.

Waxworms and butterworms serve as high-fat treats that leopard geckos find irresistible, but they should be offered sparingly. Think of them as the equivalent of dessert — useful for enticing a picky eater or helping a recovering gecko gain weight, but problematic if offered too frequently. Some geckos become fixated on waxworms and refuse other feeders, so it is best to limit them to once a week at most.

The size of feeder insects matters more than many new keepers realize. A good rule of thumb is that no insect should be wider than the space between the gecko's eyes. Feeding insects that are too large creates a choking hazard and can cause impaction, a potentially fatal digestive blockage. For juveniles, this means pinhead crickets and mini mealworms; adults can handle full-sized crickets and standard mealworms comfortably.

Gut-Loading & Prey Preparation

Gut-loading is the practice of feeding nutritious foods to feeder insects before offering them to your gecko, effectively turning the insects into nutrient-delivery vehicles. A well-gut-loaded cricket or roach passes along the vitamins and minerals from its own recent meal directly to the gecko that eats it. This is one of the most impactful things a keeper can do to improve their leopard gecko's nutrition, yet it is frequently skipped or done poorly.

Effective gut-loading means feeding insects a varied diet of nutrient-dense foods for at least 24 to 48 hours before they are offered as prey. Good gut-load ingredients include dark leafy greens like collard greens and dandelion leaves, squash, sweet potato, and carrots. Commercial gut-load products are also available in dry and gel formulations, and many keepers use them in combination with fresh produce for convenience. Avoid feeding insects citrus fruits, spinach, or anything high in oxalates, as these bind calcium and reduce the nutritional benefit.

Mealworms and superworms should be kept in a substrate of wheat bran or oat bran with slices of carrot or potato for moisture. This keeps them alive and well-fed until it is time to use them. Crickets are best housed in a ventilated container with egg crate for climbing surfaces and a shallow dish of gut-load food. Proper husbandry of your feeder insects is essentially an extension of caring for your gecko — healthy feeders produce a healthy reptile.

Some keepers breed their own feeder insects to ensure quality and reduce costs over time. Dubia roach colonies are particularly easy to maintain and reproduce steadily in warm, dark conditions. Starting a colony requires an initial investment in breeding stock and a suitable container, but a well-managed colony can supply a single gecko indefinitely within a few months.

Supplements & Dusting

Calcium and vitamin supplementation is non-negotiable for captive leopard geckos. In the wild, these animals consume a far wider variety of prey and absorb calcium from environmental sources that simply are not available in a glass enclosure. Without supplementation, metabolic bone disease is almost inevitable, causing softened bones, deformities, tremors, and in advanced cases, death.

The standard supplementation routine involves three products used on a rotating schedule. A pure calcium powder without vitamin D3 should be available at all times in a small dish inside the enclosure — leopard geckos will lick from it voluntarily when they feel the need. A calcium powder with D3 should be dusted onto feeder insects at every other feeding, since D3 is necessary for calcium absorption but can accumulate to toxic levels if overdosed. A multivitamin powder rounds out the rotation, typically applied once per week to cover trace minerals and fat-soluble vitamins.

Dusting technique affects how much supplement actually reaches your gecko. The goal is a light, even coating on the insects — not a thick crust that falls off immediately or alters the texture so much that the gecko refuses to eat. Placing a few insects in a small bag or cup with a pinch of powder and gently shaking is the most common method. The insects should look lightly frosted, not caked.

Keepers should store supplement powders in a cool, dry place and check expiration dates regularly. Vitamins degrade over time, especially when exposed to heat and moisture, and using expired supplements is essentially the same as not supplementing at all. Buying smaller containers and replacing them every few months is more effective than purchasing large quantities that sit on a shelf for a year.

Commercial Diets & Alternatives

The reptile industry has produced a range of commercial diets marketed toward gecko keepers, including freeze-dried insects, canned insects, and complete gel or powder diets. While these products have improved significantly over the years, they should be viewed as supplements to a live-insect diet rather than replacements. Leopard geckos are hardwired to respond to movement, and many individuals simply will not recognize a freeze-dried cricket as food.

Freeze-dried insects retain much of their nutritional content and can be useful as emergency backup food or for travel situations where live insects are impractical. However, they lack the moisture content of live prey and do not provide the same enrichment benefits. Some keepers have success rehydrating freeze-dried insects and offering them with feeding tongs, wiggling them to simulate movement, but this approach is hit-or-miss depending on the individual gecko's temperament.

Canned insects are another option that preserves more of the natural texture and moisture than freeze-drying. They are pre-cooked and shelf-stable, making them convenient for occasional use. The downside is that they still require tong-feeding in most cases and lack the gut-loading advantage of live feeders. A canned cricket has whatever nutritional profile it had at the time of processing, with no opportunity to enhance it before feeding.

Powder and gel meal-replacement products designed for frugivorous gecko species like crested geckos are not appropriate for leopard geckos. These formulations are plant-based and fruit-based, which does not align with the leopard gecko's insectivorous biology. Despite occasional anecdotal reports of leopard geckos accepting these products, they do not provide adequate nutrition and should not be used as a dietary component.

Foods to Avoid

Certain insects and foods pose genuine risks to leopard geckos and should never be offered. Wild-caught insects are at the top of the list — bugs collected from gardens, parks, or fields may carry pesticide residues, parasites, or diseases that can be fatal. Even in areas where pesticide use seems unlikely, the risk is not worth the savings compared to purchasing farm-raised feeders from reputable suppliers.

Fireflies and lightning bugs are extremely toxic to leopard geckos and many other reptile species. The lucibufagins they produce as a defensive chemical are lethal even in very small quantities. A single firefly can kill an adult leopard gecko. This danger extends to any bioluminescent insect and is worth emphasizing because fireflies are common and might seem like a harmless treat to an uninformed keeper.

Large or hard-shelled insects should be avoided for smaller or juvenile geckos. Superworms, for instance, have strong mandibles and a tough exoskeleton that can be difficult for young geckos to handle. Even for adults, superworms should be offered carefully — some keepers crush the head before offering to prevent the worm from biting the gecko's digestive tract. Beetles of any kind, including the adult stage of mealworms and superworms, have exoskeletons that are too tough to digest safely.

Fruits, vegetables, and any plant-based food items are inappropriate for leopard geckos regardless of how they are prepared. Their digestive systems lack the enzymes and gut flora needed to break down plant cellulose. Offering salad, fruit, or baby food can cause digestive distress, diarrhea, and nutritional imbalances. If a gecko shows interest in licking fruit, it is likely attracted to the moisture or sugar rather than the food itself, and water or a properly hydrated feeder insect is a far better option.

Feeding Schedule & Routine

Establishing a consistent feeding schedule is one of the simplest ways to maintain your leopard gecko's health and monitor for early signs of illness. Leopard geckos are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk, so feeding in the early evening aligns with their natural rhythms and typically produces the most enthusiastic feeding response.

Juvenile leopard geckos under six months old should be fed daily, offering as many appropriately sized insects as they will eat in a 10 to 15 minute window. This heavy feeding schedule supports their rapid growth phase. Between six and twelve months, feeding can be reduced to every other day. Once fully grown, most leopard geckos thrive on two to three feedings per week, with each session consisting of six to ten insects depending on the insect type and the gecko's size.

Tracking food intake is a valuable habit that helps keepers catch health problems early. A leopard gecko that suddenly refuses food or eats significantly less than usual may be entering a shed cycle, experiencing stress from environmental changes, or developing an illness. Seasonal appetite changes are also normal — many leopard geckos eat less during winter months even when enclosure temperatures are maintained, reflecting an innate response to shorter daylight hours.

Uneaten insects should be removed from the enclosure after each feeding session. Crickets left overnight can stress and even bite a sleeping gecko, causing skin injuries that are vulnerable to infection. Mealworms placed in an escape-proof dish are less of a concern, but they will eventually burrow into loose substrate if given the opportunity. Keeping the enclosure clean after feeding also helps prevent bacterial growth and makes it easier to monitor fecal output, which is another important health indicator.
