Indian stick insects are arboreal creatures that spend the majority of their time clinging to vertical surfaces and hanging from foliage. This means that the height of the enclosure is far more important than its footprint. A general rule is that the enclosure should be at least three times the length of the largest insect in every direction, which for adult females translates to a minimum height of roughly 12 inches. However, taller enclosures are always preferable and make maintenance significantly easier.

For a small colony of three to five adults, an enclosure measuring approximately 12 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 18 inches tall is a comfortable starting point. As colonies grow — and Indian stick insects reproduce prolifically through parthenogenesis — you will likely need to upgrade to a larger enclosure or divide the colony into multiple containers. Overcrowding leads to stress, incomplete molts, and competition for the best feeding positions on the foliage.

Vertical space is critical because stick insects molt while hanging upside down, using gravity to help them shed their old exoskeleton. If the enclosure is too short, the insect may not have enough room to fully extend during the molt, resulting in deformities or a fatal incomplete shed. Providing ample overhead clearance above the highest perching point is one of the simplest ways to improve molt success rates.

When planning your enclosure, also consider access. A front-opening or top-opening design makes it much easier to replace foliage, clean the substrate, and retrieve insects for handling without disturbing the entire colony. Enclosures that only open from the top can be awkward to work with once you add tall branches and food containers.

Enclosure Types

The most common enclosure options for Indian stick insects are mesh cages, glass terrariums, and repurposed plastic or acrylic containers. Each type has trade-offs in terms of ventilation, humidity retention, visibility, and cost. The best choice depends on your local climate, the size of your colony, and your priorities as a keeper.

Mesh cages offer excellent ventilation and provide a textured surface that stick insects can grip easily for climbing and molting. They are lightweight, affordable, and come in a range of sizes suitable for small to large colonies. The main drawback is humidity control — mesh enclosures lose moisture rapidly, which means you may need to mist more frequently or partially cover the mesh to maintain adequate humidity levels.

Glass terrariums retain humidity much more effectively and offer superior visibility for observation. They are heavier and more expensive than mesh alternatives, but their stability and appearance make them a popular choice for keepers who want a more polished setup. The key consideration with glass is ventilation. A fully sealed glass tank will trap too much moisture and promote mold growth, so look for designs with mesh lids or built-in ventilation panels.

Plastic and acrylic containers — including large food storage bins and custom-built acrylic boxes — are an economical and highly customizable option. With a few ventilation holes drilled into the sides or lid, a tall plastic container can make an effective stick insect enclosure at a fraction of the cost of a commercial terrarium. The main concern is ensuring enough airflow to prevent condensation buildup while still maintaining humidity within the target range.

Substrate & Flooring

Substrate choice for Indian stick insects serves two practical purposes: absorbing moisture from misting to help maintain humidity, and making cleanup easier. Because these insects spend almost no time on the floor of the enclosure, the substrate does not need to be elaborate. Simple options are generally the most effective.

Paper towels or kitchen roll are the most practical substrate for beginners and experienced keepers alike. They are cheap, easy to replace, and make it simple to spot-clean droppings — called frass — which accumulate on the enclosure floor. For keepers who are breeding stick insects, paper towels also make it easier to find and collect eggs, which are small, dark, and seed-like.

Coconut fiber, also known as coco coir, is a popular natural substrate that holds moisture well and creates a more naturalistic appearance. It is particularly useful in enclosures where maintaining humidity is a challenge, as the damp coir slowly releases moisture into the air. However, it can be more difficult to find eggs in coco coir, and the substrate needs to be replaced regularly to prevent mold or bacterial growth.

Avoid substrates that are dusty, aromatic, or chemically treated. Cedar shavings, pine shavings, and scented bedding products release volatile compounds that can irritate or harm invertebrates. Sand and gravel are unnecessary and make cleaning more cumbersome without offering any benefit to the insects. Whatever substrate you choose, plan on replacing or refreshing it at least once a week to maintain a clean, healthy environment.

Ventilation & Humidity Control

Balancing ventilation and humidity is the central challenge of Indian stick insect housing. These insects need a relative humidity of approximately 60 to 75 percent to stay hydrated and molt successfully, but stagnant, overly humid air promotes mold growth on both the substrate and the food plants. The goal is gentle, consistent airflow that allows fresh air to circulate without drying out the enclosure too quickly.

Mesh-topped enclosures naturally provide strong ventilation but can struggle to hold humidity, especially in dry indoor environments or during winter when heating systems reduce ambient moisture. Partially covering the mesh top with a sheet of plastic or glass — leaving a portion open for airflow — is a common and effective compromise. This approach lets you fine-tune humidity by adjusting how much of the top is covered.

Daily misting with a spray bottle is the standard method for maintaining humidity. Use dechlorinated or distilled water, and spray the foliage and enclosure walls lightly rather than saturating the substrate. The insects will drink water droplets from the leaves, so misting serves both hydration and humidity purposes. In particularly dry environments, misting twice a day — morning and evening — may be necessary.

A simple analog or digital hygrometer mounted inside or near the enclosure takes the guesswork out of humidity management. Monitoring actual humidity levels rather than relying on visual cues helps you catch problems early, whether the environment is drying out or becoming dangerously damp. Consistent monitoring is especially important during seasonal transitions when indoor climate conditions can shift dramatically.

Temperature & Lighting

Indian stick insects thrive at room temperature, generally between 65 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 25 degrees Celsius). This is one of the reasons they are such accessible pets — in most homes, no supplemental heating is required. However, if your home drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit regularly, a low-wattage heat mat placed on one side of the enclosure can provide a gentle thermal gradient without overheating the interior.

Avoid placing the enclosure in direct sunlight. While a small amount of ambient light is fine and helps regulate the insects' day-night cycle, direct sun can rapidly overheat a glass or plastic enclosure, creating lethal temperatures within minutes. Similarly, positioning the enclosure near radiators, heating vents, or heat-producing electronics can cause localized hot spots.

Lighting requirements for Indian stick insects are minimal. They are nocturnal and will spend daylight hours resting motionless on branches or the enclosure walls. Ambient room lighting is sufficient to maintain a natural photoperiod. If you want to illuminate the enclosure for display purposes, use a low-intensity LED light on a timer set to match the natural day-night cycle in your region.

Temperature stability matters more than hitting an exact number. Sudden temperature swings — such as those caused by opening a window in winter or running an air conditioner that cycles on and off — can stress stick insects and disrupt their feeding and molting cycles. Choose a location in your home where the temperature remains relatively constant throughout the day and night.

Colony Management & Scaling

One of the defining characteristics of keeping Indian stick insects is their reproductive output. Females produce eggs without mating through parthenogenesis, and a single adult female can drop hundreds of eggs over her lifetime. Without active management, a small starter colony can balloon into a population that overwhelms its enclosure within a few months.

The first line of management is egg collection. Regularly inspecting the substrate for eggs and removing them gives you control over how many nymphs hatch. Eggs can be stored in a small, ventilated container with a slightly damp substrate and will hatch in approximately three to five months at room temperature. If you do not want additional nymphs, eggs can be frozen and discarded humanely.

As your colony grows, you may need to split it across multiple enclosures. Keeping the population density manageable ensures that all insects have access to fresh food, adequate molting space, and sufficient ventilation. A rough guideline is no more than ten to fifteen adults per standard-sized enclosure, though this depends on the specific dimensions and food supply.

Planning for colony growth should begin before you acquire your first insects. Having a second enclosure on hand, identifying local schools or pet groups that might welcome surplus insects, and establishing a routine for egg management will prevent the situation from becoming unmanageable. Indian stick insects are one of the most commonly surrendered invertebrate pets precisely because keepers underestimate how quickly colonies expand.
