A fine-mist spray bottle produces a gentle, even fog of water droplets rather than heavy streams that saturate one spot and leave others dry. Look for bottles with an adjustable nozzle that allows you to switch between a fine mist and a more directed spray. The fine mist setting is ideal for daily humidity maintenance, while the directed spray is useful for targeting dry spots or rinsing leaf surfaces.

For keepers managing multiple enclosures or large colonies, a pump-action pressure sprayer saves significant time and effort. These sprayers build up pressure with a few pumps and then deliver a consistent mist without the repetitive squeezing that small trigger bottles require. They are particularly useful for keepers with five or more enclosures who need to mist efficiently as part of a daily routine.

Always fill your spray bottle with dechlorinated or distilled water. Chlorine and chloramine, commonly found in municipal tap water, can be harmful to invertebrates over time. Letting tap water sit in an open container for 24 hours allows chlorine to dissipate, though this method does not remove chloramine. If your water supply uses chloramine, a water conditioner designed for aquarium use will neutralize it effectively.

Hygrometers & Thermometers

Monitoring temperature and humidity is essential for maintaining a healthy stick insect environment, and a combined hygrometer-thermometer unit is one of the most practical investments you can make. These small devices attach to the inside of the enclosure wall and provide continuous readings that take the guesswork out of environmental management.

Digital units are generally more accurate and easier to read than analog dial hygrometers, which can drift out of calibration over time. Many digital models include a memory function that records the highest and lowest readings over a set period, which is particularly useful for identifying overnight temperature drops or humidity fluctuations that you might not notice during the day.

Placement matters. Position the hygrometer at roughly the mid-height of the enclosure, away from the misting zone and not directly above the substrate. A reading taken right after misting or from the dampest part of the enclosure will give an artificially high humidity figure, while a reading from the driest corner will understate the actual conditions most of the enclosure experiences.

Keeping cut foliage fresh inside the enclosure requires small water containers that hold the stems upright while preventing insects — especially nymphs — from falling in and drowning. This is a more significant concern than many new keepers realize. Nymphs are tiny, lightweight, and can easily slip through gaps into water containers that are perfectly safe for adults.

The simplest solution is a narrow-necked jar or bottle stuffed with cotton wool, sponge, or tissue around the stems. The packing material fills the gap between the stems and the container opening, blocking access to the water while still allowing the stems to absorb moisture. Small medicine bottles, test tubes, and narrow-necked vases all work well for this purpose.

Some keepers use floral foam or water tubes — the small plastic vials with rubber caps that florists use to keep individual stems hydrated. These tubes seal tightly around each stem and eliminate the drowning risk entirely. They are reusable, inexpensive, and particularly useful when you are offering multiple plant species and want to keep the stems separated.

Whatever container system you use, change the water every two to three days to prevent bacterial buildup and algal growth. Stagnant water in the enclosure contributes to odor, attracts fungus gnats, and can contaminate the foliage. A quick rinse and refill during your regular maintenance routine is all it takes to keep the water fresh and the food supply in good condition.

Cleaning & Maintenance Tools

Regular cleaning is a non-negotiable part of stick insect keeping, and having the right tools on hand makes the process faster and less disruptive to the colony. A basic maintenance kit for Indian stick insects is simple and inexpensive to assemble.

A soft-bristled paintbrush is the most versatile cleaning tool in the stick insect keeper's arsenal. It is gentle enough to sweep frass from smooth surfaces without scratching, and it can be used to carefully nudge insects away from areas you need to clean. For removing frass from substrate, a small scoop or spoon works well, especially if you are using paper towels that need to be lifted and replaced.

Long-handled tweezers or forceps are useful for removing shed exoskeletons, dead foliage, and other debris from hard-to-reach areas of the enclosure. They are also helpful for positioning branches, adjusting decor, and picking up eggs from the substrate without disturbing the insects. Choose tweezers with rounded or flat tips rather than pointed ones to reduce the risk of accidentally injuring an insect.

For deep cleaning — which should be done every few weeks — remove the insects to a temporary holding container, strip the enclosure of all decor and substrate, and wash the interior with plain warm water. Avoid using soap, detergent, or chemical cleaners, as residues can be toxic to invertebrates. A clean sponge or cloth and warm water is sufficient for removing buildup. Allow the enclosure to dry completely before reassembling and returning the insects.

Egg Incubation Supplies

Managing the egg output of an Indian stick insect colony is a routine part of keeping these insects, and having proper incubation supplies on hand gives you control over the process. Female Indian stick insects drop eggs continuously throughout their adult lives, scattering them on the substrate, on branches, and even flicking them away from the enclosure entirely.

A small, ventilated container is all you need for basic egg incubation. Plastic food containers with a few pin-sized holes in the lid work well. Line the bottom with a thin layer of slightly damp vermiculite, perlite, or coconut fiber to maintain humidity around the eggs. The substrate should be moist but not wet — if you squeeze a handful and water drips out, it is too damp.

Eggs should be placed on top of the substrate rather than buried, as Indian stick insect eggs do not require burial and may rot if covered with damp material. Check the incubation container weekly to ensure the substrate has not dried out completely, and add a few drops of water as needed to maintain light moisture. At room temperature, eggs typically hatch in three to five months, though the timeline can vary depending on temperature and humidity.

Keepers who want to prevent hatching altogether can freeze collected eggs before discarding them. This is the most humane method of population control and is far preferable to allowing eggs to hatch into nymphs that you cannot house or rehome. If you do intend to raise nymphs, prepare a small, appropriately furnished rearing enclosure before the eggs are due to hatch so that the nymphs have immediate access to food and a safe environment.

Transport & Handling Accessories

Whether you are moving insects between enclosures, transporting them to a school for an educational presentation, or rehoming surplus colony members, having appropriate transport accessories is important. Stick insects are fragile, and even a short journey can be stressful or injurious without the right container.

Small, ventilated plastic containers with secure lids are the standard transport option. Punch or drill a few small air holes in the lid, and line the bottom with a damp paper towel to maintain humidity during transit. Place a small branch or piece of foliage inside for the insects to cling to, as stick insects are much calmer and less likely to be jostled when they have something to grip.

For longer journeys, insulating the container inside a small cooler bag or cardboard box helps buffer temperature fluctuations. Extreme cold and extreme heat are both dangerous during transport. In winter, a hand warmer wrapped in a cloth and placed near — but not touching — the container provides gentle warmth. In summer, keep the container out of direct sunlight and avoid leaving it in a parked car.

Handling tools like soft paintbrushes and flexible plastic strips can help guide insects into transport containers without direct hand contact, which reduces the risk of dropped or escaped insects. For regular handling during daily care, clean hands free of lotions, fragrances, and sanitizer residue are the only requirement. Indian stick insects are docile and tolerate handling well, but they should always be encouraged to walk onto the hand rather than being picked up or pulled from surfaces.
