Indian stick insects (Carausius morosus) are strict herbivores that feed exclusively on fresh plant leaves. Unlike many other invertebrate pets, they do not require commercially prepared diets, protein supplements, or fruit. Their entire nutritional intake comes from the foliage they consume, which means the quality and species of plant you offer is the single most important factor in their health.

The cornerstone of their diet is bramble, also known as blackberry leaves. Bramble is available year-round in most temperate climates, stays fresh for several days when kept in water, and provides a robust nutritional profile that meets nearly all of the insect's needs. Privet and ivy are also commonly accepted and can serve as reliable alternatives or supplements to a bramble-based diet.

Because Indian stick insects derive moisture primarily from the leaves they eat and from ambient humidity, dehydration is a subtle but real risk. Leaves that have wilted or dried out lose much of their water content and nutritional value. Keeping cut stems in small jars of water inside the enclosure helps maintain leaf freshness and ensures the insects always have access to hydrated food.

Nymphs have the same dietary preferences as adults but are more vulnerable to tough, mature foliage. Young leaves and tender shoots are easier for nymphs to chew and digest. When starting a new colony or raising freshly hatched nymphs, it is worth selecting the softest, youngest growth available to reduce the risk of starvation during those critical early molts.

What to Look For

When sourcing foliage for Indian stick insects, freshness is the primary criterion. Leaves should be vibrant green, free of spots, mildew, or fungal growth, and pliable rather than brittle. If you are collecting from outdoor sources, ensure the plants have not been treated with pesticides, herbicides, or any chemical sprays. Even trace residues can be lethal to stick insects, so foraging from roadsides, treated gardens, or commercial landscaping is not recommended.

Organic sources are ideal. If you purchase cut foliage from a florist or garden center, confirm that no systemic pesticides were used during cultivation. Systemic treatments are absorbed into the plant tissue and cannot be washed off, making them invisible but deadly to leaf-feeding invertebrates.

Variety, while not strictly necessary, can be beneficial. Offering two or three accepted plant species allows the insects to self-select based on nutritional need and palatability. Some keepers rotate between bramble, privet, and rose leaves depending on seasonal availability, which also reduces the risk of a supply disruption if one plant species becomes temporarily unavailable.

Storage matters as well. Cut stems should be placed in water immediately and kept cool until they are introduced into the enclosure. Leaves stored in sealed plastic bags in a refrigerator can last several days, but should be brought to room temperature before feeding to avoid thermal shock to the insects.

Primary Foliage Options

Bramble is the gold standard for Indian stick insect diets and the food source most keepers rely on year-round. The plant grows aggressively in hedgerows, woodland edges, and even urban waste ground across much of Europe and North America, making it both free and abundant. Its leaves are nutritionally complete for Carausius morosus and are eagerly consumed at every life stage.

Privet is the most popular alternative and is especially useful during winter months when bramble may be less accessible. Both wild and ornamental varieties are accepted, though you should confirm the specific cultivar has not been chemically treated. Privet holds up well in water and tends to stay fresh slightly longer than bramble cuttings.

Ivy is another reliable option, though it should be offered as a supplement rather than a sole food source. Some keepers report that certain ivy varieties are less readily accepted, so it is worth testing acceptance before relying on ivy as a primary food. Hawthorn, oak, and rose leaves are also consumed by Indian stick insects and can fill gaps in supply, though they may not be eaten as enthusiastically as bramble.

For keepers who live in regions where none of these plants grow naturally, it is possible to cultivate bramble or privet in containers. A small potted bramble plant on a windowsill can provide a continuous supply of fresh leaves, particularly useful for maintaining a small colony through the winter months.

Supplements & Water

Indian stick insects do not require mineral supplements, vitamin powders, or calcium dusting under normal circumstances. Their nutritional needs are met entirely by fresh foliage, and adding commercial supplements is generally unnecessary and may even be harmful if the powder interferes with their ability to grip leaves or irritates their spiracles.

Water is provided indirectly through two channels: the moisture content of fresh leaves and the humidity of the enclosure. Most keepers lightly mist the enclosure once daily with dechlorinated or distilled water, which serves the dual purpose of maintaining humidity and providing water droplets that the insects can drink directly from leaf surfaces. This misting routine is a critical part of the feeding strategy, even though it is not food in the traditional sense.

If you notice that your stick insects are clustering near the bottom of the enclosure or appear lethargic, insufficient moisture is often the cause. Increasing the misting frequency or ensuring that the enclosure retains humidity more effectively is usually the first corrective step. Overly dry environments lead to dehydration and failed molts, both of which can be fatal.

The only scenario in which supplementation might be considered is if you are keeping a very large colony and cannot source a variety of fresh plant species. In such cases, some advanced keepers experiment with very lightly misting leaves with a dilute honey-water solution to provide trace sugars, but this practice is not widely endorsed and carries a risk of mold growth if overdone.

Foods to Avoid

While Indian stick insects are relatively forgiving feeders, several categories of plant material should never be offered. Any foliage from plants in the nightshade family — including tomato, potato, and pepper leaves — is potentially toxic and should be strictly avoided. Similarly, eucalyptus, oleander, and rhododendron are known to be harmful to a wide range of invertebrates and should never enter the enclosure.

Fruit, vegetables, and commercially prepared insect diets are not appropriate for Indian stick insects. These insects have evolved to process leaf tissue specifically, and their digestive systems are not equipped to handle sugary fruits, starchy vegetables, or protein-heavy insect foods. Offering these items may cause digestive problems and will likely be ignored entirely.

Conifers, including pine, spruce, and cedar, should also be avoided. The resinous compounds in conifer needles are irritating and potentially toxic to stick insects. Even dried conifer material used as substrate can off-gas enough volatile compounds to cause problems in a poorly ventilated enclosure.

Perhaps the most dangerous food-related risk is pesticide contamination. Never collect foliage from areas that may have been sprayed, including public parks, golf courses, agricultural field margins, and residential gardens where chemical treatments are used. If you are uncertain about the safety of a plant source, it is always better to find an alternative than to risk exposing your colony to chemical residues.

Feeding Schedule

Indian stick insects are nocturnal feeders, doing most of their eating during the night. A practical feeding schedule involves replacing foliage every two to three days, or whenever the leaves begin to show signs of wilting or drying. In warm environments or during summer months, leaves may dry out faster and require more frequent replacement.

Rather than removing all old foliage at once, many keepers practice a rotation system. Fresh cuttings are added alongside existing stems, and the older stems are removed only once they are clearly depleted or dried. This approach minimizes disturbance to the insects, which may be resting on the old foliage during the day, and ensures there is always something edible available.

For nymphs, daily checks are advisable. Young stick insects are small enough that they can become trapped in water containers or struggle to reach food that is positioned too high in the enclosure. Keeping fresh, soft leaves accessible at the level where nymphs tend to rest reduces the risk of starvation during the first few weeks of life.

Colony size directly affects how quickly food is consumed. A large colony of several dozen adults can strip a generous bundle of bramble in a single night, while a pair of adults may take a week to work through the same amount. Monitoring consumption patterns helps you calibrate the quantity and frequency of food replacement without waste or shortage.

Seasonal Considerations

One of the practical challenges of keeping Indian stick insects is maintaining a reliable foliage supply through the winter months. In temperate climates, bramble is technically evergreen, but winter growth is tougher, less nutritious, and harder to find in quantity. Planning ahead by identifying reliable foraging spots or cultivating container-grown plants can prevent a mid-winter food crisis.

Privet is semi-evergreen and often retains its leaves well into winter, making it an excellent cold-weather backup. Some keepers maintain a dedicated privet hedge or a few potted privet plants specifically for this purpose. Rose leaves, where available from indoor or greenhouse plants, can also bridge seasonal gaps.

If you live in a climate where all suitable foliage dies back completely in winter, consider growing bramble indoors under supplemental lighting. A single grow light over a container of bramble can produce enough fresh growth to sustain a small colony throughout the coldest months. The investment is minimal compared to the cost and risk of trying to source foliage from unreliable winter sources.

During spring and summer, the opposite problem sometimes arises — an overabundance of foliage. This is the ideal time to experiment with different plant species to determine which ones your colony prefers, and to establish backup foraging locations in case your primary source becomes unavailable due to land clearing, chemical treatment, or other disruptions.
