Most adult Quarter Horses in light to moderate work do well on quality forage supplemented with a modest concentrate ration, but the specifics change depending on age, workload, and whether the horse is a growing youngster, a broodmare, or a retired pasture companion.

Because the breed is naturally easy-keeping, overfeeding concentrates is one of the most common nutritional mistakes owners make. Quarter Horses are genetically predisposed to conditions like insulin resistance and equine metabolic syndrome, so calorie-dense feeds should be measured carefully and adjusted as activity levels change. A horse that competes in reining or barrel racing every weekend has very different energy demands from one that trails rides twice a month.

Protein requirements hover around ten to twelve percent of the total diet for most adult Quarter Horses at maintenance, rising to fourteen percent or more for lactating mares and rapidly growing foals. What to Look For in Feed

When evaluating commercial feeds for a Quarter Horse, start with the guaranteed analysis panel. Total digestible energy, crude protein, crude fat, and crude fiber percentages tell you whether a feed is designed for maintenance, performance, or growth. A maintenance feed typically supplies around 1.0 megacalories per pound, while a performance formula may push 1.4 megacalories or higher. Match the feed's energy density to your horse's actual workload, not the workload you aspire to.

Ingredient lists matter. Feeds that lead with whole grains or processed grain byproducts deliver energy primarily through starch, which can be problematic for metabolically sensitive Quarter Horses. Feeds built around beet pulp, soy hulls, and stabilized rice bran provide energy through digestible fiber and fat instead of starch — a safer profile for easy keepers and horses prone to laminitis or tying-up episodes.

Pelleted feeds offer consistency from bag to bag because every pellet contains the same ratio of ingredients. Textured or sweet feeds let you visually inspect the grain components but tend to include molasses for palatability, which raises sugar content. For Quarter Horses with metabolic concerns, a low-starch pellet or extruded feed is usually the more prudent choice.

Always check for a manufacturing date or lot code. Feed that has been stored improperly or sat on the shelf too long can lose vitamin potency, develop mold, or go rancid. Buy from retailers that move inventory quickly, and store opened bags in sealed bins away from moisture and rodents.

Forage Selection

Forage should form the foundation of every Quarter Horse's diet — a minimum of one and a half to two percent of body weight per day in hay or pasture. For a 1,100-pound horse, that means roughly seventeen to twenty-two pounds of forage daily. Good-quality grass hay is the default choice for most Quarter Horses at maintenance or light work, providing adequate fiber and moderate calories without the protein and energy surplus of alfalfa.

Alfalfa hay is not off the table, but it should be used strategically. Blending alfalfa with grass hay can boost protein and calcium for growing horses, lactating mares, or hard-working performance horses without creating a pure-alfalfa diet that delivers excess calories and protein. A fifty-fifty mix is a common starting point, adjusted based on body condition and bloodwork.

Hay quality varies enormously by cutting, region, and storage. Request a forage analysis from your supplier or send a core sample to an equine nutrition lab. The analysis will reveal digestible energy, protein, sugar, starch, and mineral content — information that allows you to balance the rest of the diet precisely rather than guessing. Hay with combined sugar and starch levels above twelve percent may be too rich for metabolically sensitive Quarter Horses.

Pasture management plays a role as well. Lush spring and fall grasses can spike in non-structural carbohydrates, increasing the risk of laminitis. Grazing muzzles, timed turnout, and strip grazing are practical tools for controlling intake without eliminating the mental and digestive benefits of pasture access.

Wet Feed & Mashes

Soaked feeds and bran mashes have a long tradition in horse care, and they still serve practical purposes. Adding water to pelleted feed creates a soft mash that encourages hydration, eases chewing for older horses with dental issues, and slows consumption for horses that bolt their grain. During cold weather, a warm mash can help maintain water intake when horses may be reluctant to drink cold water from troughs.

Commercial complete feeds designed to be soaked expand into a high-moisture meal that replaces both hay and concentrate for horses with severe dental problems or chronic choke risk. These products are formulated to deliver full nutrition at the recommended feeding rate, so owners should follow label directions rather than treating them as a supplement to an existing hay ration.

Beet pulp shreds or pellets are another excellent soaked-feed option. They absorb several times their weight in water, deliver digestible fiber energy without excessive starch, and serve as a versatile carrier for supplements, medications, or electrolytes. Always soak beet pulp thoroughly before feeding — while the risk of expansion-related choke is sometimes overstated, proper soaking improves digestibility and palatability.

Avoid the old practice of feeding large volumes of wheat bran mash as a weekly laxative. Wheat bran is high in phosphorus and low in calcium, and intermittent feeding does not truly regulate gut motility. If hydration or gut health is a concern, consistent daily use of soaked feeds, psyllium protocols, or electrolyte supplementation is more effective and nutritionally sound.

Treats & Supplements

Treats are a useful training tool and a way to bond with your Quarter Horse, but they should be given in moderation. Carrots, apple slices, and commercial low-sugar horse treats are generally safe options. Avoid treats that are high in sugar, molasses, or artificial ingredients, and always break larger items into manageable pieces to reduce choking risk.

Joint supplements are among the most widely used products for Quarter Horses, particularly those involved in reining, cutting, and barrel racing — disciplines that place significant stress on hocks, stifles, and fetlocks. Look for supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, or methylsulfonylmethane. While research on oral joint supplements is mixed, many owners and veterinarians report subjective improvements in comfort and mobility.

Hoof supplements are another common addition, especially for Quarter Horses with thin soles or slow hoof growth. Biotin at a dose of twenty milligrams per day or more has the strongest research backing for improving hoof quality, though results typically take six to nine months to become visible in new hoof growth. Supplements that combine biotin with zinc, methionine, and copper may offer additional support.

Electrolyte supplements are essential for Quarter Horses in heavy work or hot climates. Sweat losses can be substantial during summer competition or training, and plain salt blocks may not replace sodium, chloride, and potassium fast enough. A quality electrolyte product administered in feed or water — not one loaded with sugar and flavoring — can help maintain hydration and prevent metabolic fatigue. Always ensure fresh water is available alongside electrolyte supplementation.

Foods to Avoid

Certain feeds and forage types pose genuine health risks to Quarter Horses. Clover hay contaminated with slaframine-producing mold can cause excessive salivation and digestive upset. Fescue hay infected with endophyte fungus is especially dangerous for pregnant mares, as it can cause prolonged gestation, thickened placentas, and agalactia. If you feed fescue, confirm it is an endophyte-free variety or have it tested.

Lawn clippings should never be fed to horses. They ferment rapidly, can be contaminated with herbicides or fertilizers, and pile into dense masses that are swallowed without adequate chewing — a recipe for colic or choke. Similarly, garden scraps from the nightshade family (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers) and ornamental plants like oleander, red maple leaves, and yew are toxic and potentially fatal.

Feeds designed for other livestock are another hazard. Cattle feeds frequently contain ionophores such as monensin, which is lethal to horses even in small amounts. Pig and poultry feeds may contain additives and medication levels inappropriate for equines. Store horse feed separately from other livestock rations and clearly label all containers.

High-starch diets deserve caution even when the individual ingredients are not toxic. Excessive grain feeding can overwhelm the small intestine's starch-digesting capacity, sending undigested starch into the hindgut where it disrupts the microbial population, lowers pH, and can trigger laminitis or colic. Any grain meal should be kept under five pounds per feeding for an average-sized Quarter Horse, and total daily starch intake should be monitored carefully for metabolically challenged individuals.

Feeding Schedule

Horses are trickle feeders by nature, designed to consume small amounts of forage almost continuously throughout the day. Mimicking this pattern as closely as possible reduces the risk of gastric ulcers, stereotypic behaviors like cribbing, and hindgut disturbances. At minimum, divide the daily hay ration into two feedings — morning and evening — though three or four smaller hay meals are preferable if your management setup allows it.

Concentrate meals should also be split into at least two feedings per day. A Quarter Horse receiving six pounds of grain daily should get three pounds in the morning and three in the evening rather than one large meal. Smaller, more frequent grain meals improve starch digestion in the small intestine and maintain more stable blood glucose and insulin levels — particularly important for metabolically sensitive horses.

Slow-feed hay nets are a practical tool for extending forage consumption time. A net with small openings forces the horse to pull hay out in small mouthfuls, turning a thirty-minute pile of loose hay into two or three hours of steady eating. This not only mimics natural grazing behavior but also reduces hay waste from trampling and soiling.

Timing around exercise matters. Avoid feeding a large grain meal within an hour before or after strenuous work. A horse's digestive tract competes with working muscles for blood flow, and a full stomach can restrict diaphragm movement during intense effort. Offer hay freely before and after exercise, but hold concentrate meals until the horse has cooled down and its respiratory rate has returned to normal.

Finally, any dietary changes should be introduced gradually over seven to fourteen days. Abrupt switches in hay type, grain formulation, or feeding volume can disrupt hindgut fermentation and cause colic or loose stool. Transition slowly by blending old and new feeds in increasing proportions until the switch is complete.
