A stall for a Percheron should measure at least 14 by 14 feet, though many experienced draft horse owners recommend 16 by 16 feet or larger for the biggest individuals. A horse that cannot comfortably lie down, roll, and stand back up in its stall is at increased risk for stress, stiffness, and reluctance to rest properly — all of which affect long-term soundness.

Ceiling height is a detail that is frequently underestimated when converting existing barns for draft horse use. Percherons can stand well over six feet at the withers, and when they raise their heads, the total reach can exceed eight feet. For Percherons, the sheer volume of bedding required to adequately cushion a stall is substantially more than for a lighter horse — plan for six to eight inches of depth over stall mats, or deeper if mats are not installed.

Straw bedding is traditional for draft horses and offers excellent cushioning when banked deeply. However, straw is less absorbent than shavings and must be managed more actively to prevent wet spots from developing beneath the surface. Wheat straw is generally preferred over oat straw because horses are more likely to eat oat straw, which can contribute to excessive caloric intake and increase the risk of impaction colic if consumed in large quantities.

Pelleted bedding products expand when moistened and offer superior absorbency in a compact form. They are particularly useful in situations where bedding storage space is limited or where manure management is a concern, as pelleted bedding breaks down more quickly in compost than traditional shavings. The initial cost per bag is higher, but the reduced volume needed per stall and the extended interval between full strip-outs can make pelleted bedding cost-competitive over time.

Outdoor footing in paddocks and turnout areas matters just as much as indoor bedding. Mud is the primary enemy of draft horse hoof health, contributing to thrush, scratches, and the fungal skin conditions that Percherons are particularly susceptible to around their feathered lower legs. High-traffic areas around gates, water troughs, and feeding stations benefit from a base of crushed stone topped with a layer of sand or pea gravel to maintain drainage and prevent the deep mud that forms when heavy horses repeatedly churn wet ground.

Run-In Sheds & Field Shelters

Run-in sheds provide a practical alternative to full stabling for Percherons that live primarily on pasture. These open-front structures allow horses to seek shelter from rain, wind, and sun on their own terms, which aligns well with the draft horse's generally hardy constitution and preference for outdoor living. A run-in shed for one or two Percherons should offer at least 200 square feet of covered space per horse, with a roof height of at least twelve feet at the front opening.

Orientation matters when positioning a field shelter. The open side should face away from the prevailing wind direction, which in most North American climates means facing south or southeast. This placement provides protection from cold north winds in winter while allowing sunlight to reach into the shelter during the shorter days. In areas with significant snowfall, the roof pitch should be steep enough to shed snow effectively, and overhangs should extend far enough to prevent rain from blowing into the shelter.

Portable shelters and modular shed kits offer flexibility for operations where pasture rotation is part of the management plan. These structures can be relocated as horses move between paddocks, ensuring that shelter is always available where it is needed. When evaluating portable options, pay close attention to the structural ratings and wind load specifications — a shelter designed for standard livestock may not be robust enough for the environment created by a group of Percherons leaning against the walls or using the posts as scratching surfaces.

Flooring in run-in sheds should prioritize drainage above all else. A base of compacted crushed stone topped with a few inches of pea gravel creates a surface that drains quickly, resists compaction from heavy hooves, and can be refreshed periodically by adding new material on top. Bare earth floors inevitably become muddy during wet seasons, and the constant moisture exposure is particularly problematic for Percherons with heavy feathering on their lower legs.

Climate Considerations

Percherons are a cold-hardy breed with origins in the Perche region of France, where winters are damp and cool. Their dense coat and substantial body mass give them excellent natural insulation, and most healthy adult Percherons handle cold weather well without supplemental heating or blanketing. In fact, overheating is often a greater concern than cold stress for draft breeds, particularly during transitional seasons when winter coats have not yet shed and daytime temperatures climb.

In hot and humid climates, management strategies should focus on providing shade, airflow, and access to cool water. Fans mounted in barn aisles and stalls help move air across the horse's body and accelerate evaporative cooling. Misting systems can further reduce ambient temperature in covered areas, though they must be managed carefully in humid environments where adding moisture to already saturated air provides diminishing returns. Scheduling heavy work for early morning or evening hours and providing electrolyte supplementation during periods of sustained heat helps prevent heat-related illness.

Winter housing decisions should account for the horse's natural thermoregulation abilities. A dry, windproof shelter with good bedding is generally all a Percheron needs to stay comfortable through severe cold. Blanketing is rarely necessary for unclipped horses and can actually be counterproductive, as a blanket that compresses the coat reduces its insulating value. Clipped horses or those with health conditions that compromise thermoregulation may need a properly fitted turnout blanket, but the default for a healthy Percheron in winter is to let the natural coat do its job.

Mud management becomes a housing priority in regions with wet seasons. Percherons are especially vulnerable to pastern dermatitis — commonly called scratches or mud fever — because the dense feathering on their lower legs traps moisture against the skin. Keeping high-traffic areas well-drained, providing dry standing areas in paddocks, and maintaining clean bedding in stalls are the most effective strategies for preventing these skin conditions.

Multi-Horse Facilities

Housing multiple Percherons together requires thoughtful planning around social dynamics, feeding management, and infrastructure durability. Draft horses are generally sociable animals that do well in group turnout, but hierarchy-related aggression during feeding can become a problem if space is limited or feed access points are insufficient. Providing multiple hay stations spaced well apart — at least 30 to 40 feet between them — allows subordinate horses to eat without being chased away by more dominant herd members.

Barn layouts for multi-draft-horse operations benefit from wide aisles, which serve both as safe working corridors and as practical necessities when leading large horses past occupied stalls. An aisle width of at least 12 feet allows two Percherons to pass each other comfortably with handlers alongside. Cross-ties should be set wide enough to accommodate the draft horse's broader body, and the hardware should be rated for loads well above what would be standard for lighter breeds.

When housing Percherons alongside smaller horses or other livestock, size-appropriate infrastructure prevents accidents. Gates and doorways should allow the largest animal to pass through safely, while fencing and stall partitions should be strong enough to withstand the forces generated by draft-sized horses. Shared water troughs need to be positioned and mounted at a height accessible to all animals in the group, and the trough itself should be heavy or anchored enough that a Percheron cannot tip it over.

Manure management scales dramatically with multiple draft horses. A single Percheron can produce 50 to 60 pounds of manure per day, and a small group of four or five horses generates waste at a rate that demands a deliberate composting or removal plan. Stall cleaning frequency, manure storage capacity, and disposal logistics should all be planned before the horses arrive rather than addressed reactively after the facility is overwhelmed.
