The primary behavioral drive in ghost shrimp is foraging. In the wild, these animals spend the vast majority of their time picking through substrate, grazing on biofilm-covered surfaces, and scavenging organic matter. An enriched captive environment replicates this by providing diverse textures, multiple food sources distributed across the tank, and surfaces that support biofilm colonization. When a ghost shrimp is constantly busy exploring and feeding, it is exhibiting signs of a well-enriched habitat.

Social interaction is another important behavioral component. Ghost shrimp establish loose social hierarchies and engage in subtle displays involving antenna positioning and body orientation. Floating plants add an enrichment dimension that rooted plants cannot. Ghost shrimp are gregarious animals that derive enrichment from the presence of conspecifics. A colony of appropriate size creates a naturally stimulating social environment where individuals interact, compete mildly for food, and engage in the antenna-touching communication displays that characterize shrimp social behavior. The minimum recommended group size is six, but colonies of fifteen to twenty individuals in an appropriately sized tank exhibit the most dynamic and observable social behaviors.

Breeding activity itself is a form of enrichment that energizes the entire colony. When a female molts and releases pheromones signaling reproductive readiness, male shrimp become visibly more active, swimming through the water column in what hobbyists call the mating dance. This burst of activity engages the entire colony and is one of the most fascinating behaviors to observe. Many of the most effective ghost shrimp enrichment strategies cost little or nothing to implement. Collecting dried leaves from pesticide-free trees like Indian almond, oak, or beech provides months of foraging enrichment material for the price of a short walk. These leaves can be rinsed, dried, and stored in bulk, then added to the tank a few at a time as needed. The decomposition process creates a continuously renewing source of biofilm and microfauna.

DIY moss walls made from plastic craft mesh and fishing line offer a cost-effective way to create extensive climbing and grazing surfaces. A small portion of java moss purchased once can be divided and attached to multiple mesh panels that are then secured to the tank walls with suction cups. Within a few weeks the moss fills in, and the shrimp gain a large enrichment surface that grows and regenerates indefinitely with no further investment.
