Supplemental tests for general hardness and carbonate hardness are equally important for shrimp, as these minerals directly affect molting success. For shrimp tanks, a siphon with a narrow tube or an adjustable flow rate is essential because standard-width siphons can easily suck up juvenile shrimp and even adults during cleaning.

Some keepers attach a fine mesh bag or a piece of pantyhose over the outflow end of the siphon to catch any shrimp that accidentally get pulled through. This simple precaution has saved countless shrimplets from being dumped down the drain. Purpose-built shrimp-safe siphons with built-in strainers are also available and eliminate this risk by design, though they may require more frequent cleaning of the strainer during use.

Algae scrapers and brushes are needed to maintain glass clarity and manage algae growth on tank surfaces. Magnetic algae cleaners are convenient because they allow cleaning the inside glass without getting hands wet, but care must be taken not to crush shrimp that may be resting on the glass surface. A quick visual check of the cleaning path before each pass prevents accidents. Soft-pad magnetic cleaners are gentler on glass coatings and less likely to trap shrimp than rigid blade-style cleaners.

Long-handled tweezers, scissors, and feeding tongs designed for aquarium use round out the essential maintenance toolkit. Tweezers are invaluable for planting and repositioning plants, removing dead plant leaves, and placing food precisely where desired. Curved-tip tweezers offer better reach and visibility in planted tanks. Catching and transferring ghost shrimp requires finer, gentler nets than those used for fish. Once matured, these substrates create an excellent foundation for a planted shrimp tank. Inert substrates like pool filter sand or natural river gravel do not affect water chemistry, making them a simpler choice for keepers who prefer to control parameters through other means.

Mineralized decorative elements like cuttlebone pieces, mineral stones, and crushed coral bags serve double duty as both hardscape accessories and water chemistry tools. A mesh bag of crushed coral placed in the filter or tucked behind decorations slowly dissolves calcium carbonate into the water, maintaining the mineral levels ghost shrimp need for healthy molting. Air pumps serve multiple functions in ghost shrimp tanks beyond simply adding oxygen to the water. They power sponge filters, drive air stones that increase surface agitation, and can operate decorative elements that add visual interest while improving gas exchange. A reliable, quiet air pump sized appropriately for the tank volume is a core accessory for most shrimp setups.

Noise level is an important selection criterion because air pumps run continuously and many models produce a distracting hum or vibration. Pumps with rubber feet, internal dampening chambers, or diaphragm-based designs tend to be quieter than piston-driven models. Placing the pump on a soft surface or hanging it from a hook rather than setting it directly on a hard shelf further reduces vibration noise. If the primary filter fails overnight, a pre-seasoned sponge filter that has been running in the tank or stored in tank water can be deployed immediately to maintain biological filtration. In regions prone to storms or unreliable electrical service, this single accessory can mean the difference between losing a colony and riding out the outage with minimal stress. Keepers should test battery pumps periodically and keep fresh batteries stored alongside the unit.
