Ghost shrimp are small invertebrates, but they still require adequate space to exhibit natural behaviors, establish a social hierarchy, and maintain stable water parameters. A minimum tank size of five gallons is recommended for a starter colony of ten to fifteen shrimp. While ghost shrimp can technically survive in smaller containers, the water volume in anything under five gallons fluctuates too rapidly in temperature, pH, and dissolved waste to support consistent health.

Larger tanks are always preferable when space and budget allow. A ten-gallon aquarium provides a much more forgiving environment, with greater water stability and more room for the biofilm, plant growth, and hiding spots that ghost shrimp depend on. Colonies housed in larger volumes tend to breed more successfully, experience fewer molting failures, and tolerate minor lapses in maintenance without catastrophic consequences.

Floor space matters more than height for ghost shrimp. These animals spend nearly all their time on or near the substrate, grazing on surfaces, exploring decorations, and retreating into cover. A long, shallow tank with a generous footprint offers more usable territory than a tall, narrow one with the same volume. When choosing between tank shapes, prioritize those that maximize horizontal area.

Stocking density should be monitored as colonies grow, especially in breeding setups where populations can expand quickly. A general guideline is two to three ghost shrimp per gallon in a well-filtered, well-planted tank. Overcrowding leads to increased competition for food and hiding spots, elevated waste production, and stress that can trigger disease or aggression among normally peaceful animals.

Tank Selection & Setup

Glass aquariums remain the most popular choice for ghost shrimp housing due to their clarity, scratch resistance, and long-term durability. Standard rectangular glass tanks in the five to twenty gallon range are widely available, affordable, and compatible with most filtration and lighting systems. For shrimp-only setups, rimless glass tanks offer a clean aesthetic and easy access for maintenance, though they tend to cost more than traditional framed designs.

Acrylic tanks are a viable alternative that weighs less and offers superior insulation compared to glass, which can help stabilize temperature in rooms with significant fluctuations. However, acrylic scratches more easily and can become cloudy over time without careful cleaning. For keepers who plan to move or reposition their tank frequently, acrylic's lighter weight is a meaningful advantage.

The substrate is a critical component of the housing setup and directly impacts water chemistry and shrimp behavior. Fine-grained gravel or sand in a neutral color provides a natural substrate that ghost shrimp can forage through comfortably. Active substrates designed for planted tanks can also work well, as they buffer water parameters and support the growth of live plants that contribute to the overall ecosystem. Avoid sharp or coarse substrates that could injure the shrimp's delicate legs and antennae.

Positioning the tank away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and high-traffic areas helps maintain stable conditions. Ghost shrimp are sensitive to rapid temperature swings and vibrations, both of which cause stress. A sturdy, level stand rated for the weight of a filled aquarium is essential, as even a slight tilt can create uneven stress on the glass seams over time.

Filtration & Water Flow

Filtration is non-negotiable for any ghost shrimp enclosure, but the type of filter matters enormously. The single most important consideration is intake safety. Standard hang-on-back filters and canister filters have intake tubes with enough suction to trap and kill adult ghost shrimp, and they are almost guaranteed to pull in juveniles and shrimplets. Every filter intake in a ghost shrimp tank must be covered with a fine sponge pre-filter or a stainless steel mesh guard to prevent casualties.

Sponge filters are widely regarded as the ideal filtration method for dedicated shrimp tanks. They provide gentle biological filtration, create minimal water flow, and double as a grazing surface where biofilm accumulates for the shrimp to feed on. Air-driven sponge filters are inexpensive, virtually silent, and pose zero risk to shrimp of any size. For tanks up to twenty gallons, a single appropriately sized sponge filter handles the bioload of a shrimp colony effectively.

For larger setups or community tanks, hang-on-back filters with sponge-covered intakes offer stronger mechanical filtration while remaining shrimp-safe. Canister filters provide the highest filtration capacity but require careful intake protection and produce stronger currents that may need to be diffused with a spray bar or flow reducer. Ghost shrimp are not strong swimmers and can become exhausted in high-flow environments.

Water flow should be gentle and distributed rather than concentrated in a single stream. Ghost shrimp prefer calm water with just enough circulation to prevent dead zones where waste accumulates. Adjustable flow filters or spray bars that spread the output across the tank surface are ideal. If the shrimp are constantly being pushed around by the current or clustering in low-flow corners, the flow rate is too high and should be reduced.

Hiding Spots & Decor

Ghost shrimp are prey animals in the wild, and their instinct to seek cover is deeply ingrained. A tank without adequate hiding spots will house stressed, inactive shrimp that spend most of their time frozen against the substrate or tucked behind equipment. Providing abundant cover is one of the simplest ways to encourage natural behavior, reduce stress, and support successful molting.

Live plants are the gold standard for ghost shrimp cover. Dense, fine-leaved plants like java moss, flame moss, and subwassertang create a three-dimensional maze of hiding places that shrimp navigate with ease. Floating plants like water lettuce and frogbit add surface cover that reduces light intensity and gives shrimp a sense of security from above. A heavily planted tank also supports biofilm growth and provides supplemental food sources, making plants a multifunctional addition.

Driftwood and natural stone provide structural hiding spots and contribute to the tank's aesthetic. Pieces of cholla wood are particularly popular in shrimp tanks because their hollow, porous structure creates perfect tunnels and caves for shrimp to retreat into. Malaysian driftwood and spider wood offer branching shapes with numerous nooks. When using natural hardscape, ensure the materials are aquarium-safe and have been properly cleaned or cured to avoid leaching harmful substances.

Ceramic and terracotta shelters designed for aquarium use offer durable, easy-to-clean hiding options. Small ceramic tubes, stacked terracotta pots, and purpose-built shrimp caves all work well. These are especially useful in tanks with minimal planting or as supplemental cover in larger setups. The key is providing multiple hiding options distributed throughout the tank so that every shrimp, regardless of its position in the social order, has access to cover.

Heating & Temperature Control

Ghost shrimp are comfortable in a temperature range of roughly sixty-five to eighty degrees Fahrenheit, making them more tolerant of temperature variation than many tropical fish species. In homes that maintain a consistent room temperature within this range, a heater may not be necessary at all. However, in rooms with significant daily temperature swings or during winter months in cooler climates, a low-wattage aquarium heater provides valuable stability.

Adjustable submersible heaters in the twenty-five to fifty watt range are appropriate for most ghost shrimp tanks. Preset heaters locked to seventy-eight degrees are common in the hobby but may keep the water warmer than ghost shrimp prefer, especially for keepers who want to maintain temperatures in the low seventies. An adjustable model allows fine-tuning to the preferred temperature for the specific setup.

A reliable thermometer is an essential companion to any heating system. Digital thermometers with external probes or adhesive LCD strip thermometers placed on the outside of the glass both work well. Checking the temperature daily takes only a moment and can catch heater malfunctions before they cause harm. Heater failures that cause the water to overheat are one of the most common causes of sudden mass die-offs in shrimp tanks.

For keepers in warm climates where summer temperatures push tank water above eighty degrees, cooling solutions become important. Small clip-on fans directed across the water surface promote evaporative cooling and can lower the temperature by several degrees. In extreme cases, a dedicated aquarium chiller may be necessary, though this is uncommon for ghost shrimp unless the tank is in an un-air-conditioned space during prolonged heat waves.

Lighting & Tank Placement

Ghost shrimp do not have specific lighting requirements of their own, but the plants and biofilm they depend on do benefit from a consistent light cycle. A basic LED aquarium light on a timer providing eight to ten hours of moderate light per day supports plant growth and maintains a natural day-night rhythm without encouraging excessive algae blooms. Ghost shrimp are most active during dimmer periods, so observing them during dawn and dusk transitions or under moonlight settings can reveal behaviors rarely seen under full illumination.

Light intensity should be matched to the plant species in the tank. Low-light plants like java fern, anubias, and java moss thrive under modest LED fixtures and are the easiest to maintain alongside ghost shrimp. Higher-light setups that support carpeting plants or demanding stem plants require more powerful fixtures and often more intensive fertilization and carbon dioxide supplementation, which adds complexity that may not benefit a shrimp-focused tank.

Tank placement within the room affects lighting conditions significantly. Positioning the aquarium away from windows prevents uncontrolled sunlight exposure that can cause temperature spikes and explosive algae growth. A location with consistent ambient light and stable room temperature is ideal. The tank should also be placed where it can be easily observed and accessed for maintenance without requiring the keeper to move furniture or navigate obstacles.

Timers for lighting are a small investment that pay for themselves in convenience and consistency. Ghost shrimp, like most aquatic animals, respond positively to predictable light cycles that mimic natural conditions. Irregular lighting schedules caused by manually switching lights on and off at different times can stress the colony and disrupt the biological rhythms of both the shrimp and the beneficial microorganisms that sustain the tank ecosystem.
