Ghost Shrimp integrate well into peaceful community aquariums containing small to moderately sized fish species that are unlikely to view the shrimp as prey. Suitable fish companions include small tetras, rasboras, livebearers such as guppies and endlers, Corydoras catfish, Otocinclus catfish, and small peaceful barb species. Other invertebrates including Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp, Mystery Snails, and Nerite Snails coexist without conflict, creating diverse invertebrate communities where each species occupies a slightly different ecological niche within the tank.

Fish species to avoid housing with Ghost Shrimp include any predatory or semi-predatory species with a mouth large enough to consume them. Cichlids of all but the smallest dwarf species, bettas, gouramis, larger barbs, loaches, and pufferfish will systematically hunt Ghost Shrimp. Even moderately sized community fish such as angelfish and larger tetras may opportunistically capture and consume adult Ghost Shrimp. The shrimp's transparency provides some camouflage advantage, but determined predators learn to detect the subtle visual cues that betray a Ghost Shrimp's position.

A particular compatibility note concerns the distinction between true Ghost Shrimp (Palaemonetes species) and the superficially similar Macrobrachium prawns occasionally mixed into Ghost Shrimp shipments. Macrobrachium species grow substantially larger, possess much more powerful chelae, and display overtly predatory behavior toward fish, dwarf shrimp, and snails. A single misidentified Macrobrachium introduced as a Ghost Shrimp can devastate a community tank's invertebrate population. Inspecting new arrivals carefully for disproportionately large claws, aggressive posturing, and body size exceeding two inches helps identify these impostors before introduction.

Breeding Ghost Shrimp in captivity is straightforward to initiate but challenging to complete successfully due to the species' larval reproductive strategy. Unlike dwarf shrimp that produce miniature replicas of adults, Ghost Shrimp females release planktonic larvae (zoea) that are microscopic, free-swimming, and require specific conditions and food sources to develop through multiple larval stages before metamorphosing into juvenile shrimp. This larval phase is the critical bottleneck that makes Ghost Shrimp breeding substantially more difficult than breeding direct-developing species like Cherry Shrimp.

Females carry clutches of 20 to 50 greenish eggs attached to their pleopods for approximately two to three weeks before releasing the larvae. In community tanks, virtually all larvae are consumed by filter intakes or tank mates within hours of release. Successful rearing requires transferring the berried female to a dedicated larval rearing container with gentle air-driven sponge filtration, maintaining stable warm temperatures around 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and providing microscopic food sources including infusoria, liquid fry food, and green water algae suspensions. Larvae pass through several developmental stages over two to four weeks before settling into benthic juvenile form. The technical demands of larval rearing explain why Ghost Shrimp remain predominantly wild-collected rather than commercially bred, despite their popularity and low retail price.
