Enrichment for Cherry Shrimp looks nothing like enrichment for mammals or even for fish. Shrimp do not play, solve puzzles in the conventional sense, or seek out novelty the way a dog or parrot would. Their behavioral repertoire revolves almost entirely around foraging, exploring surfaces for food, seeking shelter, and social interaction within the colony. Effective enrichment for shrimp means creating conditions that encourage these natural behaviors to unfold fully rather than being suppressed by a barren or monotonous environment.

A bare tank with a sponge filter and nothing else will sustain Cherry Shrimp biologically, but the colony will behave very differently from one in a richly textured environment. Shrimp in sparse tanks tend to cluster in one spot, remain hidden for long periods, and show less active grazing. Shrimp in complex environments spread across every surface, forage continuously, and display more confident behavior — swimming openly, investigating new objects, and interacting with each other.

The concept of enrichment in shrimp keeping is therefore less about introducing toys and more about habitat design. Every piece of hardscape, every plant, every leaf and moss pad is an enrichment item because it provides a surface to explore and food to discover. Marimo moss balls — actually a species of algae rather than true moss — are a popular and low-maintenance enrichment item. Cherry Shrimp will sit on and around marimos, picking at their surface. They also roll slightly with water currents, which can attract shrimp attention. Marimo balls are nearly indestructible, tolerate low light, and last for years with minimal care. Gently squeezing and rolling them during water changes keeps their shape and prevents dead zones inside.

Subwassertang, a rare liverwort sometimes called freshwater seaweed, creates a tangled, kelp-like mass that shrimp love to inhabit. It grows slowly, thrives in low light, and provides both cover and grazing surfaces. While less commonly available than java moss, it is worth seeking out for dedicated shrimp tanks. It floats freely or can be loosely wedged into hardscape, and its irregular growth pattern creates the kind of natural complexity that encourages exploratory behavior.

Leaf Litter & Botanicals

Dried leaf litter is an enrichment staple in the shrimp-keeping hobby, and for good reason. Leaves placed in the tank slowly decompose, developing a biofilm coating that shrimp graze on continuously. The process takes weeks, providing long-duration enrichment that requires no intervention from the keeper. Indian almond leaves are the most popular choice, but mulberry leaves, guava leaves, and oak leaves are all suitable alternatives.

Beyond biofilm, decomposing leaves create a naturalistic environment that mimics the shallow streams and pools Cherry Shrimp ancestors inhabited. A layer of leaf litter on the substrate gives the tank a forest-floor aesthetic and provides cover for juvenile shrimp. The key consideration with any botanical is ensuring it has not been treated with pesticides, herbicides, or preservatives. Collect leaves and pods from known-safe sources well away from roadsides, agricultural fields, or treated lawns. Commercially sold aquarium botanicals are typically pre-cleaned and dried, but it is still good practice to give them a brief boil or hot water rinse before adding them to a shrimp tank. This also helps them sink faster.

A small glass or ceramic dish placed on the substrate gives the keeper a designated spot to place food, making it easy to monitor consumption and remove uneaten portions. For shrimp, the dish becomes a predictable food source that they learn to visit, and watching a colony swarm a feeding dish is one of the more entertaining aspects of shrimp keeping.

Some feeding dishes are designed with ramps or textured surfaces that allow shrimp to climb in and out easily. Flat-bottomed dishes with low sides work best — shrimp can see and smell food from a distance but may struggle to climb into deep or smooth-walled containers. A simple unglazed terracotta saucer is an inexpensive and effective option that also develops biofilm on its surface over time.

Mineral stones and cholla wood pieces can be used as targeted enrichment stations. A mineral stone placed in a visible area attracts shrimp that rasp on its surface for calcium and trace minerals, while a cholla wood tube creates a shrimp highway that the colony navigates through repeatedly. Rotating the placement of these items every few weeks introduces mild environmental novelty that encourages exploration.

Scatter feeding — distributing small amounts of food across multiple locations rather than in one spot — is another form of feeding enrichment that encourages active foraging. Sprinkling powdered food across the substrate, dropping small food pieces near different hardscape elements, and placing vegetable slices in varying locations from week to week all prevent the colony from becoming sedentary around a single feeding point.

DIY & Budget Enrichment

Many of the most effective shrimp enrichment items cost nothing at all. Collecting dried leaves from untreated trees in your yard — oak, beech, maple, or magnolia — provides a free and renewable supply of leaf litter. Boil the leaves for five to ten minutes to eliminate pathogens and help them sink, then add them to the tank. The shrimp will begin grazing on them within hours as biofilm develops.

Small terracotta pots from garden centers cost very little and make excellent shrimp shelters and enrichment structures. Break a pot into pieces to create caves and overhangs, or leave one intact and lay it on its side as a tunnel. Terracotta is porous, unglazed, and aquarium-safe, and it develops a biofilm coating quickly. Stacking pot fragments at different angles creates a layered structure with multiple access points that shrimp navigate enthusiastically.

Homemade feeding sticks can be made by blanching a piece of vegetable — zucchini, carrot, or sweet potato — and skewering it on a stainless steel plant weight or aquarium-safe clip. Shrimp climb the stick to reach the food, creating vertical foraging activity that is both enriching for the shrimp and visually entertaining. Rotate the vegetable type weekly for variety.

Stainless steel mesh rolled into loose tubes or bent into shapes provides a scaffold for moss attachment and shrimp exploration.
