Catching Cherry Shrimp requires more finesse than catching fish. Shrimp are small, fast, and can launch themselves backward with a powerful tail flick that sends them out of a standard aquarium net in an instant. Fine-mesh shrimp nets with soft, tightly woven fabric are essential — the mesh must be fine enough that shrimp legs and antennae cannot snag or poke through. Standard fish nets with coarse mesh will injure or entangle shrimp and should never be used.

Shrimp traps are a less stressful alternative to netting, particularly when you need to catch specific individuals from a large colony. These small acrylic or glass containers have a narrow entrance that shrimp can enter but have difficulty exiting. Baiting the trap with a piece of food and leaving it in the tank for an hour or two attracts shrimp without the frantic chasing that comes with netting. Traps are especially useful for removing berried females for separate breeding tanks or for catching shrimp during a full tank breakdown.

A long pipette or turkey baster is an underrated catching tool for juvenile shrimp. Baby Cherry Shrimp are barely visible to the naked eye, and trying to net them is nearly impossible without damaging them. Gently sucking them up with a wide-bore pipette along with a small amount of water is the safest transfer method. Many keepers keep a dedicated large pipette near their shrimp tanks for quick, gentle transfers.

When catching shrimp for any purpose — sale, trade, or relocation — minimize air exposure. Shrimp gills can dry out quickly, and even brief exposure can cause stress. Move them in water whenever possible, and when transferring between containers, pour rather than lift. A small cup or ladle dedicated to shrimp handling is gentler than any net for short-distance moves within the same room.

Water Testing & Conditioning

A reliable liquid test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH, and KH is the most important accessory a shrimp keeper owns. Strip tests are convenient but lack the precision needed for invertebrate care, where small parameter shifts can trigger molting failures or colony stress. Liquid reagent kits produce color results that are easier to read accurately and are more consistent between tests.

Water conditioner is a mandatory supply for any tank that uses municipal tap water. Chlorine and chloramine — standard disinfectants in city water — are rapidly lethal to Cherry Shrimp even in trace amounts. A quality dechlorinator that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine should be dosed into every batch of replacement water before it contacts the tank. Some conditioners also bind heavy metals, which provides an additional layer of safety in areas with older plumbing.

Remineralizer products are essential for keepers who use reverse osmosis, distilled, or very soft tap water. Cherry Shrimp need dissolved minerals — particularly calcium and magnesium — for exoskeleton development and overall health. Remineralizers designed for Neocaridina species raise GH to the appropriate range without significantly affecting KH or pH. They typically come as a powder that is dissolved in replacement water before adding it to the tank.

A TDS meter — total dissolved solids — is a compact, affordable tool that gives an instant snapshot of mineral content. While it does not replace a full test kit, it provides a quick check that parameters are in the expected range. Most Cherry Shrimp keepers target a TDS reading between 150 and 300 ppm. Significant deviations from the established baseline warrant a full parameter test to identify what has changed.

Maintenance Tools

Gravel vacuums designed for nano tanks are sized appropriately for the small tanks Cherry Shrimp typically inhabit. Standard-sized siphons move water too quickly and create suction that can trap or injure shrimp. Look for narrow-diameter siphons with fine mesh guards on the intake — these allow debris to be removed while preventing shrimp, shrimplets, and snails from being sucked out. Some nano siphons include a squeeze-bulb start mechanism that eliminates the need to suck on the tubing.

Algae scrapers and magnetic cleaners keep glass surfaces clear without disturbing the tank interior. Floating magnet cleaners designed for nano tanks are small enough to maneuver in tight spaces and gentle enough to avoid crushing shrimp that may be grazing on the glass near the cleaning path. Always check the glass surface for shrimp before running a magnetic cleaner — a shrimp caught between the magnets will not survive.

Long tweezers and planting tools are useful for precise work inside the tank — repositioning hardscape, planting stem plants, removing dead plant leaves, or retrieving uneaten food. Stainless steel aquascaping tool sets are widely available and typically include tweezers, scissors, and a spatula. These tools minimize the need to put hands in the tank, which reduces the introduction of oils, soaps, and contaminants from skin.

A dedicated bucket and set of hoses used exclusively for aquarium maintenance prevents cross-contamination from household cleaning products. Even trace residues of soap, detergent, or surface cleaners can be lethal in a small shrimp tank. Label the bucket clearly and store it separately from household cleaning supplies. This is a simple precaution that prevents one of the most common and avoidable causes of sudden colony loss.

Breeding & Colony Management Supplies

Breeding boxes and isolation containers allow keepers to separate berried females, cull specific color grades, or quarantine new arrivals without setting up an entirely separate tank. Hang-on breeding boxes that sit inside or on the rim of the main tank share the same water, eliminating the need to match parameters. Choose models with fine mesh or perforated walls rather than solid plastic — water circulation through the box is critical for oxygen and waste removal.

A magnifying glass or jeweler's loupe is surprisingly useful for shrimp keeping. Examining individual shrimp up close allows you to assess color grade, check for parasites like scutariella or vorticella, and confirm whether a female is carrying eggs. Inspecting molts under magnification can reveal signs of mineral deficiency or disease that are invisible to the naked eye. A small handheld magnifier kept near the tank makes routine health checks quick and informative.

Shipping and transport supplies become relevant once a colony grows beyond what a single tank can support. Insulated shipping boxes, heat or cold packs, breather bags, and kordon bags are all standard supplies for safely transporting live shrimp. Breather bags allow gas exchange through the bag material, eliminating the need for inflated air pockets and reducing sloshing stress during transit. If you plan to sell, trade, or give away shrimp, investing in proper shipping materials prevents losses and builds a reputation for quality.

Record-keeping supplies — whether a simple notebook or a digital spreadsheet — help track colony development over time. Recording water parameters, feeding schedules, molt observations, and population estimates creates a reference that makes troubleshooting much easier when something goes wrong. Keepers who track their data consistently are better at identifying patterns, predicting breeding cycles, and maintaining stable conditions across seasons.

Drip Acclimation Equipment

Drip acclimation is the safest method for introducing new Cherry Shrimp to a tank, and the equipment required is minimal but important. A length of standard airline tubing, a control valve or knot to regulate flow, and a small container to hold the shrimp during acclimation are all that is needed. The goal is to slowly mix tank water into the shipping water over one to two hours, allowing the shrimp to adjust to the new parameters without shock.

Drip acclimation kits are commercially available and typically include pre-cut tubing with an adjustable valve and a clip or suction cup to secure the tubing to the tank rim. These kits are convenient but not essential — a length of airline tubing tied in a loose knot to control flow works just as well. The flow rate should be roughly two to three drops per second, gradually doubling or tripling the volume of water in the acclimation container.

The acclimation container itself should be clean, chemical-free, and large enough that shrimp are not crowded during the process. A small plastic tub, a clean deli container, or even a clean measuring cup will work. Avoid containers that have ever held food, soap, or chemicals. Some keepers designate a specific container for shrimp acclimation only and store it with their aquarium supplies.

Temperature matching is just as important as chemical acclimation. If the shipping water and tank water differ by more than a few degrees, float the sealed shipping bag in the tank for 15 to 20 minutes before beginning the drip process. This equalizes temperature without mixing the water. Once the drip acclimation is complete, use a net or pipette to transfer the shrimp into the tank — do not pour the acclimation water into the tank, as it may contain ammonia from the shipping process.

Safety & Preventive Accessories

Tank lids and covers are a frequently overlooked accessory for Cherry Shrimp tanks. While shrimp are not jumpers in the way that some fish species are, they do climb — and a shrimp that climbs above the waterline on a heater cord, filter intake, or along the tank rim can end up outside the tank. Glass lids, acrylic covers, or fine mesh screens prevent escapes and also reduce evaporation, which helps maintain stable water levels and parameters between water changes.

Intake guards for filters, powerheads, and any equipment with suction are critical safety accessories. Even sponge filters can develop tears or gaps over time that allow juvenile shrimp inside. Stainless steel mesh guards, fine sponge prefilters, and nylon stocking covers all serve as additional barriers. Inspect these guards regularly — biofilm buildup can reduce water flow through the guard, and small shrimp can sometimes find gaps that develop as sponge material degrades.

A battery-powered air pump is an important safety net for power outages. Cherry Shrimp in planted tanks rely on filter-driven water circulation for oxygenation, and a prolonged outage — especially in warm weather — can deplete dissolved oxygen to dangerous levels within hours. A battery backup air pump with an airstone provides emergency aeration that can keep a colony alive through an extended blackout. Some models activate automatically when they detect a loss of power.

Thermometer accuracy should not be taken for granted. Stick-on liquid crystal thermometers are popular but notoriously imprecise, often reading two or more degrees off. A digital thermometer with a submersible probe gives accurate, real-time readings and alerts the keeper to heater malfunctions or ambient temperature swings before they become lethal. In a hobby where a few degrees can make the difference between a thriving colony and a mass die-off, accurate temperature monitoring is a basic safety requirement.
