Tank Size & Shape

Cherry Shrimp can survive in remarkably small volumes of water, but a minimum of five gallons is strongly recommended for a starter colony. Smaller containers — sometimes marketed as desktop shrimp tanks — lack the water volume needed to buffer against parameter swings. Temperature, pH, and ammonia can shift dangerously fast in two or three gallons of water, and those swings are the leading cause of sudden colony loss in new setups.

Ten-gallon tanks represent the sweet spot for most keepers. They provide enough volume for stable water chemistry, sufficient footprint for a diverse hardscape, and room for a colony to grow into the hundreds without crowding. The additional water volume also makes maintenance more forgiving — a missed water change or a slight overfeeding is far less likely to trigger a crisis in ten gallons than in five.

Tank shape matters more for shrimp than many keepers realize. Cherry Shrimp are bottom-dwelling grazers that spend the majority of their time on substrates, hardscape surfaces, and plant leaves in the lower half of the tank. A long, shallow tank with a large footprint provides more usable grazing area than a tall, narrow tank of the same volume. Rimless, low-profile tanks have become popular in the shrimp-keeping community precisely because they maximize the horizontal space shrimp actually use.

For keepers planning a breeding colony, starting larger is always more cost-effective than upgrading later. A 20-gallon long tank can comfortably house a colony of several hundred shrimp, requires less frequent maintenance, and provides enough space to incorporate complex hardscapes that give juveniles hiding spots away from any tank mates.

Substrate & Soil

Substrate choice has a direct impact on water chemistry, and in Cherry Shrimp tanks, this relationship is particularly important. Active substrates — also called buffering soils — are designed to lower pH and soften water by absorbing minerals. While these substrates are essential for Caridina species that require acidic conditions, Cherry Shrimp are Neocaridina and actually prefer neutral to slightly alkaline water with moderate hardness. An active soil can push parameters below their comfort zone.

Inert substrates like natural gravel, sand, or crusite do not alter water chemistry and are generally the better choice for Cherry Shrimp. Fine gravel in the one-to-three-millimeter range provides a surface that shrimp can easily navigate and graze on without trapping excessive debris. Rounded grains are preferable to sharp or angular substrates, which can damage the delicate appendages shrimp use for feeding.

Dark substrates bring out the best coloration in Cherry Shrimp. Against a light or white substrate, shrimp often appear pale and washed out because they attempt to blend with their surroundings — a natural camouflage response. A black or dark brown substrate encourages deeper red pigmentation and makes the colony visually striking. This is purely an aesthetic consideration, but it is one that most keepers appreciate.

Substrate depth should be kept to one to two inches in a shrimp-only tank. Deeper substrates can develop anaerobic pockets that produce hydrogen sulfide — a toxic gas — especially in tanks with low flow. If live plants are part of the setup, a nutrient-rich root layer capped with inert gravel provides the best of both worlds: plant nutrition beneath and a shrimp-safe grazing surface on top.

Filtration

Sponge filters are the gold standard for Cherry Shrimp tanks. They provide gentle, consistent biological and mechanical filtration without creating suction strong enough to trap or injure juvenile shrimp. A mature sponge filter also doubles as a grazing surface — the biofilm that colonizes the sponge is a constant food source, and shrimp will often cluster on and around the filter picking at microorganisms.

When selecting a sponge filter, choose one rated for your tank size or slightly above. Dual-sponge models offer redundancy — if one sponge needs cleaning, the other retains its bacterial colony and continues filtering. Fine-pore sponges provide better mechanical filtration and prevent even the tiniest shrimplets from getting pulled into the sponge, but they also clog faster and require more frequent rinsing.

Hang-on-back filters and canister filters can be used in Cherry Shrimp tanks, but they require modification to be safe. The intake tube must be covered with a fine sponge prefilter or stainless steel mesh guard to prevent juvenile shrimp from being sucked into the impeller. Without this precaution, a hang-on-back filter will steadily consume baby shrimp, and the keeper may not realize why the colony is not growing.

Flow rate is another consideration. Cherry Shrimp do not come from fast-moving water and prefer gentle currents. Overly strong filtration can stress shrimp, make it difficult for them to feed, and blow lightweight food particles out of reach. If using a powered filter, look for models with adjustable flow controls or baffle the output with a spray bar or sponge to reduce current intensity.

Hardscape & Hiding Spots

Cherry Shrimp are prey animals with strong instincts to seek cover, and a tank without adequate hiding spots will produce a colony that spends most of its time concealed in corners or behind equipment. A well-designed hardscape with driftwood, rocks, and dense plant cover encourages natural behavior and makes shrimp feel secure enough to graze openly.

Driftwood is particularly valuable in shrimp tanks because it serves multiple functions simultaneously. It provides hiding surfaces with textured bark for grazing, slowly releases tannins that have mild antibacterial properties, and supports lush moss growth when used as a mounting surface. Spider wood, cholla wood, and manzanita are all popular choices. Cholla wood is especially useful because its hollow, porous structure creates a network of tiny tunnels that juvenile shrimp use as refuges.

Rocks and stones add visual structure and create crevices between them where shrimp shelter during and after molts. Freshly molted shrimp are soft and vulnerable, and they instinctively seek tight spaces where they can hide until their new exoskeleton hardens. Inert stones like lava rock, dragon stone, and seiryu stone are all suitable, though seiryu stone may gradually raise water hardness — which is actually beneficial in most Cherry Shrimp setups.

Ceramic shrimp shelters, tubes, and stacked hides are commercially available and designed specifically to provide structured cover. While natural hardscape is generally more attractive, these products are functional and particularly useful in bare-bottom breeding tanks where aesthetics are secondary to colony productivity. Whatever approach is chosen, the goal is to create layers of complexity — surfaces at different heights, gaps of varying sizes, and shaded areas that give shrimp options throughout the tank.

Lighting & Plants

Lighting in a Cherry Shrimp tank serves the plants more than the shrimp. Cherry Shrimp do not require any particular lighting regimen and are comfortable in moderate to low light. Excessively bright lighting without plant cover can actually stress shrimp by eliminating the shaded areas they prefer. A standard LED fixture designed for planted tanks, running eight to ten hours per day on a timer, is sufficient for both plant growth and shrimp comfort.

Live plants are not strictly necessary for Cherry Shrimp survival, but they dramatically improve tank stability and shrimp quality of life. Plants absorb nitrates, provide grazing surfaces, oxygenate the water, and create the kind of dense cover that makes shrimp feel secure. Java moss, Christmas moss, and flame moss are the most popular choices because they grow easily on hardscape, require no special care, and create thick mats that shelter juvenile shrimp.

Floating plants like salvinia, frogbit, and red root floaters serve a dual purpose: they absorb excess nutrients from the water column and diffuse overhead light, creating the dappled, shaded conditions Cherry Shrimp naturally prefer. A partial layer of floating plants can reduce algae problems by outcompeting algae for light and nutrients. Just be careful not to let floaters cover the entire surface, as this can reduce gas exchange and limit light to plants below.

Low-tech plants that do not require CO2 injection or intense fertilization are the safest bet for shrimp tanks. CO2 systems can cause pH swings between the injection period and the off period, and many liquid fertilizers contain copper or other metals that are harmful to invertebrates. Anubias, bucephalandra, java fern, and cryptocorynes are all excellent low-demand options that coexist safely with Cherry Shrimp.

Water Parameters & Maintenance

Cherry Shrimp are hardy by invertebrate standards, but they are far less tolerant of parameter instability than most tropical fish. The ideal range is a pH of 6.8 to 7.8, a GH (general hardness) of 6 to 12 dGH, a KH (carbonate hardness) of 2 to 8 dKH, and a temperature between 65 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Within these ranges, consistency matters more than hitting a specific number. A tank that holds steady at 7.2 pH is far healthier than one that swings between 6.8 and 7.6.

Water changes should be small and frequent rather than large and infrequent. A ten to fifteen percent change weekly is a common routine that removes accumulated nitrates without shocking the colony with a sudden parameter shift. Always match the replacement water's temperature and mineral content to the tank water as closely as possible. Many keepers pre-mix and age their water change water in a separate container to ensure consistency.

A heater may or may not be necessary depending on ambient room temperature. Cherry Shrimp do well at room temperature in most climates, and many experienced keepers run their tanks without heaters entirely. If a heater is used, choose a reliable model with a precise thermostat — a malfunctioning heater that overheats a small tank is one of the most common causes of mass shrimp death. Preset heaters locked to a single temperature are safer than adjustable models in shrimp tanks.

Test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH, and KH are essential equipment for any shrimp keeper. Liquid test kits are more accurate than test strips and are worth the modest additional investment. Test weekly during the first few months of a new tank, and continue testing at least biweekly once the tank is established. Any detectable ammonia or nitrite is cause for immediate action — Cherry Shrimp have zero tolerance for these compounds.
