In a well-established tank, much of their nutrition comes from grazing on the thin layer of biofilm that coats every surface — driftwood, rocks, plant leaves, and glass. This biofilm is rich in microorganisms, diatoms, and detritus, forming the backbone of their natural diet.

Because shrimp molt regularly as they grow, calcium and mineral intake is critical. Without adequate calcium, molts can fail — a potentially fatal event. Magnesium and iodine also play supporting roles in exoskeleton development, and a well-rounded diet should address all three. Protein is important for juveniles and breeding females but should be offered in moderation, as excess protein can foul the water.

Color intensity in Cherry Shrimp is partly genetic but also influenced by diet. Foods rich in natural carotenoids — astaxanthin and beta-carotene in particular — help intensify red pigmentation over time. A colony fed exclusively on one type of food will often appear washed out compared to one receiving a diverse rotation of plant-based, protein, and mineral-rich options.

Feeding frequency matters as much as food selection. Overfeeding is the single most common mistake among new shrimp keepers. Uneaten food decomposes rapidly, spiking ammonia and nitrite levels in what are typically small, low-flow tanks. A conservative approach — feeding small amounts every other day in addition to natural grazing — keeps water quality stable and shrimp healthy.

What to Look For

When evaluating shrimp foods, ingredient transparency is the first thing to check. Look for products that list specific ingredients rather than vague terms like "fish meal" or "plant extract." High-quality shrimp foods will name the protein source, the type of algae used, and the mineral supplements included. Whole ingredients like spirulina, kelp, mulberry leaf, and montmorillonite clay are positive indicators.

Particle size and sinking behavior are practical considerations that many keepers overlook. Shrimp are bottom feeders with tiny chelipeds, so foods need to sink quickly and break apart into manageable pieces. Floating pellets or large wafers that take hours to soften force shrimp to compete and crowd, increasing stress. Granules, powders, and thin wafers designed to fragment on contact with water are generally better choices.

Avoid products loaded with fillers, artificial colors, or preservatives. Wheat flour and soy meal are common cheap fillers that add bulk without meaningful nutrition. Artificial dyes serve no purpose for invertebrates and may introduce unwanted chemicals into sensitive shrimp tanks. Preservatives like ethoxyquin have raised concerns in the aquatics community, and many experienced keepers avoid them entirely.

Finally, consider whether the product is designed specifically for invertebrates or is a generic fish food being marketed to shrimp keepers. Invertebrate-specific formulas tend to have higher mineral content, appropriate copper levels — copper is toxic to shrimp in high concentrations — and a protein-to-plant ratio that suits crustacean metabolism.

Staple Prepared Foods

Prepared staple foods form the foundation of a supplemented diet alongside natural biofilm grazing. The most common formats are pellets, granules, and thin wafers, each offering slightly different feeding dynamics. Granules are ideal for small colonies because they disperse across the substrate, reducing competition and allowing juveniles to feed safely away from larger adults.

Look for staple foods built around a spirulina or kelp base with added calcium carbonate or montmorillonite clay. These formulations deliver the daily plant matter shrimp need while supporting exoskeleton health. A good staple should not cloud the water when added — excessive cloudiness indicates a high proportion of fine dust or binders that dissolve before shrimp can eat them.

Rotation is more effective than relying on a single staple. Alternating between two or three different prepared foods introduces variety in micronutrient profiles and keeps shrimp actively foraging. Many experienced keepers designate different days for different staple products, treating the feeding schedule as a weekly rotation rather than a single-product routine.

Natural & Supplemental Foods

Blanched vegetables are an inexpensive and effective supplement for Cherry Shrimp. Zucchini, spinach, cucumber, and kale can be lightly blanched to soften cell walls and then dropped into the tank. Shrimp will swarm these offerings, and the slow breakdown of vegetable matter also feeds biofilm growth on surrounding surfaces. Remove uneaten portions after 12 to 24 hours to prevent decomposition.

Dried leaves are a staple in many shrimp-keeping traditions, particularly Indian almond leaves and mulberry leaves. As they break down in water, they release tannins, humic acids, and develop a rich biofilm layer that shrimp graze on continuously. The tannins also have mild antifungal and antibacterial properties. Leaves can be left in the tank until they are reduced to skeletal veins — a process that takes several weeks and provides ongoing grazing opportunities.

Snowflake foods — typically made from processed soybean husks — are another popular supplemental option. They do not dissolve or cloud water the way many prepared foods do, and they develop a bacterial film as they sit, making them more nutritious over time rather than less. This makes them useful for vacation feeding or for keepers who prefer to feed less frequently.

Protein-rich supplements like freeze-dried daphnia, cyclops, or bloodworms should be offered sparingly — once or twice a week at most. Breeding females benefit from occasional protein boosts, but overuse in a small tank leads to water quality problems. Crushing freeze-dried foods into smaller particles before adding them ensures even the smallest juveniles can access the nutrition.

Mineral Supplements

Calcium supplementation is non-negotiable for Cherry Shrimp colonies. Every successful molt depends on the shrimp's ability to absorb calcium from both food and water to rebuild its exoskeleton. Mineral supplements come in several forms: powdered additives mixed into food, mineral stones placed directly in the tank, and liquid supplements dosed into the water column.

Montmorillonite clay — also called mineral powder — is one of the most versatile supplements available. It can be dusted onto prepared food, mixed into homemade gel foods, or added directly to the water. It provides calcium, magnesium, potassium, and a range of trace minerals. Shrimp will actively graze on surfaces dusted with mineral powder, and many keepers report improved coloration and molting success after adding it to their routine.

Cuttlebone, commonly sold for birds, is a slow-release calcium source that works well in shrimp tanks. A small piece placed in the tank will gradually dissolve, buffering water hardness and providing a surface for shrimp to rasp on. It is inexpensive and widely available, making it a practical choice for keepers on a budget. Replace it when it becomes soft and crumbly.

Liquid mineral supplements designed for invertebrates offer precise dosing and immediate availability in the water column. They are particularly useful in soft-water setups where the base mineral content is low. Follow dosing instructions carefully — excess minerals can shift water chemistry rapidly, and sudden parameter swings are more dangerous to shrimp than gradually low levels.

Foods to Avoid

Copper is the most critical ingredient to screen for in any product entering a shrimp tank. Many fish foods, medications, and even some plant fertilizers contain copper sulfate or chelated copper compounds. While trace amounts of copper are a necessary micronutrient, elevated levels are lethal to invertebrates. Always check ingredient lists and avoid any product that lists copper prominently or does not disclose its copper content.

Generic tropical fish flakes are a poor choice for Cherry Shrimp despite their wide availability. They are typically high in protein, often contain copper-based preservatives, and dissolve rapidly into fine particles that cloud water and clog sponge filters. The nutritional profile is designed for fish metabolism, not crustacean physiology, and regular use can lead to water quality issues in the small tanks shrimp typically inhabit.

Citrus fruits, onion, garlic, and heavily seasoned vegetables should never be introduced to a shrimp tank. These contain compounds that are irritating or toxic to invertebrates. Even small amounts of citrus can alter pH sharply in a low-volume tank. Stick to mild, leafy vegetables and root vegetables when offering fresh food.

Avoid any food product marketed with vague health claims but no transparent ingredient list. The shrimp-keeping hobby has grown rapidly, and the market includes products of widely varying quality. If a manufacturer cannot or will not disclose what is in their product, it is not worth the risk to a colony that may have taken months to establish.

Feeding Schedule

A practical feeding schedule for Cherry Shrimp balances supplemental feeding with the natural grazing that occurs constantly in a mature tank. For a colony in a well-cycled aquarium with visible biofilm growth, feeding prepared or supplemental food every other day is sufficient. On off days, the shrimp graze on biofilm, algae, and any remaining leaf litter — this is normal and healthy behavior, not a sign of underfeeding.

New tanks with minimal biofilm require more frequent supplemental feeding — daily or near-daily — until the tank matures. However, portions should remain small. A pinch of granules or a single thin wafer for a colony of 20 to 30 shrimp is a reasonable starting point. Observe how quickly food disappears and adjust accordingly. If food is gone within an hour, you can increase slightly; if it lingers beyond three hours, cut back.

Many keepers follow a weekly rotation: prepared staple on Monday and Wednesday, blanched vegetable on Friday, protein supplement on Sunday, and natural grazing on the remaining days. This pattern ensures dietary variety without overloading the tank's biological filtration. Adjust the rotation based on colony size — larger colonies of 100 or more may need daily feeding with slightly larger portions.

During periods of heavy breeding or after a large molt cycle, shrimp benefit from slightly increased feeding frequency and a focus on calcium-rich foods. Berried females in particular consume more than usual. Watch for signs of overfeeding — cloudy water, snail population explosions, or a visible film on the water surface — and scale back immediately if they appear. Consistency and restraint are the hallmarks of good shrimp husbandry.
