Keepers who want a larger school of 20 or more should consider a 40-gallon breeder or a similarly proportioned tank that prioritizes length and width over height. Tanks shorter than 24 inches often restrict movement patterns and can lead to stress-related behaviors.

Nano tanks in the 5- to 10-gallon range are sometimes marketed as suitable for small tetras, but these volumes create challenges for maintaining stable water chemistry. Cardinal Tetras are sensitive to parameter swings, and smaller water volumes amplify any fluctuation in temperature, pH, or dissolved waste. The larger the water volume, the more forgiving the system becomes, which is particularly important for a species that demands soft, acidic, and consistently clean conditions.

When choosing a tank, also consider the weight of the filled setup. A 20-gallon aquarium weighs approximately 225 pounds when filled, and a 40-gallon setup approaches 450 pounds. The chosen stand or furniture must be rated for this load, and placement on an interior wall away from windows and heating vents helps prevent temperature instability.

Filtration & Water Flow

Filtration is the backbone of any Cardinal Tetra setup, but flow rate matters as much as filter capacity. In the wild, these fish inhabit slow-moving blackwater streams where current is gentle and consistent. High-output canister filters and powerheads that create strong directional flow can exhaust small tetras and push them into corners of the tank where they huddle rather than school naturally.

Hang-on-back filters are a popular choice for 20-gallon Cardinal Tetra tanks because they provide adequate mechanical and biological filtration without generating excessive current. Models with adjustable flow valves allow keepers to dial back output to a gentle turnover rate of roughly four to six times the tank volume per hour. Sponge pre-filters placed over the intake protect tiny fins and prevent fry from being pulled into the mechanism.

Sponge filters are another excellent option, particularly for breeding setups or blackwater biotope tanks. Aquascaping for Cardinal Tetras should prioritize open swimming lanes flanked by dense plantings and driftwood. These fish feel most secure when they have retreats available but also need unobstructed mid-water corridors to school freely. A layout that positions hardscape and tall plants along the back and sides while leaving the center and front open creates a natural-looking display that also meets behavioral needs.

Driftwood is a particularly valuable hardscape element for Cardinal Tetra tanks. As it leaches tannins into the water, it naturally lowers pH and tints the water an amber hue that replicates the blackwater conditions of their native habitat. Malaysian driftwood, mopani wood, and spider wood are all popular choices. Boiling or soaking wood before adding it to the tank reduces the initial tannin release and prevents excessive water darkening in the first few weeks.

Live plants serve multiple functions in a Cardinal Tetra enclosure. Dense stands of fine-leaved species such as Java moss, Java fern, and various stem plants provide shelter, reduce stress, and absorb nitrates. Floating plants like Amazon frogbit or red root floaters dim overhead lighting, which mimics the canopy-shaded waters these fish originate from and visibly reduces skittish behavior. A well-planted tank also supports the micro-fauna that Cardinal Tetras graze on between feedings.

Lighting Requirements

Cardinal Tetras originate from deeply shaded forest waterways where sunlight is filtered through thick canopy cover and further dimmed by tannin-stained water. Replicating this subdued lighting environment in a home aquarium is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. Intense overhead lighting causes Cardinals to wash out their colors and retreat to sheltered areas rather than schooling openly.

LED lighting systems with adjustable intensity and color temperature offer the most flexibility for Cardinal Tetra setups. A color temperature in the range of 5000 to 6500 Kelvin provides a warm, natural appearance that complements the amber tones of blackwater and brings out the iridescent blue band without the harsh, clinical look of higher-Kelvin fixtures. Dimming capability allows keepers to find the sweet spot that supports plant growth while maintaining the subdued atmosphere these fish prefer.

Floating plants are a natural complement to any lighting strategy. A moderate covering of floaters across 40 to 60 percent of the surface creates dappled shadows beneath, which Cardinals actively seek out. This approach allows higher-intensity lights to be used for plant growth in the lower half of the tank while still shading the upper water column where the school spends most of its time.

A consistent photoperiod of 8 to 10 hours of light per day, controlled by a timer, supports both plant health and fish behavior. Cardinal Tetras are diurnal and benefit from a predictable day-night cycle. Abrupt changes in lighting, such as a room light flipping on in a dark room, can trigger panic responses in schooling fish, so a sunrise and sunset ramp feature on the lighting fixture is worth prioritizing.

Water Parameters & Conditioning

Cardinal Tetras are among the more demanding freshwater species when it comes to water chemistry. They thrive in soft, acidic water with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5, a general hardness below 4 dGH, and a carbonate hardness near zero. While commercially bred Cardinals are somewhat more tolerant than wild-caught specimens, maintaining parameters within this range produces the best coloration, immune health, and breeding potential.

Achieving and maintaining these parameters in most municipal water supplies requires some form of water treatment. Reverse-osmosis or deionized water serves as the base, remineralized with a product designed for soft-water tropical fish to add back trace minerals without raising hardness significantly. Mixing RO water with a small percentage of treated tap water is another approach, though the ratio must be calibrated based on the tap water's mineral content.

Indian almond leaves, alder cones, and peat filtration media are commonly used to naturally lower pH and introduce humic substances that condition the water. These botanicals release tannins that tint the water amber and have mild antibacterial and antifungal properties. Replacing botanicals on a rotating schedule prevents sudden shifts in water chemistry while maintaining a steady supply of beneficial compounds.

Temperature stability is equally critical. Cardinal Tetras prefer a range of 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with minimal fluctuation over the course of a day. A reliable aquarium heater with a thermostat accurate to within one degree, combined with a separate thermometer for verification, is essential equipment. In rooms with significant temperature swings between day and night, a heater slightly oversized for the tank volume provides a buffer against rapid cooling.

Community Tank Compatibility

Cardinal Tetras are peaceful, non-territorial fish that coexist well with other small, calm species. Ideal tank mates include other soft-water tetras like Rummy Nose and Ember Tetras, small rasboras such as Harlequin or Chili Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, otocinclus, and small peaceful dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma species. The common thread among suitable companions is a preference for soft, acidic water and a temperament that does not involve fin-nipping or predatory behavior.

Avoiding tank mates that are large enough to view Cardinal Tetras as prey is essential. Any fish with a mouth large enough to swallow a one-inch tetra is a potential threat, even if the species is generally described as peaceful. Angelfish, for example, are often kept with tetras but will readily consume Cardinals once they reach adult size. Similarly, larger gouramis and aggressive barb species can stress or injure small tetras through persistent chasing.

Shrimp and snails can make excellent companions in a Cardinal Tetra community tank. Amano shrimp, Nerite snails, and Malaysian trumpet snails all tolerate soft, acidic conditions and contribute to tank maintenance by consuming algae and detritus. Smaller ornamental shrimp like Neocaridina varieties are generally safe with Cardinal Tetras, though very young shrimplets may occasionally be eaten.

When stocking a community tank, consider the total bioload carefully. Cardinal Tetras produce modest waste individually, but a school of 15 to 20 combined with a cleanup crew and other species can quickly approach the limits of filtration in a 20-gallon tank. Gradual stocking over several weeks, with water testing after each addition, allows the biological filter to adapt and prevents the ammonia spikes that are especially dangerous in the low-pH environments these fish require.
