These tropical fish require a stable temperature range of 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and even brief dips below 72 degrees can suppress their immune system and trigger outbreaks of ich or other opportunistic diseases. The heater is arguably the single most critical piece of equipment in a Cardinal Tetra setup after the filter itself.
Submersible heaters with built-in thermostats are the standard choice for most aquariums. For a 20-gallon tank, a heater rated at 50 to 100 watts provides sufficient output without the risk of overheating during a thermostat malfunction. Choosing a heater slightly undersized for the tank volume is a deliberate safety strategy that some experienced keepers employ, as it limits the maximum temperature the unit can push the water to if the thermostat fails in the "on" position.
Inline heaters that connect to canister filter tubing offer a cleaner aesthetic by keeping the heating element outside the display tank entirely. These units heat water as it passes through the return line, distributing warmth evenly throughout the tank without a visible glass tube. They are particularly useful in carefully aquascaped tanks where visible equipment detracts from the natural appearance.
Regardless of heater type, a separate standalone thermometer is essential for cross-checking the heater's accuracy. Digital thermometers with external probes provide the most precise readings and can be positioned at the opposite end of the tank from the heater to verify that temperature is consistent throughout the aquarium. Adhesive strip thermometers are convenient but less accurate, and they measure glass temperature rather than water temperature, which can differ by a degree or more.
