White Doves are granivorous birds whose wild ancestors relied primarily on a diet of seeds, grains, and small quantities of plant material foraged from the ground. In captivity, this dietary foundation remains the same, but the controlled environment introduces both opportunities and risks that wild birds never face. Protein requirements for White Doves are moderate compared to hookbill species. Adults in a maintenance state need roughly twelve to fifteen percent protein in their overall diet, with higher levels appropriate during breeding, molting, or recovery from illness. Excessive protein can strain the kidneys over time, so diets formulated for parrots or other high-protein species are inappropriate for doves. The amino acid profile matters as much as the total percentage, and a varied seed mix naturally provides a broader amino acid spectrum than any single grain source.
Fat is an important energy source, but White Doves are sedentary compared to many other bird species and gain weight easily in captivity. A diet overly reliant on oil-rich seeds like sunflower or safflower will push fat intake well beyond what a dove can burn through normal activity. Fatty liver disease is one of the most common metabolic disorders in captive doves, and it develops insidiously over months or years before clinical signs appear. Keeping fat content in the range of four to six percent of total dietary intake is a reasonable target for most adult doves.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is critical for skeletal health, eggshell formation in breeding hens, and proper muscle and nerve function. Seeds are naturally low in calcium and disproportionately high in phosphorus, which means a seed-only diet will always produce a calcium deficit unless supplemented. The ideal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the overall diet is approximately two to one, and achieving this ratio requires deliberate supplementation through mineral grit, cuttlebone, or calcium-fortified foods.
