Space Requirements

Mynah birds are active, athletic flyers that need significantly more space than their medium body size might suggest. A single mynah requires a cage with minimum interior dimensions of 36 inches long, 24 inches deep, and 36 inches tall, though larger is always better. Unlike parrots that climb and hang, mynahs move primarily by hopping between perches and making short flights, so horizontal length matters more than vertical height.

Flight cages or small aviaries are the ideal housing solution for mynahs. These enclosures provide enough room for the bird to fly short distances between perches, which is essential for maintaining muscle tone, cardiovascular health, and psychological well-being. A mynah confined to a cage that only allows hopping will become lethargic, overweight, and prone to behavioral problems including feather destruction and excessive screaming.

Bar spacing is a critical safety consideration. Mynah birds do best with bar spacing between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch. Wider spacing risks head entrapment, while narrower spacing designed for small finches can trap toes. Horizontal bar orientation on at least two sides of the cage gives the bird additional climbing surfaces, though mynahs use these less frequently than hookbill species.

Placement within the home matters as much as cage dimensions. Mynahs are social birds that want to be near household activity, but they also need a quiet side or corner of the cage where they can retreat. Position the enclosure at chest height in a well-lit room away from kitchens, where cooking fumes pose respiratory hazards, and away from windows that receive direct afternoon sun, which can cause overheating.

Cage Types & Construction

Powder-coated steel and stainless steel are the two best cage materials for mynah birds. Powder-coated cages are more affordable and widely available, while stainless steel offers superior durability and resistance to the acidic droppings that mynahs produce. Avoid brass, zinc-coated, or galvanized wire cages entirely, as these metals can cause heavy metal poisoning when birds chew or lick the bars.

Flight cages with a rectangular footprint provide the most usable space. Round cages are discouraged for any bird species because they eliminate corner retreats and create spatial disorientation. Dome-topped cages are acceptable if the interior dimensions still meet minimum requirements, but flat-topped designs are preferable because they allow for play-top areas and make interior arrangement more straightforward.

Door design deserves attention. Mynahs are intelligent birds capable of learning to open simple latch mechanisms, so look for cages with secure locking doors or add bird-safe locks to existing latches. A large main door makes it easier to reach all areas of the cage for cleaning and rearranging, and a separate feeding door allows you to swap food dishes without opening the primary entrance.

The cage bottom should feature a removable tray and a grate that keeps the bird separated from its droppings. Mynahs produce loose, fruit-heavy droppings that accumulate quickly, and a pull-out tray simplifies the daily cleaning that this species absolutely requires. Some keepers line trays with newspaper, paper towels, or cage liner sheets, all of which are safe and easy to replace.

Perches & Interior Layout

Perch selection and placement directly affect a mynah bird's foot health and overall comfort. Natural wood perches of varying diameters are the best choice, as they exercise different foot muscles and prevent the pressure sores that develop from standing on uniform dowels. Branches from bird-safe trees such as manzanita, java wood, or untreated fruit woods provide excellent texture variation and are sturdy enough to support a mynah's weight.

Avoid sandpaper-covered perches, which were once marketed as nail-trimming aids but actually cause abrasions and infections on the foot pads. Concrete or mineral perches can be used sparingly in low-traffic areas of the cage to help maintain nail length, but they should never serve as primary resting perches. Rope perches are acceptable if inspected regularly for fraying that could entangle toes.

Position perches at different heights to encourage movement, but avoid placing any perch directly above a food or water dish where droppings will contaminate the bird's meals. Leave the longest unobstructed flight path available by keeping the center of the cage relatively open and clustering perches toward the ends. A mynah needs room to hop and make short flights between stations.

Include at least one high sleeping perch positioned in a quieter corner of the cage. Mynahs prefer to roost at the highest available point, and a dedicated sleeping perch gives them a consistent, secure spot to settle for the night. This perch should be stable and wide enough for the bird to grip comfortably without swaying.

Aviary & Outdoor Enclosures

Keepers with available space may consider an outdoor aviary or a dedicated bird room as a superior alternative to a standard cage. Outdoor aviaries allow mynahs to experience natural sunlight, fresh air, and a more stimulating environment, all of which contribute to better physical and mental health. An aviary measuring at least six feet long, three feet wide, and six feet tall provides comfortable flight space for a single mynah or a pair.

Outdoor aviaries must be fully enclosed with appropriately sized mesh to prevent escape and protect against predators. Hardware cloth with half-inch openings is a reliable choice that keeps out rodents, snakes, and cats while remaining durable in weather. The enclosure should include a sheltered section with a solid roof where the bird can escape rain, wind, and direct sun. Mynahs are tropical birds but can become stressed by prolonged exposure to cold, damp conditions.

A double-door entry system is essential for outdoor aviaries. This vestibule design creates an airlock that prevents the bird from escaping when you enter or exit the enclosure. Each door should be self-closing and lockable. The floor of the aviary can be natural earth, concrete, or pavers, depending on your preference for drainage and cleaning ease.

Indoor bird rooms offer another spacious housing option and eliminate weather concerns entirely. A spare bedroom or converted space with sealed windows, bird-safe surfaces, and adequate ventilation can serve as a free-flight area during supervised hours. Remove or secure any hazards including ceiling fans, open water sources, electrical cords, and toxic houseplants before allowing free-flight time in any indoor space.

Climate Considerations

Mynah birds originate from tropical and subtropical regions of South and Southeast Asia and are most comfortable in temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. They tolerate moderate warmth well but are sensitive to cold drafts, rapid temperature swings, and sustained humidity below 40 percent. Indoor housing should maintain stable temperatures and avoid placement near exterior doors, drafty windows, or heating and cooling vents.

Humidity management is particularly important for mynah health. Dry indoor air, especially during winter months in heated homes, can cause respiratory irritation, dry skin, and feather quality decline. A room humidifier set to maintain 50 to 60 percent relative humidity benefits both the bird and its keeper. Alternatively, regular misting with lukewarm water or providing a shallow bathing dish helps the bird maintain feather condition in dry environments.

Mynahs should never be housed in kitchens or rooms adjacent to kitchens where cooking occurs. Fumes from overheated nonstick cookware release polytetrafluoroethylene gas, which is rapidly fatal to birds even at concentrations imperceptible to humans. Smoke, aerosol sprays, scented candles, and strong cleaning chemicals also pose serious respiratory risks and should be eliminated from any room where a mynah lives.

For keepers in warm climates who house mynahs outdoors, shade and air circulation are essential during hot months. Temperatures above 90 degrees can cause heat stress, and an outdoor aviary must provide ample shaded areas and access to fresh water for both drinking and bathing. Misting systems designed for aviaries can help cool the environment during peak heat.

Multi-Bird Households

Mynah birds are generally social and can coexist with a companion mynah if introduced properly and given adequate space. A pair of mynahs requires a substantially larger enclosure than a single bird, with flight cage or aviary dimensions that allow each bird to establish its own preferred perching and feeding areas. Crowding two mynahs into a cage sized for one will generate territorial aggression regardless of how well the birds previously got along.

Introductions should be gradual. House new birds in separate cages within visual and auditory range of each other for at least two weeks before attempting shared housing. This quarantine period also serves a health function, allowing time to confirm the new bird is not carrying transmissible diseases. Once both birds are calm in each other's presence, supervised time in a neutral shared space can begin.

Housing mynahs with other bird species requires careful consideration. Mynahs are assertive, vocal birds that can intimidate smaller or more timid species. They should not be housed with finches, canaries, or small parakeets, which may be stressed or injured by the mynah's energetic behavior. Larger softbill species or comparably sized birds with similar temperaments are more compatible, though individual personality always plays a role.

Provide duplicate resources in any multi-bird enclosure. Each bird should have access to its own food station, water dish, and preferred sleeping perch to reduce competition and territorial disputes. Even bonded pairs benefit from having options, as dominance dynamics can shift over time and access to independent resources prevents one bird from being excluded from essentials.
