Weighing roughly 250 to 390 grams, they possess a fast metabolism driven by near-constant physical activity and an intense curiosity that keeps them moving throughout the day. A diet that falls short in variety or nutritional density will quickly manifest in dull feathering, lethargy, feather-destructive behavior, or chronic health issues. Getting the nutritional foundation right is the single most important thing an owner can do to support a long and healthy life.
Protein requirements for Goffin's Cockatoos are moderate compared to larger parrot species but should not be overlooked. In the wild, these birds supplement their seed and fruit intake with insects and larvae, which provide essential amino acids that plant-based diets alone may not fully deliver. Captive diets built around high-quality pellets generally meet baseline protein needs, but offering cooked legumes, sprouted seeds, and occasional cooked egg can help round out the amino acid profile, particularly during molting periods when feather production places additional demands on the body.
Fat is a nutrient that requires careful calibration for this species. Goffin's Cockatoos are naturally lean birds adapted to a diet lower in fat than what many seed-heavy commercial mixes provide. Excessive dietary fat contributes to obesity, fatty liver disease, and atherosclerosis, all of which are documented problems in captive cockatoos. A diet where pellets and fresh vegetables form the core, with nuts and seeds offered sparingly as enrichment or training rewards, keeps fat intake within a healthy range without depriving the bird of essential fatty acids.
Calcium and vitamin D3 metabolism deserves particular attention. Like all cockatoos, Goffin's require adequate calcium for bone density, egg production in hens, and proper nerve and muscle function. Vitamin D3, which facilitates calcium absorption, is synthesized through exposure to unfiltered sunlight or full-spectrum UVB lighting. Birds kept entirely indoors without appropriate lighting may struggle to maintain healthy calcium levels even when dietary calcium intake appears sufficient, creating a nutritional gap that food products alone cannot fully address.
