This anatomy makes them particularly vulnerable to respiratory fungal infections, as inhaled spores can establish infection not only in the lungs but throughout the extensive air sac system. From respiratory tissue, the infection may spread to other organs including liver, kidneys, and central nervous system in severe or chronic cases.
Antifungal treatment for waterfowl aspergillosis requires commitment to prolonged therapy, as fungal infections respond much more slowly than bacterial infections to treatment. Unlike antibiotics that may show improvement within days, antifungal therapy typically requires weeks to months of consistent medication administration before significant improvement occurs. The azole class of antifungal medications, including itraconazole, voriconazole, and related drugs, forms the foundation of treatment. These medications may be supplemented with amphotericin B in severe cases, and nebulized antifungal therapy delivers medication directly to affected respiratory tissues.
Veterinary involvement is essential for aspergillosis treatment in waterfowl, as accurate diagnosis, appropriate drug selection, proper dosing, and ongoing monitoring all require professional expertise. Presumptive treatment based on symptoms alone may delay appropriate therapy while other conditions are actually responsible. Definitive diagnosis through imaging, endoscopy, culture, or other testing enables targeted treatment planning. The veterinarian monitors for treatment response and potential drug toxicity throughout the extended treatment course. Without professional guidance, aspergillosis carries a very poor prognosis, but with appropriate treatment, many waterfowl can survive and recover from this serious infection.
