Obstruction of urinary outflow, though less common in birds than mammals, can cause back-pressure damage to kidneys. The impact of acute kidney injury on affected birds is severe and potentially fatal, with birds often becoming critically ill within a short timeframe. As kidney function declines, toxic waste products including uric acid accumulate in the blood, causing systemic effects throughout the body. Electrolyte imbalances affect cardiac and neurological function. Fluid balance becomes disrupted, potentially leading to either dehydration or fluid overload depending on the stage and nature of injury. Birds with acute kidney injury typically show obvious signs of severe illness including profound lethargy, loss of appetite, and changes in droppings. The rapid onset means that birds may go from apparently normal to critically ill within just days, sometimes hours.
With aggressive treatment initiated promptly, many cases of acute kidney injury are potentially reversible, particularly if the underlying cause can be identified and addressed before permanent kidney damage occurs. Treatment focuses on supporting kidney function through fluid therapy, correcting electrolyte imbalances, managing complications, and eliminating or treating the underlying cause. The kidneys have some capacity for regeneration, and function may return to normal or near-normal if damage is not too extensive. However, delayed treatment or severe injury may result in permanent kidney damage, progression to chronic kidney disease, or death.
