Granulomas around the mouth or throat can interfere with eating and breathing. Large or strategically located granulomas may compress adjacent structures, causing pain or dysfunction. Surgical excision is often the primary treatment for accessible granulomas, though complete removal can be challenging due to the infiltrative nature of some lesions. Medical management including appropriate antimicrobial therapy is essential when infectious causes are identified. Behavioral intervention becomes crucial when granulomas result from self-trauma related to feather picking or self-mutilation. Early detection and treatment by an avian veterinarian significantly improves outcomes, as smaller granulomas are easier to manage and underlying causes are easier to address before they become chronic.
