In the wild, few Skaapstekers reach this advanced age due to predation, seasonal resource scarcity, and environmental hazards, which means that the geriatric phase is largely a phenomenon of captive longevity. Captive specimens maintained under optimal conditions may live ten to twelve years, with anecdotal reports of individuals exceeding thirteen years in exceptional cases.
The transition from prime adulthood to the senior stage is gradual rather than abrupt. The earliest indicators are typically a progressive decline in activity levels and a reduced feeding response. Where a prime adult might actively patrol its enclosure during the early morning and late afternoon crepuscular periods, a senior animal will spend increasing amounts of time in its preferred hide, emerging less frequently and for shorter durations. This behavioral shift reflects the natural slowing of metabolic processes and should not be mistaken for illness, though any sudden or dramatic change in activity warrants veterinary evaluation.
Physical signs of aging become apparent as the animal progresses further into the senior stage. Muscle tone along the dorsal surface gradually diminishes, and the body takes on a slightly less taut appearance compared to a prime adult. The dorsal coloration may fade somewhat, with the dark rhombic blotches becoming less sharply defined and the lateral striping losing some of its contrast. Skin elasticity decreases, and shed intervals tend to lengthen as the metabolic rate slows, with senior animals sometimes going eight to twelve weeks between sheds compared to the four-to-six-week cycle of a healthy adult.
Reproductive capacity declines and eventually ceases during the senior stage. Females will produce fewer and smaller clutches before ceasing egg production entirely, while males show diminished courtship intensity and sperm production. Retiring senior animals from breeding programs well before reproductive failure occurs is strongly advisable, as the physiological demands of reproduction place significant stress on aging organ systems and can accelerate the decline in overall condition. Most breeders cease breeding females by age seven and males by age eight to prioritize the animals' long-term health.
